Will Mattison Unleash The Dogs This Season?

19 posts in this topic

This is a topic I would love to hear everyones opinion on! Hope to get some good feedback.

Although he possesses a ton of experience, does he fit our defensive legacy? I would like to think that he went through a lot of growing pains last season, just like players do! I also hope this will be a breakout season for him as a DC. I as many would love to see the "Organized Chaos" re-emerge.

Last season I thought was played way too conservative and a major reason for the decline in pressure and sacks. He said many times we had to get more pressure from our front three but, if that's all you bring teams will adjust. When we did blitz, I felt we advertised it too much and teams picked it up. Opponents QB's had way too much time to throw last season which hurt our DB's performance often.

This season's defensive emphasis has been placed on an increased pass rush and we brought in the players to help accomplish this. But, if the players aren't used correctly and we don't scheme to keep opposing QB's off balance, how effective will they be?

What do you think we will see this season?

This was probably a good question to ask and Im sure you will get plenty of debate.
I feel Mattison did a great job last year with what he was given to work with. You cant expect a new D cordinator to come in and run the exact same system that was run the year before. Since Ravens existance our scheme has recycled every couple of years. The only factor that stayed the same was a pride of being the best.
Mattison brought his own flavor to the table. The problem was execution by the players. Not neccessarily a lack of desire or talent but falmiliarity was the problem early on. Once they were comfortable it showed. I think it will only be better this year.

I agree completely. Once we got through the growing pains of a new system we played hot. If we played that way the whole season, we would have been the #1 D, not the Jets. :P But I hope he lets the dogs out. I don't really wanna see anything like what Rex did, but he should definately blitz a lot more.

I think he did a great job overall and blitzed the right amount of times. Last year was a transition year for both Mattison and the D. Now that Mattison has seen how is better then who from last year and is now looking to see how the rooks are doing. I think he will be running his schemes smoothly this year with less pass interference penalties. The players adjusted to his plays and the rooks only know his plays so we should be running like a stream this year on D. It's gonna be an awesome year. Super Bowl Dreamin'.

Dan - you make some great points that I didn't consider. I would have thought though that with him having a year in the system as Linebacker Coach, that some of what he knew worked well for our players would transfer over in his game planning. But, you are right in saying that we didn't execute well in the beginning and there was improvement throughout the season. Thanks for your input!

I was one of the people that was hating on mattison defense but as was stated towards the end of the season everything started coming together. I know already that if we can fix the penaltys we will be a superbowl contender. Im to excited to watch this up coming season. My problems lie more with cam an hoping that he will open up the playbook an not be so conservative.

Mattison shut the haters up nice and good last year. Now that he has a couple new weapons, and Kruger will be getting significant playing time, expect it to continue this year.
Will he blitz more/less? Who knows? But with Cody and Kindle added to the DL and Kindle behind them, I think we will definitely be blitzing more effeciently.

Agreed. Not to mention everyone has spent an entire year learning and playing in his system. There should be less confusion/hesitation in their player and the defense should improve.

In my opinion, I would like to see Mattison disguise his blitzes a little better. They were fairly easy to predict.

Sack wise, our 2009 defense only got one less sack than our 2008 defense did and I'm sure that Rex blitzed more often than Mattison.

So overall, I feel very optimistic about our defensive additions this offseason and I'm excited to see what our defense as a whole brings to the table. I see an increase in sacks/pressure.

I don't think Mattison will have to send many blitzes next season. With a rededicated Suggs, the other pass rushers the team acquired in the off-season and the pass rusher already on the team, the D should be able to get pressure sending four or five.

I agree with you 100%. Mattison has said time and time again he likes getting the majority of his pressure from the front 4. Having Ngata, Cody, Suggs and whoever is in at the other DE spot, there should be no reason why his phylosophy wont work this year. Sending one of the linebackers or corners from time to time only helps the situation. I dont think there is much need to try and be all sneaky with the blitzes. The oposition will see where it is coming from and wont be able to do a thing about it.

We are probably going to play the same type of Defense, we will just be better at it with a year under our belts.

OMG - I sure hope that somebody lets the dogs out this season! I was a little down on Mattison at the beginning of last season, but things seemed to gel in the latter part of the season.

Yep. More discipline matters more to me seeing as our players are more familiar with the system, not to mention our added depth rushing the passer and stuffing the run.

With the Youngin's on the roster ready to play. Mattison is going to get even more production this year because of the motivation the veterans provide to the nest.
