Offensive Goal Line Situation

24 posts in this topic

We have seen it last season, when our offense used McGahee at RB spot in goal line and short yardage situations. And it worked very effectively. I also think that it benefited both Rice and McGahee by staying fresh and injury free, instead of "riding" just one running back. Which one of these 3 options would you like to use on 3rd down & 2:

1) Rice as RB behind FB McClain

2) McGahee as RB behind FB McClain

3) McClain as RB behind FB Ngata

any other options?

It really doesn't matter to me who gets the goal-line touches, just as long as the o-line wins their battle.

I like having McGahee or McClain do the goal-line work. It keeps Ray Rice out of the game and keeps him fresh. It worked last season, why not keep the same balance?

I hear you. Well, this could be the difference of
1) scoring a TD
or
2) standing there on 4th 3 .............lol

The coaches seemingly distribute goal-line carries randomly. Rice got a few last season and converted, McGahee definitely turned his into TDs and so did McClain with the limited opportunities he got.

Actually McGahee was dominant in the Red zone, and had an excellent year save maybe 5 carries all year. IE, check out that Stiff Arm on da Raidaz

McGahee was great last year, but there was one in Green Bay, where he got stopped in the backfield. Ravens just didn't play well in that game, for some reason.
Well, a lot of teams will be prepared next time around, so we will have to mix it up, IMHO. Or Flacco to Boldin?

I never really thought the team was in the game against GB. Indy's goal-line stop sticks in my mind though.

Q will definitely open things up in the red-zone and I'm hoping Pitta and Dickson can do the same.

I agree that it doesn't matter who gets the carries as long as the OL wins. But I think McClain would probably be the best option.

I really didnt feel like digging up the statistics on our goal line scoring from last year. Just from my memory though I can remember quite a few times being dissapointed that we were unable to come away with the six points. Now I know alot of that was contributed to the passing game as well. I can remember McGahee punching it in quite a few times and falling short as well. Rice and McClain did as well. Out of 20 or so rushing tds, how many were goaline? What I do know is there is always room for improvement. With the new weapons we have and another year of experience under everyones belt, I think we will see a large improvement in goal line situations. I dont think you can make the automatic decision as to who runs, who blocks, or who makes the reception. Diversity is the key to success.

How about all of the above? There are plenty of touchdowns to go around. I think McGahee did an excellent job last year, as did McClain. Rice usually got taken out but he could do it just as well as McGahee, but I'd rather preserve him. Goal line running is more about the O-line than the RB.

Also how about Ngata at halfback and Cody at fullback?

All 3 are capable ball carriers so I don't think it makes that much difference, but splitting the carries helps keep everyone a bit fresher over the season. On a side note, HBs who share carries or sit for parts of their career can show production past the age of 30, McGahee at 28 could like Thomas Jones be as good when he turns 32.

Have Ngata take the snap with McClain at HB and Cody at FB. Ngata fakes a handoff to McClain and follows those 600 pounds into the endzone! :dancingbanana: :lolpoof:

I think Ngata will be a good full back. He will be able to truck through defenders like train.
