Top 5 Ravens & Colts Of All Time.

48 posts in this topic

Hey Dave, don't think that I was talking down about the Colts players of old. I made a point to give respect where respect is due. In fact, I see both sides of the argument. True, players today have better size (generally) and may be quicker. But also true is the fact that offenses today have more rules designed to help them than the D, such as Roughing the Passer. Another thing is the desire, the determination factor. Players of old may have had more determination/desire than today's players, because great players didn't get nearly the amount of pay a BACKUP Qb gets, so they had to have the heart and guts.

Top 5: 1. John Unitas 2. Ray Lewis 3. Raymond Berry 4. John Ogden 5. Jim Parker

While it's true that today's guys are bigger and faster overall it doesn't mean that all the guys who played in the 60's/70's couldn't have played today. Some would still kick ***. Especially some of the QB's notably Johnny U. The QB's that played in the pre-1978 era had to cope with rules that made it much tougher to pass the ball. My opinion is that Johnny U. would have a field day out there with the current rules. He would absolutely tear the league up. He would love the current blitz schemes teams are using and would make them pay. OMG would he make them pay. LOL.

Just one (older) mans 2 cents.

Dave, Nothing with 2 old cents worth, now between the 2 of us we have 4 cents.

Johnny Unitas would have a field day today and Ed Reed would be awesome back in the day when a safety could literally mug a WR. And Ray lewis playing behind Big Daddy Lipscomb , Art Donovan, Ordell Braase and Gino Marchetti....wow

Jimmy Orr, John Mackey, Bruce Laird, Ted Hendricks, and Alan Ameche deserve honorable mentions, I'd say.

Derrick Mason deserves mention for the Ravens, too.

appreciate the input from you guys who saw the colts play. definitely not going to argue as i dont have the first hand experience to do so. great point on the rule changes as its something i definitely did not take into consideration. again to my point, and why i will not argue, players who we see in live action as youngsters always seem better than those our children or younger siblings grow up idolizing. like in the NBA, to me no one will ever compare to jordan, not kobe or lebron, but my younger brother preaches lebron...

things are just more spectacular and vivid as children or when younger... further, not having first hand experience of the colts i cannot comment, bc all i have are opinions, stories, and stats. to go by those, players could be great or terrible depending on whose opinion i listen to so its futile to do so. thats why i stuck to just ravens, its what i know. no disrespect to the colts i just didnt feel i had the right to place them. obviously unitas is top 2 on any list, but i didnt include him bc id be throwing him on there bc its what ive been told to do... which is an injustice to him in its own right bc i couldnt justify with an argument why hes #1 or #2 and a man that great definitely deserves such an argument.. and a lengthy one at that

I definantly think you can't put Grbac as worse than Kyle Boller

Grbac, Boller, etc. were definitely not good but not quite horrifically bad. DeRon Jenkins, Donnie Brady, Ethan Brooks and others belong on the "worst" list. Corey Ivy was good on special teams but had no business playing corner. He was covering Hines Ward, Larry Fitzgerald...that was really Rex Ryan's fault more than his. He was good blitzing from the nickel, but then against almost everyone is.

Lenny Moore (HOF) isnt on many lists.... he should be.
[/quote]

You're right, he should be. The reason he isn't may be because he made it look so easy. He's in the HOF for a reason but he does get overlooked.

I'm not even old enough to have any memory of the Colts playing in Baltimore (I was 2 when they bolted), but I would think that any Top 5 Colts/Ravens list would have to include Gino Marchetti.

Now that's a nice list. The only change I would make would be to switch Ray Ray and Johnny U.

Yea that was a close one in my book, the only reason I put Ray first is because his career isnt over.

I mean if he takes off this season and the next he can easily surpass Unitas

While Lenny Moore does deserve mention, I don't think he belongs on the list. He's a lower tier HOF running back while there are several players who are up there in the GOAT discussion for their positions.
