Ravens weigh pursuit of Culpepper

By Jamison Hensley

Originally published June 8, 2007

The Ravens wouldn't be the leading candidate to sign soon-to-be released Daunte Culpepper, but they have not eliminated the possibility of adding the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, a league source said.

Because the Ravens are committed to Steve McNair as their starter, it's unsure whether Culpepper would want to come here since he might have an opportunity to compete for a starting job elsewhere, the source added.

Culpepper, who is expected to be cut by the Miami Dolphins, has been linked to the Ravens because McNair is 34 and backup Kyle Boller is only signed through this season.

The Ravens, though, have not actively pursued Culpepper. They passed him over last year to acquire McNair instead.

Culpepper has asked for his release after the Dolphins traded for Trent Green. In his first season with Miami last year, Culpepper played in only four games.

i dont think we should go after Culpepper we got Mcnair and Kyle Boller even tho he is only under contract threw this year we have Troy Smith who im sure will be a good QB in the League but Culpepper could be a mistake i dont think he well be 100% and we are obvisouly building for the future for Troy Smith so i dont see us going out and trying to get another Vet QB

Culpepper is near 30 and maybe be 32 by the time he legitimatly gets a chance to start with us.

I think we are plenty good at QB right now.

Steve has another 1-2 years ( hope / think)

Kyle may or may not ever start for us again.

And I honestly think after holding a clipboard for 1-2 seasons Troy just might be the QB we have been looking for for a dozen years.

Too early to tell but it looks good so far.

NFL channel reported that Jacksonville and Baltimore are interested in the now released Culpepper. I hope thats not true of the Ravens! A more appropriate name for him is Cul-lemon.

Well it looks like he has been released or traded a couple of minutes ago. He will probably join Mike Tice in Jacksonville.

NO DEAL YET FOR DAUNTE?

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the exit of quarterback Daunte Culpepper from the Dolphins' practice field had nothing to do with his status, and that he currently is a member of the team.

Schefter also says that Culpepper wasn't taken off the field by the team, and that Culpepper won't be released this weekend or "anytime soon," but that he could be traded at any moment.

Stay tuned.

We have a QB of the present in Steve Mcnair. A backup quarterback who can fill in for 4 or 5 games and keep us in the hunt with Kyle Boller. I also believe we have a quarterback of the future in Troy Smith who just needs 2 or 3 years to mature under Mcnair. Signing Culpepper would be a mistake as it would add to the pressure on all 3 QB's and wast valuable cap room without adding much of anything besides a better backup for a season or two.

Won't make sense to carry 4 QBs on the dpth chart. Mcnair is our QB. We have to give T. Smith time to develop. Boller is getting paid alot of money this year to drop to 3rd string. Culpepper is a shell of his former self. Why blow up our alreadt tight salary cap to sign someone who may not be fully recovered from a serious knee injury.

bringing Culpepper in would also make things difficult to get the new deal worked out with Suggs so i highly doubt they will bring him in with Mcnair,Boller and Smith their is no need to bring one more QB in

Hate to break it to you guys, but I'm afraid that Troy Smith may be a product of the system at Ohio State. And after a year or two, the Ravens aren't going to be in the greatest shape; with the departures of Mcnair, Ogden, Ray getting pretty old, and contracts expiring. I think this year it the last legitimate super bowl push for a little while.

Billick wouldn't have drafted Smith if he didn't think Smith had the potential to develop into the Ravens eventual starter. I think you have to give him 2-3 years to learn from McNair and then a few years as a starter before you can you determine if he is a product of OSU. I'd like to think he won the Heisman because of his ability as a QB and not solely just because of his supporting cast. Just my two cents.

We have to go with Troy Smith we can't afford to go after another vet QB. We have to look towards the future.

I don't see how Culpepper on the roster puts pressure on Mcnair. There's no doubt Mcnair is the starter and Culpepper gets another year of being able to rehab and be brought along into the system. Culpepper with proper coaching would be a great addition, outisde the issues with his fumbling

Everybodys forgetting about Drew over there in Europa hes a solid #3 at least

Drew Olson is not an NFL caliber player...much less a solid #3...Finnerty is a better prospect IMO...
