New Draft Picks

56 posts in this topic

I know there is an existing thread on the draft but rather than reading through 100+ pages of posts that is rapidly growing by the minute, would there be a way to find out peoples thoughts on who we picked?

I know nothing about them, but I know there are some very smart people here.

Kindle was a steal imo (guy had round 1 talent for sure).

Cody can be a beast. I wasn't too big on him but a lot of people like him and I have faith in Ozzie that they got him for a reason.

Dickson has the best hands out of any TE in the draft (Hernandez is also a good pass catching TE). Dickson, I dont know much about, but seems like he can block some (might have to work on it a bit) but he can be effective as he has some speed and decent size.

All in all I think it was really a solid 2nd and 3rd round today. We drafted people to make an immediate impact. Hope that helped some

Kindle. Meh. Meh. That's how I feel about our first three picks. I'm even less impressed with Cody after watching the video of him on NFL.com. They showed him one on one against a center protecting a quarterback. Cody was COMPLETELY wrapped up by the one, yes one, center. Everyone's saying he'll demand a double team, and I just saw him effectively wrapped up by one center. Dickson, eh. I'll forgive Ozzie if AOA or Cox drops to us in the fourth. We need some help at the corners, we don't know when Webb or Fab will be back. That leaves us very, very thin.

Yea I just saw the same video of Cody. He is definitely a project but power of positive thinking! I really like the Kindle pick and Dickson is a solid pick to.
I think AOA will drop to our current position in the 4th, again positive thinking!

Well, AOA's gotta drop to the 16th pick in the fourth. I'm hoping that happens, but there have been times of surprises so far this year. So I'm not going to hold my breath.

I like the picks. Had I been charge, I wouldn't have drafted Dickson but I've been a fan of the guy for a while.

Kindle was a steal at pick 43 considering his physical tools and ability to rush the passer. He's basically a slightly smaller version of Suggs and has the potential to be just as good as him in the pros in my opinion. He should wreak havoc next season.

Cody certainly has issues(weight and conditioning) but the guy's size, dominance against the run and ability to collapse the pocket will make him an early impact player.

Dickson is a WR in a TE's body. He can separate from safeties with ease and has soft hands. He isn't a great blocker but isn't bad at it either and can learn.

Good day for the Ravens.

Like K Dog said, Besides Terrence Cody, I don't know too much about the players we drafted. But I have been watching highlights on you tube, and damn if I am not impressed. I can't wait to see these guys in Black and Purple!!

Link that video of Cody please, I just watched it and cant find it. He will definitely need some moves in his rush because that video was lackluster to say the least.

I definitely like the fact that Cody is aware of his problems and has dropped so many pounds. It speaks volumes of his work ethic. I think he will turn out fine.

Cody is purely a run stuffer. He's a two-down player because of his stamina and will never see a third and long situation.

I saw the video, and yes he was wrapped up by one. Then on the next play he went clean by the center, all because of his hands. Cody needs work with his hands and if he can improve there he'll be a solid force that commands a double-team every down. I think what we should be paying attention to right now, rather than one practice play, is the fact that his college team didn't let a 100 yard rusher the entire time he was there. Having a D that will completely shut down the run this year will be a huge asset and force quick throws against our now-improved pass rush.

It's a double-edged sword. Forcing teams to become one sided is great, but we saw how our secondary performed during the first half of the season. Even if Foxy continues his play like he did at the end of last season, then we at very least one good corner. The status of Webb and Fabian is very much up in the air, so we could be left with Foxy, Carr, Ivy, and Walker (I feel as if I'm forgetting someone?). That would leave us very weak against the pass, which teams would be forced to do thanks to the stalwart run defense.

I said all along he's purely a gap-filler and only effective against the run. His stamina is a huge deal breaker for me too.

I love the way Ozzzie approached this draft. When Dez did not drop in our lap, I told my T.V. bail out and go for depth. That's Ozzies way and we all know how it works! Love the picks! Pass rusher to free up T-Sizzle, wide body to help Haloti, and a TE to spell Todd, perfct! While there is no given in the draft, I love the fact that the Ravens did not panic. As I watched the first 3 rounds, I always watched the clock. I had to wonder, who was calling, who had their doubts, but every Raven pick that came up was, on the clock, pick in! Love it, love it. love it! True organazational comprehension, total understanding, intellengent discussion, and overwhelming understanding of the team's needs! Now for the sleepers, go gettem' Ozzie, you, and Eric, Rock!!!

This is a great point, the Colts didn't need much of a run game to overcome our team in the playoffs.

I could undertand the argument if he was a pass rusher, as a solid pass rush creates plays for CBs, but Cody is no rusher.

Let the guy develop. Not only that if he ends up demanding a double team like Ngata, then he wont need to be a pass rusher because that will open up the lanes for other players.

If he's not a rusher, he probably won't be doubled teamed on pass plays. But your right, maybe he'll develop.

if some guys still have to look them up on youtube you should be calm witch judging. i tbelieve that this could easily turn out as one of the best drafts ever in our short history.
btw: which DT is a every down lineman? tststs. sometimes i cannot understand the posts around. the reason AOA or else isn´t taken jet is that they aren´t 2nd or 3rd round talent.
i am so pumped with our guys. talking about kindle i mean come on, this is a absolutely steal!!! he should have gone in the top 20!!!!
so if you guys are still haters better go to youtube and check out a few hours of video like the ozman did for sure the whole last weeks.

