Flacco Vs Ryan

74 posts in this topic

As you all know the Ravens face the NFC South this year. That means we get the Falcons which is toward the middle of the season if I am correct. I have waited so long for the Ravens to go up against the Falcons for no other reason then for Flacco to beat Matt Ryan head to head. I know quite a bit of Flacon fans and they for the last 2 years have been trying to convince me that Matt Ryan is soo much better. This will be a big season for the Ravens offense to see if they really get things together but this small battle between 08 drafted QBs will be a thing to watch. Now for any Falcon fans who happen to read this Im not saying Matt Ryan sucks im just saying hes not better then Flacco. Qbs are judged on playoff wins, head to head matchups, and SB rings.

If this post has already been done my mistake, I haven't been on here much recently.

Part of me can already hear the excuses from some Atlanta fans if we beat their Falcons:
"Flacco had more weapons than Ryan!"

Ryan has had Roddy White and Gonzalez....I would love to see them go head to head but our defense will prob. make Matt Ryan look like a rookie.

Yes, Ryan has White and Gonzalez. However, Flacco now has Boldin, Mason, Heap, Rice, Stallworth, Pitta, and Dickson. Granted, it'll remain to be seen how effective Stallworth, Pitta, and Dickson turn out to be this season.

Even without having met in the regular season yet, Joe Flacco has already "beaten" Matt Ryan. When comparing their short careers, Flacco and Ryan have comparable numbers, the difference being that Flacco has improved from Year 1 to Year 2 while Ryan has regressed in that same span. However, Flacco's playoff wins are what separate the two right now. Additionally, Flacco's early success has come with fewer weapons at his disposal than Ryan.

Their first game against each other (preseason notwithstanding) will provide bragging rights galore for the winner's respective fanbase.

I think its still funny how ESPN and NFL Network still think Ryan's better than Flacco. We Ravens fans know that hes not, and they will know after they play each other.

Okay, first I want to say I was wrong about Ryan.
Heading into the draft, I felt Flacco was far and away the best QB in that class, and prayed to god the rumors were false that we were targeting Ryan.
I thought that Ryan had huge bust potential. Clearly, I was wrong about that. Ryan has the talent to be a good, even very good QB. No one can take that from him.
However, I do still think he is over rated.

On the other hand, Flacco has been a better player so far, and with less weapons.
Now that Flacco also has an elite WR and elite RB like Ryan has enjoyed, this whole debate is going to look very silly by year's end.

Flacco is on the verge of greatness. Yes, I said greatness. Ryan is not near that level yet. Time will tell if he ever will be. For his and his fans' sake, I hope he does.

Until then, we got the two biggest steals of the 2008 draft --- Flacco and Rice.

Just wondering. Who's gonna block John Abraham? Gaither, Oher, someone else?? I'd love to find out soon.

I think the Falcons are gonna be really good next year, but we'll be even better. I'll be lookin forward to this Thursday nighter.

I don't think you can really say whose the better QB as of right now. Although this upcoming year will say a lot.

They are both very promising QB's who have the potential to be special. Flacco had the defense, while Ryan had the weapons. Now Flacco has the weapons to go along with the defense, while Ryan has the defense to along with his offense. Their really is no excuse for either of these QB's this year, barring an injury.

Ya you can. statistically Joe is way better. In terms of upside Joe has the arm, accuracy and now Weapons. Other than that the only thing Ryan has over Flacco is his looks. The guy is already doing Ads on T.V. But thats cool Falcons can buy those Razors during the playoffs while we win the superbowl.

Matt Ryan first 2 years:
6356 yards, 38 td, 25 int, 60%, 7.1 yards per pass

Joe Flacco first 2 years:
6584 yards, 35 td, 24 int, 62%, 7.2 yards per pass

That being said... Joe isn't WAY better than Ryan. They're about dead even (statistics wise).

What's also interesting is that in both men's rookie year, both of their teams went 11-5. Then in both men's sophomore years, both teams went 9-7. So they both have the same win-loss record to go along with their similar statistics.

As a Ravens fan, my heart and head tell me that Flacco is the better of the two. However, I believe that it's going to be a few more years before there can be any definite statement saying "Flacco is better than Ryan" or vice versa. The chances of them having similar numbers their entire career is low, so we should see a definitive favor in statistics in a few years.

Thanks for the stats. I don't think many of us (including myself) realized in terms of statistics just how close the two were.

Forget stats. We all know Ryan has had Hot Rod, Tony G and Michael Turner there to make him look good.

Here's how you determine which QB is better.

If your life depended on you winning, who do you want to be quarterbacking your team.... Flacco or Ryan?

You have a pair of okay WRs, a decent offensive line, and a very good running back. Your defense is shaky, so you will need to lean heavily on your offense to win, and survive.

Who do you take?

Dotn forget they have peria jerry who they drafted last year and they got Sean Witherspoon this year. In FA they signed Dunta Robinson. So its not only John Abraham who you have to watch out for.

Thomas DeCoud is an underrated safety too.

We'll have to see with Jerry and Witherspoon, but Robinson should end up covering Boldin. Well....I mean trying to cover Boldin. We'll see lol.

people always bring up, how Flacco didn't have anyone beside Mason as a reviver, but you must also remember Ryan didn't have the running game, since Turner was injured for most of the year.

It was also very impressive to see Ryan lead a game winning drive against the #1 defense in the NFL last year.

I personally prefer Flacco, but thats only because I'm a Raven fan. If I was neither a Raven or Falcon fan, than its pretty hard to tell whose the better QB as of right now.

I asked this site on a Titans and Steelers forum and atleast 70-80% said Flacco was better, so there is some opinions from non-Ravens fans.

Well it was there his rookie season when Turner finished 2nd in the league in rushing. It really helped his development going into his sophomore year.

Well most casual fans will look at the playoff wins and automatically declare Flacco the better QB. Their defense wasn't even close to our defense.

I heard the same fans say Ryan was the better QB when Flacco had that horrible stretch from the Raiders and Pats game.

Really at this point its like arguing Manning or Brady. I'm not saying they are those kind of players. Not even close. But great points can be made on both half's.

I personally would take Flacco because he fits our team better. But thats like me choosing Brady over Manning.

When you look at the highlight reels and stuff. It looks like Flacco can get the ball further, I mean you don't see Ryan throwing the ball at Clay disc in the air such as the Reebok commercial.

Its no mistake its a Thursday night game. The NFL network craves these kind of matchups.
[/quote]
Lol I'll bet it's a snooze fest. :P

Last year it seemed like all of the hightly touted Thursday night games were blowouts.
