Ravens Sign Travis Fisher

69 posts in this topic

Maybe the Ravens really can "fix" the CB position and basically just go into a DB holding pattern (nothing great but nothing that will kill the team in penalties)...

As of right now we know we have Foxworth and Carr on the roster. But when we add Fisher and a (according to training camp reports) more and more impressive Cary Williams who has been getting reps with the #1s and has good size at 6'1 185, then add in a dark horse like KJ Gerard or Ashton Hall, or another veteran signing and the DB corps will be... okay ... until Webb and Washington return and when they do the depth behind them will look pretty good and expand, protecting against injury so if in the playoffs you have a Foxworth or Webb go down, you have a guy who played the first 6 or so games to back him up instead of a green back up. Yeah this Cary Williams guy, I'm really intrigued and have a feeling he could be an impact player in 2010 for us to start the year. Word is the coaches like his size, length, vertical, and he has been holding his own with the 1s thus far...

Foxworth, Williams, Carr, Fisher (to start)

Foxworth, Webb, Washington, Williams, Carr, Fisher (mid season)

Yeah, the Ravens will be fine at DB. No need to trade Gaither for one unless they are a legit shutdown corner.

I think you are making a big mistake in slamming Chris Carr. He did more than hold his ground toward the end of the season. If you re-watch some of the games, you will see he improved.
I love what I hear, "Fisher can be no worse than Walker." How true.

Rotoworld had said Fisher is pretty much done when they reported the team extended him a try-out offer. Guess they were wrong.

Quotes from Harbaugh regarding Fisher: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Travis-Fisher-makes-a-good-impression-during-Ravens-tryout.html

I knew it was coming down. Certainly good pickup for depth. While Fabian and Webb are rehabing, consider this - as of this time we have Foxworth as CB1, and we might have 3-way battle for CB2 between C.Carr, C.Williams and T.Fisher and possibly K.J.Gerard - interesting development.
And what about new #44 - Ashton Hall ?!!!

Fisher hasn't been officially signed yet but it could happen Wednesday.

Both Harbaugh and Mattison have praised Williams saying he had a good camp and Cary reportedly rotated with Carr for 1st team duties.

As for Gerard, he seems to be on the outside looking in.

Sadly, it doesn't appear our boy Ashton made many plays but Prince Miller turned heads.

Yeah, Cary Williams stock is rising.
Prince Miller? I thought he got crushed by rookie TE? Did they play Ashton at corner or safety?

LOL! That made for a funny picture but it was just one play. Multiple sources have praised Miller for his play at CB and in the return game:

I've seen nothing regarding Hall.

Yes see this is why I have said we are over reacting when it comes to our corner depth. We have guys on the team who can be ready. I'm so glad to see Cary Williams getting some time and impressing the coaches, I like him too. This is sort of off topic but he may have a low rating on Madden but he is a good nickel back. I use him on Madden as my nickel(with Foxworth and Webb as my starters) and my secondary is great. I hope Williams does enough to impress the team to where he can be our nickel or just maybe a starter one day.

If Carr's still playing like he was at the end of the season, and Williams is "outperforming" him, we could finally have some talented depth at corner for a change. The past few years there has been zero talented depth, just bodies, outside of the starters. I'd feel very comfortable with Foxy, Webb, Fab, Carr, Williams, and Fisher as our corner situation if it really is playing out like it seems. I'll be interested to see how it all turns out.

I don't know anything abt Fisher's past play, but Coach H said he liked what he saw this weekend, so ....

I'm curious abt two other corners, one out of the UFDA pool and one released pro:

Jake Morris, Weber State, 6-0, 195, supposedly signed by the Ravens a week or so before the minicamp started; and
Ken Lucas, Seattle Seahawks, 6-0, 205

anyone know what happened w/ these guys?

I thought for sure the Raiders were going to take Yamon at #1 overall

He may have been hilarious in Madden, but everytime he went back to take a kick I had to thank God I was in a sports bar; if not I'd have thrown every glass I owned at the TV during the season. He sucked!

Fair enough but when he was he arrogant?
When he was interviewed on Scott Garceau and they asked what it was like now that he was playing much better and he was like "I dunno what your talking about, Ive been playing great all season. I dunno what you mean". Needless to say they changed the subject.

Glad to hear about Cary and Prince though.

Never heard that but I'll take your word for it.

I'm happy to hear Williams and Miller stepping up too.

Apparently, Fisher is going to have to prove himself again before the team signs him: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Ravens-invite-Travis-Fisher-to-next-OTA.html

Anyone who says Foxworth didn't improve didn't watch the entire season. Once the Ravens figured out he couldn't be put on an island he started playing better knowing he had someone behind him. Im not saying hes a beast but I think he went from HORRIBLE to avg which worked out well.

Nobody says Foxy is horrible, just that he's average and getting paid like he's elite. It was unfortunate situation where we reached and paid for an average player in a position we haven't addressed in a while.

Like I said a while ago, the team has addressed the CB position, just not with a first round pick.

It'll be interesting to see how our depth chart for CBs turns out with Washington and Webb still out. That 2CB spot could get ugly.

Ed_Reed 20 is right. Ladarius Webb, Fabian Washington, Frank Walker, Corey Ivy and numerous other draftees/free-agents have all been attempts at solving our CB issue. The team has addressed it, just not with consistent success, unfortunately.

I wish the coaches would at least say something about Ashton Hall, so we know where he stands so far. I guess silence speaks for itself, although I hope that isn't the case.

Heres an example: A lot of pre-draft talk was based around the Buccaneers needing to "address the DT position" in this years draft, yet they had 5 DT's on their squad..

The corners we had before Foxy were CMac, Rolle, Ivy, Walker and Fabian, of those 5 CMac and Rolle were old and injury prone, Ivy and Walker couldn't cover, and Fabian was a bust.

I wouldnt call Fabe a bust but hes not a number 1 corner. I believe we've needed to find CMAC's replacement since 2007...

Now I get you. Not to get into an English lesson but when you used the word "haven't", I thought you were talking over the years, not prior to last season.

Fabian played lights out coverage in 08 before Fox came in, and we only paid a 4th for him. Hardly could call him a bust, even after an inconsistent year last year.

Fox had a handful of bad games last year, but anyone who can shut down Moss, Marshall, Bowe and Chad Johnson twice is anything but average.

Webb is a package of dynamite. The only thing that could stop him last year was an injury.

I'm satisfied that we've done a good job with the secondary. Considering the new system, an inconsistent pass rush, injuries and the quality of the QBs we had to face (Manning, Brady, Favre, Rapelessberger twice, Palmer twice, Rivers and Rodgers), I'd say it was pretty damn impressive that we STILL had the 8th ranked pass D last year.

Fair enough. My take is that having one healthy corner who can start going into and coming out of this offseason means we didn't address the position, I can accept BPA drafting but it means loading up weaker positions with practice squad bodies.

I said he was a bust in Oakland, we got him for a mid round pick but he's no top flight corner, 5 years in he's not scaring many QBs.

Overall it's just conjecture, I'm still shellshocked at having to watch our corners get beaten like Rihanna. We were spoiled by CMac and Rolle with Reed over the top.
