Is David Reed A Possible Replacement For Mase?

16 posts in this topic

After reading how prolific David Reed has been as a receiver and his tough as nails description and precision route running attributes, I was just thinking if we had a diamond in the rough?? What do you guys think?

I'd like to see him play a down in the NFL before I call him a 'diamond in the rough'. I wouldn't put David Reed and Derrick Mason in the same sentence until Reed proves himself.

As far as being a diamond in the rough we wont know right away. The kid obviously has some skill or he wouldnt be here. Im excited for training camp so I can see him in person. Im sure he will be here throughout pre-season and if he doesnt make the team at the very least I hope he makes the practice squad.

On a side note, his story almost has a little Michael Oher flavor to it. Maybe the next blockbuster movie huh?

Maybe eventually, but not for a while. He does not have much experience running precise routes because he played in a spread offense, but did look like he was learning in the senior bowl practices. Just how well it stuck, we won't know til TC(just another thing to look forward to). I can see his career mirroring Mase's in a best case scenario. He plays returner and ST for a couple of years, then gets inserted into the rotation and eventually coming on top in his 4th or 5th year. He is definitely not ready this year and most likely next year either(unless he stuns in TC). The thing he has going for him is that his hands are already better than Williams/Smith/Harper/Riley's right now in my opinion. We just drafted a lot of "hands" guys in the draft. Right now, he has to work to make the team.

It's important to note that the majority of Ravens fans have likely never seen much of David Reed's college career -- or even a single game of his, period. It's far, far too early to pass judgment on a guy who we've only seen highlight reel clips of, and to be fair, the only people that can make an accurate assessment of him are the Ravens coaching staff, the Ravens front office, Reed's Utah teammates and coaches, and Utah football fans and students who've seen him play.

It's not really fair to say that Reed was drafted directly to replace Mason, as it's never as simple as getting a guy on the field to replace someone's production and ability. But could Reed eventually be a replacement for Mason? Possibly...but not anytime soon, and certainly not this upcoming season, when there's only one football and so many other talented guys fighting for it on each down.

Let's see if the guy can nail down a job returning kicks or punts before we talk about him replacing a near-HOFer like Mason.

I've just become very wary of putting praise upon any player/draftee before they have hit the field. A few weeks ago, a poster unearthed a thread that was made when Demetrius Williams was drafted a few years ago, and, of course, I had proclaimed him to be the next great receiver. It didn't turn out that way. In any case, we'll see how David Reed looks soon enough, give him some time.

I like the kid's attitude. He will be a very hard worker. He may get his number called a few times this year, but it is very difficult for a receiver to come out of the draft, start and be successful. I hope he will become a great player in the NFL. We have not been able to draft a good receiver.

His immediate impact would be in the slot so I'm not sure he is a true #2 receiver, but could be a deadly #3 as he is really tough going across the middle but still has the speed and route running ability to stretch the field. It does bring up an interesting question about the Ravens receiving corps after Mason retires, its going to be Boldin and who else?

I'd like to think a receiver like Riley or Harper steps up to fill that #2 role as they have the prototypical size you look for (something Mase doesn't have).

Agreed 100%.
The guy hasn't played a down in NFL, not to mention he's got 5-6 players ahead of him on depth chart. Until, and if he makes few TD catches, then maybe, we can talk about putting him in the same sentence with D.Williams.

It sure would be great if that were the case.....and he performed like Mase. As stated earlier in this thread only time will tell.

Forget not even seeing him play in a game. We haven't even seen him with pads on. I like this kid though. As long as he plays as well as he does without his pads on, he could be a weapon for us for years to come.

Watching his college tape and the highlights from passing camp really made me excited to see what this guy has. However, I want to see him in action before I compare him to Mase. But I know what you mean, he is a great route runner with soft hands and the ability to YAC it up. Im hoping he can be our Mase.

That being said, I would place a bet saying he will have a more prolific career than Clayton. Just gonna leave it at that.
