Cloverfield

I think my girls and I are going to go see The Orphanage instead. Cloverfield looks good, but I'm not sure I will like the way it's filmed.

For the record, I just saw the movie, and it was AMAZING.

See, in order to enjoy it, though, you have to go into the movie with NO expectations and understand three things:

1) It has no real story because it is literally a home movie of a monster attack, shown from ONE perspective. Don't expect a narrative, and don't expect detailed character development. Think of your own home movies -- they have no narratives whatsoever, so why should this be any different? It'd be ridiculous to expect someone to stand in front of the camera and give a backstory on everyone before the action starts, especially since the time frame is supposed to be only a few hours.

2) The camerawork is VERY realistic, and it CAN induce motion sickness if you sit too close. But if you think about it, the shakiness is necessary. After all, when you're running away from something and you're SCARED, do you really think you'll be calm enough to hold a camera straight? Plus, the character holding the camera isn't supposed to be a professional cameraman anyway.

3) The acting, given the situations in which these characters are placed, actually isn't as bad as reviews make it out to be. Frankly, do you really expect Oscar-winning performances from a bunch of "real people" in a "very real situation"? For instance, when coping with the deaths of some of their friends, do you expect the characters to ALL emote the same way? Some are stunned, others cry uncontrollably. Keep that in mind.

In my opinion, the movie is just plain FUN. It's a popcorn flick that served its purpose well: to prevent stunning yet realistic images of New York City under attack by an unknown THING, told from the perspective of a group of friends trying to save one of their own.

The movie is what it is, and if you take it at face value and try not to read into it too much, you'll enjoy it.

From what I've seen, it's one of those movies where you either LOVE IT or HATE IT, and most of the people that I've talked to that hated it, went into the movie WITH expectations and were looking for more than what the movie was supposed to present.

And, of course, the art-house and indie critics trashed it. ;-)

I loved it for pretty much the reasons you listed.

And I liked how the monster design kind of "hurt" to look at. Craziest looking thing I've seen in awhile.

Thought it was awesome that the movie had a sense of humor, too.

This is one of those movies that you HAVE TO see in theaters with surround-sound and the big screen and the works to appreciate.

And it sounds as if you kinda didn't get my whole point about suspending disbelief.

I know it doesn't seem logical that they'd go back towards the monster, but think about it:

(SPOILERS HERE)

The main character just lost his brother, most of his friends, and now he's in danger of losing his best friend who he just realizes that he loves and was meant to be with. Don't you think that if you were in his situation, you wouldn't care about your own life anymore and would do anything to save the one person that meant the most to you? Even just to be with them one last time?

Sounds sappy, I know, but you just have to put yourself in their place to make sense of it.

And then again, this is one of those movies where it doesn't have to make sense. It's all about the atmosphere and just being in the moment.

My gf and I saw a free, pre-release screening of it the night before it came out and its AWESOME!

My favorite scene below:

The best scene in my opinion was the field hospital scene. "OH MY GOD WE HAVE A BITER!!

Aaaah that was awesome!!

Edit: If youre concerned about the shakey camera and are prone to motion sickness, just don't go into the theater with either a full or an empty stomach. The movie isnt long so you should be ok.

I went and saw it with my Dad we filled both catagories, I thought it was a cool idea for a movie was real fun to watch in contrast my father's first words after it was over were, "You had to make me come see this?"

Oh well everyone has different likes and dislikes, but still overall I thought it was a good movie.

Now for the next movie by J.J. Abrams, the new Star Trek movie this Christmas!! WOOT!

Nah, it was bettter than blair witch. Blair witch had three people running around, freaking out themselves. Cloverfield has a freakin' monster!

It was decent in the theaters, once is enough to watch. One point it did make me dizzy.

How come everybody in that movie was so hot! Where are the normies?!

I'm sorry, but if that happens and i know that my friends are dead, i'm dipping out...i don't care if ther's a briefcase with a million dollars back at the apt with my wife there. May sound messed up, but THIS IS MY LIFE I'M NOT DYING FOR SOMEONE TO DIE IN MY ARMS. You catch my drift? LMAO nah uh,,,ain't happeni'n...u can bash me all u want hahaha....

Since Cloverfield was the government's designation for the incident and not the monster, the monster still needs a name.

My friends and I think he looks like a Larry, but we're open to suggestions.

I already have a name for it.

But, I can't type it on here 'cause it's kinda inappropriate.

Well, seeing as how I always went "what the heck" in amazement every time I saw it, and considering how freaking HUGE it is, I think you kinda get the gist of where I'm going with it. ;)

I saw this movie last night. The ending was kinda wierd to me...I was hoping that we saw them actually kill the monster. Other than that I thought the movie was a 1 1/2 thumbs up.

I liked the ending because it keeps in the vein of how it doesn't reveal more than what you see from the camera.

Plus, I thought it was a nice touch to cut back to the footage of Rob & Beth at Coney Island, and how she said, "I had a good day" and smiled warmly at the camera.

Other than my little crush on the actress that plays Beth now (lol), I thought it did a good job of adding irony and showing that the cuts between footage weren't completely unnecessary, and it just helped to suspend the disbelief a little bit more. Plus, for anyone who actually got a slight emotional attachment to some of the characters (like I did), it helped warrant a second viewing. Which I have to get around to eventually while it's still in theaters...

Plus, they've bandied about the idea of a sequel.
