As most of us thought, Kruger is putting on a little weight to play on the line.

I think it may take at least half a season to get used to playing at a little heavier weight. I will be interested to see how much more he plays this year.

I feel like he can get at least 10-15 more pounds this off season..he will be a lot stronger and may lose SOME quickness and speed..but his strength will make up for it..he should see the field a little bit more this year..and hopefully he can take over for pryce after hes gone..i wouldnt be suprised if he gets up to 290 by then

I'm more worried about his stamina than anything.
I think Paul's two best assets are his intelligence/anticipation, and a very quick first step. Kid may not wow you in the 40-, but thats not important in the front seven...what is important there is how he can accelerate within a 10 yard radius in any direction, and he has got to be one of the quickest in the league in that aspect.
His weight gain won't affect either of those attributes, but if he doesn't focus on his cardio as well, which is hard to do when you're already working out like a demon to gain mass, it can definitely wear him out over the course of a game, and the season.

But my prediction is that Kruger will be the breakout player of the year for us, and possibly even defensive MVP.
Is that a ballsy prediction for a second year guy with limited playing time under his belt? Hell yeah.
Is Kruger good enough to pull this off and make me look like I actually know what I'm talking about? Hell yeah.

280-285 would bre great, I dont see that happening this year. Not with Baltimore Weather in training camp. Maybe by next season.

Well put. I always thought Kruger would have a break-out year this year, but man that post really got me getting psyched for this season! That and the fact that the caps lost game 7 the other day. Ugh, nothing to do until then, except watch the O's lose.. lol.. but not really : /
[/quote]

As a fellow Crapitals fan, could we agree to never speak of that series again until next year? I may never recover from that one. As for Kruger, I see him making a big impact. Obviously, adding the weight will help him grind at the point of attack on the D Line. The fact that we added to our front seven through the draft and Free Agency (I think the Cory Redding signing is biggeer than most people are giving it credit for) means that we have depth on the D Line and we can rotate fresh legs into the lineup at any given time. Will Kruger play every snap this year? Absolutely not, but expect him to be on that line for every passing situation and expect him to thrive.

If McCrary can impart some of his wisdom to Kruger then weight will not be an issue. I don't think Mac ever played at more than 250 yet look at what he was able to do.

Just my opinion.

I don't think his weight is nearly as important as motor and technique. I didn't get to see a whole lot of him in college. And last year, we hardly saw him at all... but in the very limited action, he happened to make one of the biggest plays of the season making a game winning interception.

Dwight Freeney and Mathis from the Colts aren't that big, and they used to get a lot of pressure on opposing QBs. I think Kruger is ready physically, I just hope he's gotten better with technique or whatever else is preventing him from getting on the field.

The defensive line is going to be the key for this team all season. I hope they've added the right pieces. Can't wait to see Suggs, Cody, Ngata, and Kruger all lined up together.

And Kruger just has an awesome last name. People will start coming to the stadium dressed in striped sweaters and tattered fedoras.

well if you do that... then he really wouldn't be able to get pressure on the QB.... being dead and all

The reason he needs to be bigger/stronger.. is because (if I'm correct) we usually go off of the 3-4..... a DE's job in the 3-4 is mainly to help eat up OL men.. if he can get pressure while doing this.... all the better; The D-Line in the 3-4 is used to set up pressure for the LB's by clearing lanes

The stronger/faster you are... the more chances they are going to try and double team you....

Well, Jared Allen is only 270 pounds, but the Vikes run a 4-3. I remember us complaining about Mattison running the 4-3 before the bye week. Now it may be the other way around.

Of course Kruger needs to add weight if he's going to play DL exclusively, how many 3-4 ends in the NFL are 270lb?

Pass rushing DEs tend to be lighter for the speed. The reason most 3-4 linemen are bigger is because your run defense is 3 up front instead of 4. With Ngata and Cody I think we've got the run locked up.

Cody likely won't be on the field all the time and even when he's there, teams run stretches and tosses so Kruger will need to add more bulk.

Average weight of a defensive end in the NFL is 278 lbs. According to 3 google websites...

There are many 4-3 DEs that bring that average down.

Yeah some 4-3 ends are 250 pounds. Adewale Ogunleye for example. 3-4 guys are bigger. I think we could get away with him being 285, in part because we can trot out a couple of 350 pounders with him. 3-4 DLers should really be 300 pounds though.
