Because of a logjam at the wide receiver position, David Reed hadn’t had a chance to show he can be a capable pass-catcher.

But with the veterans away, the Utah product stood out during rookie camp on Wednesday and Thursday.

“I thought he caught everything [on Wednesday] that I noticed,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said.  ”He made some radius catches, you know, low catches, high catches, behind-the-back-type stuff.”

Reed lined up in several receiver positions, and as he got comfortable, he reached high for a few overthrown balls, bent low for shoestring catches and easily handled the simple ones.

This was an improvement from what was an atypical day for the receiver at the beginning of camp.

“I had a few drops on Tuesday, and the coaches said, ‘I’ve never seen you drop that many passes in my life,’” noted the fifth-round draft pick.  ”I remembered that the rest of the week.  I told myself I wasn’t going to make those same mistakes.”

Where Reed still needs to improve, according to Harbaugh, is his knowledge of the offense and route running.  Reed said he was asked to run precise routes for the Utes, but the attention to detail at the professional level is “amazing.”

“The thing that David’s got to do, like any of these young guys, is learn the mental part of it – learn where he’s supposed to be, how he’s supposed to line up, the tempo of the motions, how far he goes in a motion on different routes,” Harbaugh said.

Still, Reed knows he has to build on his performance as one of the featured (and only) receivers on the field.

“It’s a blessing to have the opportunities,” said Reed.  ”I’m able to relax and just be me.  It’s kind of like college out there now.  I’m sure it’s going to heat back up next week. The biggest thing is trying to learn the system for when those vets get back.”

David is going to be a gem trust me. He's fast and sort of knows what he's doing, but cut him some slack he's a fifth-round pick. Just can't wait for the season, all of you who questioned him are going to be buying his jersey.Go Ravens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to see him in the Pre-Season. Coaches and Scouts absolutely loved this guy. I think he's the guy defenses don't plan for or worried about until he burns them. Many draft guys had him as a big time sleeper! Cant' wait to test their theory on the field.

I think this guy makes the team as the fifth receiver. I think we're only gonna carry 5, which leaves: Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason, Donte' Stallworth, Marcus Smith, and David Reed. That's what I think anyway. I think Clayton is done as a Raven. Marcus Smith is a few years younger and has gained a lot of ground on him.

i would hate to see this guy go to waste, i think we need him cause you don't know if we will resign stallworth at the end of the season and who knows when mason will retire. if we put him on the practice squad there is a possibility another time might grab him up.

@birdland, i would hope we keep 6, it would be nice to have 7 but unlikely with the limited number of roster spots available. no one is going to argue with your first three, that is pretty much written stone, but i think clayton definitely has an upper hand over smith and so does demetrius williams. so if we are dropping anyone it is smith.

@t-sizzle, thanks for the video. reed is evidently a talented wr that we are lucky to have, it is rare to see a wr with such speed to burn the defense and break tackles, it seemed like after every catch he broke free from at least two tacklers.

David Reed's stats and play style look similar to Boldin...shorter, more elusive less tackle breaking, but he gets yards after the catch, low TD # but high # of receptions, hope he sticks around and learns from Q

I would like to see the team maximize the usage of all the WR rooks and use the vets as situational players only during preseason games. Forget about this first team, second team way of thinking. Cam should game plan to get each as many throws as possible. It won't help to make a decision on who to keep by putting a guy out there for one quarter and only throwing one ball his way. Actual game experience is what these kids need most and imperative for the team to make the best decision. Win or lose, it doesn't matter.

I've mentioned a cuple of times that Marcus Smith is one of the best ST gunners so I don't really count him as a WR roster spot per se even though a 53 man roster is a 53 man roster. Top three plus clayton and reed seem most likely to be on the team (because they can do something on ST's or at least have volunteered). From the article it seems like Reed has the same problem as Harper, incredible potential and eye popping catches but also a propensity to have bad days/plays. I hope the kid works out, I like his highlight tapes from school.

it sounds to me that we need players like D.Reed on the line to help take some pressure off some shoulders like Ed Reed. As i see it, we have a great team, but better players will lead to an even better team---possibly a superbowl team...
