Is Joe Flacco Ready To Win A Super Bowl?

24 posts in this topic

Good article; nothing we don't already know but it's good to see here positive and negative sentiments being expressed by a man who has known Joe for a long time.

I'm inclined to agree with the article's statement that, with the new weapons acquired in the offseason, there is more pressure on Flacco -- perhaps even more pressure than is already assigned to a young QB entering that crucial third season of development.

If I were to try to answer the question, I'm inclined to say he's not ready to win a Super Bowl yet...but that doesn't mean he can't help the team win one this season. I'm not sure that Flacco can be the Drew Brees or Peyton Manning type that can carry an offense just yet -- but he'll get there eventually. It might be too much to ask of him to take that giant leap into elite territory in only his third season, but that does not mean he cannot be a good (or even great) QB in 2010.

Thanks for the link. It's pretty generic as an article, but that's to be expected in the off-season, I suppose. It's nice to start the speculation early... :)

I read this about an hour before this topic was actually posted, and like Ed_Reed20 stated, it's nothing that we really don't know. I think a good amount of fans don't take into consideration how badly Joe was injured late in the season. His mechanics greatly suffered, and he never stood tall or chopped his feet enough then stepped in to deliver a missle.

In my opinion, yes, Flacco is more than Super Bowl ready. Joe has already been "super" for a Ravens team that had to deal with less than stellar QB play for years. He might even be "elite" now that he has all of his toys. You can't underestimate Anquan Boldin, Donte' Stallworth, two rookie TE's and Ray Rice. This Williamson critic seems to hit our team with nothing but negatives, but says he might pick us for the Super Bowl? I'll let James Walker do the talking from on.

Next time, please post your thoughts on an article when you start a thread instead of just giving us a link.

Flacco has one glaring statistical weakness, but I won't bore anyone with that. I'll just give a pat answer. Flacco needs to take the proverbial "next step." If he does, then he might be Superbowl worthy, if he doesn't then he won't.

Thanks for the link. Love to read what other people say about us, good, bad or indifferent.

On another note, you may get a warning on it. I did the same thing when I first started and it was explained to me that the guidelines state you must give a brief summary of the article and your opinion, not just the link. Now I'm all for constructive criticism, but when I asked why I was branded with a warning, I was told in not so many words, you do the crime you do the time.

Although eventually the warning was removed, as you can see I still carry the warning meter on all my posts and I'm the only one I ever see on this forum with it. Maybe now I might have some company, lol.

Something needs to change during the playoffs (which isn't a given either) we can't afford for Flacco to play that badly again.

That is correct. Orphan links are strongly discouraged. Always provide a summary and your "take".

You only see your own warning meter and yours is clear.

I don't know if he is ready to lead us to the Superbowl, but like Franchise said, I think he can do enough to get us there and with the team we have, I think we can win it all.

I see our defense and running game still the focal point of a run to the Superbowl, its just now we should be able get enough plays in the passing game to get us over the hump. Our defense is deeper and improved at rushing the passer too.

Is Flacco going to be on the same level as Brees or Peyton this year? Probably not. We must not forget exactly just how good those guys are though because not many quarterbacks will EVER be as good as they are. Does that mean that Flacco can't be great? Absolutely not.

I agree and disagree. We saw spots of him doing that last year against the Pats and Vikes. We watched him lead the team down the field at the end of both those games. However, in the playoffs against the Colts, he was not able to carry the offense and complete the comeback, same with the Packers MNF game. Can he consistently carry the offense and even the team on his shoulders? Not yet, but as you said-he'll get there, and he'll probably get there soon.

I see 30+ TDs and 4000 yards...yeah that's enough to win a Super Bowl. His offense numbers this season are going to be incredible. He threw for 3600 and 21TDs last season with one legitimate receiver and an injury for the second half of the season. It won't be that difficult for him to amass at least 400 more yards and 9 TDs. With these weapons, he is ready.

I was working at this theme park the other day. In Snoopy land I saw this big sign that Said "JOE Cool" immediately reminded me of our faithful Quarterback.

His numbers were great last year with very few weapons at his disposal -- hence why there's added pressure on him this season since he has almost no excuse (outside of injury) to struggle.

He's shown that he has great poise in many high-pressure situations, however. It definitely isn't hard to believe that Flacco could thrive with such added pressure in 2010 and do amazing (and I mean amazing) things.

I think a Superbowl victory hinges on a significant leap in Flacco's play. As we know it's a pass happy NFL these days and our inability to move the ball in the air is where we lost the play-off game against the Colts.

Our defense was on the field for too long last season and any defense will start to buckle eventually. To quote the late great Merlin Olsen 'It takes a lot more energy to react than to act'.

We have to dominate the air now on both sides of the ball.

He may get 4000 yards, but I don't see 30+ touchdowns. I still think we'll pound the rock on the ground - in saying that, I have no problem with 30+ touchdowns being thrown!!!

i believe that flacco can win a championship in his third year. he is ready.last year in the playoffs,we had no one that could stretch the field.now we have donte stallworth. we had no great route runner besides derrick mason. now we have anquan boldin.when you add guys like ed dickson and dennis pitta. those are guys that can give todd heap alot of rest.i also think that david reed will contribute alot this season.

It will be interesting to see how Flacco deals with having many targets who can get open. Obviously, it bodes well for our team and Superbowl aspirations.

I like the way this offense is actually looking. I'm glad we have Boldin to make those tough grabs over the middle; matriculate the football and let him pile up the YAC!

Stallworth as a 3rd option also pleases me. I'm glad our number one receiver isn't a huge deep threat; as our main receivers will make plays on shorter routes - allowing us to control the clock for huge chunks in combination with our balanced running game.

But I digress. Stallworth against a nickelback is a fine matchup; this man was lined up opposite Randy Moss in New England - and showed he can make plays deep. I think the fact he has something to prove will bode very well for us, I'd expect 5 touchdowns from Donte.

Ray Rice will also catch a break (excuse the pun) also, as he won't be required to catch so many dump down passes and make things happen. Whilst this is a weapon of ours, it is more potent with a fresh Rice and the downfield blocking of Boldin; so I see it as a chance as more of a home run play.

Bringing this all back to Flacco, these things work in his favour. We have speed, size, strength and excellent hands across multiple receivers.

I'm glad we have Mason back to work those sidelines. We have Boldin anywhere across the middle right to the sidelines, and Stallworth deep, so all aspects are covered.

GO RAVENS!!! :baltimore-ravens:
