What Makes A Great Fan?

17 posts in this topic

Mulling through the forums on this site, I've seen a lot of different posts from a lot of different fans. It got me to thinking, what makes one fan better than another? Is a great fan one who knows the most stats about the team, and can make the best stat-backed argument so they seem correct? Is it the one who loves their team whole-heartedly and sees every decision the franchise makes on the same level as the holy scripture? Could it be the one who thinks they're the best fan, and use every opportunity to let others know he/she thinks they're the best? Or is it the one who not only loves the franchise, but also the city and the fellow fans?

I've seen a bunch of each on here, and want to know what you think? I won't even reply first this time... lol you know who you are!

first and foremost a great fan, remains a fan if the team is winless at the end of the season.
Yeah a good bit ticked off, but a fan none the less.

A fan who still stands by the team through all of the bad times makes a true fan.

Example: All remaining Orioles fans are true fans.

Exactly! Love my team always. You don't have to paint up and wear a ton of beads, rubber face masks, purple hair but if you want to thats fine, and if you want to wear a purple t-shirt, or a jersey thats fine too. Nothing wrong with screaming your lungs out with 70,000 like minded souls at the Vault or yell at your TV or computer or go to a bar. Of course my family thinks I love the Ravens more then them sometimes.

Sorry, but just can't help myself.....what?

I think you mean:

No one will truely know who the best fan is, but he/she has to live and breathe this stuff every morning in which he/she is awake. The purple and black must be on his/her mind at all times.....etc, etc, etc.

Much better....

The thing that fans can do to help the team the most is buying tickets and merchandise. Steve is willing to operate at a loss now and then, but no owner is going to sink himself. Let the man turn a profit and it lets Ozzie and Eric do their jobs. We saw what Cleveland did to Modell, with the old leaky stadium and huge losses he was taking.

We're lucky to have such a great owner as Bisciotti, a genuine Maryland sports fan who is usually laissez-faire but steps in on occasion when he feels he needs to, like getting Flacco and Harbaugh.

Also, a great pair of lungs helps make a good fan on third down.

Fierce loyalty, irrespective of team performance year-by-year.

The ability to objectively assess a team too; you want fans behind the players, but at the same time, to be able to reasonably critique players and problems with the team.

GO RAVENS!!!

Man, good topic, really got me thinking.

What makes a great fan? First, someone who possesses some knowledge of the game and understands how it's played. Spends time researching their team to know all they can about them (not necessarily meaning just stats). Next, much like the players, you must be dedicated, fairly disciplined and attempt to set an example. Represent your team and wear their colors well and in my case, bleed a little purple at times. Someone who realizes that the players and coaches are only human and that mistakes will be made, so never being too judgmental or overly critical is important. Finally, stand by your team through thick & thin.

These to me are all quality traits that make a fan great!

I completely agree and I feel that this describes me as a fan and about a handful of other Ravens fans that I know.

Loyalty first, then everything else falls into place. If you can't back your team in bad times as much as you would during the good times -- congratulations, you're a Colts fan. :229031_rofl:

I agree that win or lose, loyalty is number 1. Right behind that, though, is knowing the names of more than just the stars on the roster.
