Kruger

Jared Allen is 270. Nothing wrong with his game. And as the Ravens don't always play 3-4 or 4-3, you have yourself a guy who can play the DE role on a number of looks, especially in the hybrid styles.

Paul Kruger is a beast. Another diamond in the rough much like Haloti Ngata he will become an important piece to the puzzle. Good things happened when this kid was on the field last year.

Jared Allen is only listed at 270, I would be willing to bet he is around 285. He is 6'6 remember and looks MUCH bigger than Kruger.

I think the Ravens should be more concerned with Kruger being quicker with his relentless motor than him being bigger and stronger. The team is in need of defensive linemen who can put pressure on quarterbacks. With the addition of Terrence Cody, teams running the ball is the least of our worries. Gregg, Ngata, and Cody can line up together in goal line and short yardage situations to eliminate the possibility of running up the middle.

Agree 100%.

All that size means nothing without the talent to match. As long as Kruger can anchor or be disruptive enough to draw double teams, there's no reason he cant play 3-4 DE at 270.

Agreed.. but isn't the concern that he won't have the strength to do that at 270?

Allen plays in a 4-3 where it's more important that the ends have that explosive first step to put moves on tackles.

If we run a 3-4 base and Kruger started at LDE, sure he'd be more disruptive pass rushing at 270lb than 290lb but I guarantee you he would get washed out of his gap assignments a lot easier. Gap integrity is crucial and with any law of averages you can't rely on Ngata and Cody to tie up 4 blockers every single time, Kruger would get run at.

did anyone watch video of kruger last year as a OLB they had to devote 2-3 lineman to him at all times so the math 3+3+3=9 normaly unless your unballanced even with a TE that is only 7-8 lineman Anyone else feel sorry for aposing QBs

i seriously doubt that 3 DLmen get triple teamed, even if kruger turns into the beast we are all hoping for, a double team is usually as far as that would go. on that note, using your logic 2+2+2=6 thats still the entire OL plus a TE/FB/RB... add in a blitzing LB or 2 and its gonna be tough to stop

No one gets triple-teamed in the NFL. And you have to be pretty darn special to receive the attention of two blockers (Freeney, Wilfork, Rodgers, Ngata, etc). Don't bank on Kruger getting doubled, he has to actually play first.

I'm more worried about his stamina than anything.
I think Paul's two best assets are his intelligence/anticipation, and a very quick first step. Kid may not wow you in the 40-, but thats not important in the front seven...what is important there is how he can accelerate within a 10 yard radius in any direction, and he has got to be one of the quickest in the league in that aspect.
His weight gain won't affect either of those attributes, but if he doesn't focus on his cardio as well, which is hard to do when you're already working out like a demon to gain mass, it can definitely wear him out over the course of a game, and the season.

But my prediction is that Kruger will be the breakout player of the year for us, and possibly even defensive MVP.
Is that a ballsy prediction for a second year guy with limited playing time under his belt? Hell yeah.
Is Kruger good enough to pull this off and make me look like I actually know what I'm talking about? Hell yeah.
Well said, I agree with 99%. I'm not sure about MVP, but hey, who knows?
It was said he's going to be 100% Defensive End and will be practicing and taking snaps as DE according to DC Mattison, so there won't be any competition between him and Sergio Kindle (which will be OLB). I could see Paul Kruger getting a lot more playing time on the line of scrimmage, especially on 3rd downs.

How big do they ideally want him? 290-300?
I think they'd be happy with 280-290. You don't want to add too much weight to his frame and lose any of the speed that makes him so effective. I think they realize that he's going to be a little undersized by normal NFL DE standards, but that's OK considering that he used to be a QB.
