Ray Lewis On Tebow This Morning On ESPN Radio

6 posts in this topic

This morning on ESPN Radio, Ray Lewis brought up an interesting point about Tim Tebow.

He was confused as to why Tebow received so much special treatment and help. I heard more of Cowherd's reponse than of Ray's segment, im wondering if anyone else caught this.

Cowherd was basically saying how Ray's point was valid, and began pointing out other "black" QB's who did not receive the same help and guidance as Tim: Chris Leak (same school) Tommy Harris, Troy Smith, Charlie Ward to name just a few.

I wanted to post because I am proud that Ray speaks his mind and doesn't hesitate around touchy subjects...I feel what he is sayin. There is also some sentiment that Tebow will have a bullseye on his back because of all this, and many, many NFL players share the same sentiment towards him.

Personally, I think Tebow did receive special treatment. I am not one to speculate as to why, but when you hear Ray present his argument, and listen to Cowherd analyze it, it starts to hold some weight. Especially when compared to other similarly successful college Qb's who came out in the last 15 years who did not receive the same attention in hopes to getting them to succeed in the league.

Just some food for thought.

Well, to be fair Tebow was a much greater college success then any of them. Quite frankly, he might be the best college football player ever.

Another thing he's got going is he doesn't have any character issues. How many talented kids shoot themselves in the foot with character issues. Denver is never gonna have to worry about Tebow raping some girl in a bathroom.

I don't think Tebow got a free pass because he's white. Quite frankly, NFL coaches want to win and they will take whoever they think can win. If that wasn't the case the football field wouldn't be dominated by black guys.

That said, I don't think Denver made the right choice with Tebow. Whether or not he pans out is not the issue, its the price they paid for such an unknown quantity. They gave up too much for not a sure thing.

Heard it and Ray was right on target. Totally legit and fair question. Ray did not bring up race, BTW, Cowherd did. Ray said at the end "what makes him different from anybody else?", which is right on. I especially liked Cowherd bringing up Troy Smith as an example.

I don't know what kind of favoritism or "special treatment" Tebow is getting, but Ray pointed out Gruden's apparent interest in helping Tebow somehow as one example.

Ray is a good man and he was not being disrespectful of Tebow himself. His manner was calm and just truly questioning what's up with all the love on Tebow (after he was asked about it). Tebow is a bit of a phenomenon and feels a little "white-bread" to me, and I'm a white guy. I hate to talk race and its surely against forum rules, so I'll just leave it alone from here.

I also have no doubt Ray called or will call Tebow now that this is out, and will be up front with him about what was said. Ray has more than half the league on speed dial apparently, so if the kid stays in the league Ray will probably call him more often also.

First, THANK YOU for bringing this up!

Tebow got special treatment because he's a media darling. Everything he did was always on camera; from winning the Heisman to admitting the fact that he still hasn't gotten his cherry popped, which I thought was COMPLETELY unnecessary!

He's a good ol' Christian boy who came from a loving family, and blahblahblahuie3nrfdjklz;fjeiaow;fd!

I'm of the persuasion (in my psychotic, paranoid, conspiratorial mind) that there's pressure in the NFL front office to develop someone like Tebow to balance out the Roethlisbergers and the Pacmans that, in Goodell's words, "taint the NFL shield". "They" probably got to him as soon as he started making a name for himself...

<_<

it dosn't matter if he pans out he already sold his jersey enough to pay his contract... he could be good, josh McD made Orton look like a stud, but i think they picked him because he brought like 200,000 fans and god with him to denver... I hope he starts, but i think Quinn will win in TC

Though this is a valid debate and the conversation that's been had thus far has been thoughtful, this is a topic that is not allowed per the Code of Conduct.
