Football Scholarships?

8 posts in this topic

Hey guys, I was wondering how you can get a football scholarship? I've been loving football all my life and currently trying out for my Freshmen team at my school.

My question is do I have to get some friends to record me playing (WR) and send it to the college I would like to go to? (Boise State)

Thanks for the answers in advanced guys. :argdancingravensblueonwkk8: :ICONATOR_01040da29c18a4eed76047

Compiling a highlight reel from your high school career is one way of getting a football scholarship; make sure, however, that the video is edited reasonably well. By this, I mean make sure that you cut out filler and focus only on each play; this means taking out anything before each snap and after the whistle is blown. Don't put anything where you're showboating either, that just reflects poorly on you and makes you look like you're too cocky. Also, when using background music, try not to put anything with offensive lyrics or that would distract from the plays being made. Preferably, you'd want to use an instrumental (music with no vocals) or just use crowd noise.

Another avenue to explore is going to football camps; these camps get you exposure to scouts and athletic directors, all while sharpening your football skills.

Finally, you'll want to do exceptionally well in school. Usually, the players with the best grades and great numbers tend to get more attention than a player with great skills but horrible grades. Not only that, but your education will be your fallback option because there's always the chance you can get hurt in college.

The point is, if you work hard enough at ALL that you do on and off the field, you'll catch someone's eye eventually. Hard work never goes unnoticed.

My son got shanghi'ed his first week of school by his phys-ed teacher who is also the coach.
Depending on what school you are going to the coach and guidance take care of stuff like that. My son is in a Baltimore County HS. The more video you can get the better.

I notice you are not in MD, so I don't know how it works

Thanks for all the advice guys.

My mom signed me up for one camp already and a working out + speed program this Summer. I'm trying my hardest in everything currently, A honor roll student and working on my football skills after school. :mcnabbtddance:

Grades are extremely important, I can't stress that enough, and sometimes coaches will let that slide and that is NOT cool.

It's not something that will be easy and it take a lot of work if you are serious about it. Basically you NEED to STAND OUT from everyone else in HS. Good ole HS days haha.

I just want to touch on that.

Man, learn, learn, learn. Then learn some more. A quality education is worth far more than you can imagine. If football is your passion, that is great, but in all reality the odds of you making it as a career are not great. That is not meant as a personal attack. There are 1,000's upon thousands of people who want to play pro football. Some better than you some not so much. It is a flooded market as is any thing in sports and entertainment.

What I am saying is go for it, but have as much to fall back on as you possibly can. Dont put all your eggs in one basket. Even if football does become your career, odds are slim that you will play forever.

Good luck to you man. Work hard, play fair, it will be alright. Sounds like you are well on your way to that already.

To build further on that, football is only one aspect of your life. If you are fortunate enough to play it well at the high school and collegiate level, that's maybe 8 years of your life. If you move onto the NFL level, since the average career is anywhere from 3-5 years, that's no more than 13 years of your life total spent on football if you're even an average player. If you're an exceptional player, your pro career may last 10-12 years, maybe 15 tops if you're truly elite.

So, let's say you get that 15 years in the NFL. That's 23 years of your life spent on football -- and you'll only be in your late-thirties, early-forties by the time you retire from the league. You would still have the rest of your life ahead of you, and that's a lot of time on your hands.

Always, always, always pursue your education and keep thinking forward as to your future and what you would do as a backup plan for everything you do. Never ever assume that you'll be able to keep doing anything forever, because you never know when something will happen to derail you in any way.

With that said, the best of luck to you and I truly hope you succeed -- just know that the road will be tough, even just getting to college on an athletic scholarship.