Second, If you have proof that Ozzie watches YouTube for player film purposes, I'll eat my shoe on live television.

Sorta feel the same way about this draft. Instead of getting impact players on D we need if getting to the Superbowl this coming season is the goal, we draft 3 projects. The first of whom, DE/OLB Sergio Kindle may require microsurgery on his knee. The second, T Cody, may require a lotta time in the weight room to get his upper body strength to match his size and weight before he's ready to challenge Kelly Gregg. And the third, a TE who cannot block. Wouldn't it have been simpler to draft DE/DT Olrick, CB Kyle Wilson or CB Patrick Wilson in the first round.

I might be overly optimistic but I feel like Kindle is a slimmed down version of Tsizzle with the same fiery attitude. Cody is a mountain and combined with Ngata we will break our 39 game record of not allowing a 100 yard rusher. Dickson I think will deceptively help our offense by attacking the seams and the middle of the field, something we lacked almost completely last year.

I feel that each of these players will have an immediate impact next year, even if it is small compared to the grand scheme of things

So far so good as far as I am concerned. Kindle solves the passrush problem in a 3-4 and hopefully Kruger can be integrated into the side to solve the passrush problem in a 4-3. Cody gives us some depth at DT and takes off some pressure from Ngata who won't have to do everything on the D-line.

I think we'll get Cody's weight under control fairly easily. He just needs to hit the gym and turn some of that fat into muscle... and not pig out on food or whatever.

Now I just want Cox and/or AOA for the CB issues and then it's just projects and high risk-reward types like Bruce Campbell (and a QB, RB, WRs etc) and I'd take a 7th rounder on Holliday as our returns specialist. Reduces the risk of injury to Webb and he's easily be a upgrade over Carr. Stuff like that really.

We have a good shot at fixing a lot of needs on the team (hopefully) and I reckon Oz will do that. This part of the draft is where we shine.

I know some raven fans wanted a corner in the first round, but don't even think about overlooking that Ed Dickson pick.

I've been a religious follower of football for about a decade now. I run my own website, and really love to watch football. Now that my credentials are in place lol, I'll break down the Dickson pick for your guys.

First off, Oregon has produced more NFL prospects at the TE position than any other position. Justin Peele (00-01), George Wrighster (02-03), Tim Day (03-04), Dante Rosario(04-05), and now Ed Dickson (06-09). All of these guys were drafted at one point. Peele and Rosario are still in the NFL as backups. Wrighster is an FA, but had a couple good years with Jacksonville. All those TEs were amazing, but never have we had someone as consistent and amazing as Dickson.

He rarely drops the football, he runs so fluidly for a TE, you feel like he's a WR at times. His speed isn't jaw dropping, but he can show some bursts every once in a while. He certainly isn't a premier blocker, but he isn't as bad as some people have made him out to be. Our coaches constantly praised his blocking, and it's evident if you watch his game film. His statistical output isn't too great, but I blame Masoli and the coaches for not getting Dickson the ball more. He was easily our most dangerous weapon last year, and I was disappointed in our team for not involving him more.

Now, even with my kind words, all the attributes of his game that I mentioned above still need work and aren't his strengths. One of his strengths is his route running. He absolutely murders defenders with his routes. He's so smooth and athletic, he's born to run out there on the football field. Go watch his late touchdowns against Boise State in 2008. He owned their entire DB with our 5th string QB running the way. Just shows how Dickson can make life easier on any QB. Dickson's composure > all. Other than maybe one game in the last two years, I've rarely seen this dude freak out. His cold blooded attitude on the field has been a pleasure to watch, and you can now tab me as a ravens fan as long as he's playing for you guys.

Ankle breaking routes + cold blooded instincts can be viewed here:

CHEERS! If anyone has any questions about this pick, go for it. I love talking about football, and even moreso about my ducks.

Oh and last year I was on the Bills forums telling them that Byrd was an amazing pick for them.. He only lead the NFL in interceptions as a rookie. :) Dickson will be a good player, as long as he's healthy. Book it.

I think Kindle, if he stays healthy will be a much bigger impact player on D than any of the three guys I think you were trying to name.

While I agree, on paper our biggest need was CB, and I would have liked to see us take one by now a lot of that is due to injuries and the FO is in a much better position than any of us to know when those guys will be back.

If we had picked say Wilson in the first I'm pretty sure either Cody or Dickson would have been the pick in the second. So the question becomes would we have improved the roster more with one of those two and one of the guys you mentioned
or with both those guys, Kindle and whoever we get in the 4th (quite possibly a db).

I am in little doubt it's the latter.

Oh and I was reading this bio on another ravens forum and lol'd at how ignorant the person who wrote this was... I bolded a contradiction and underlined the biggest nonsense remark I've ever read on Dickson. Watch him for four years and then you'll know that comment is a joke.
70 - ED DICKSON
Height: 6-4¼ | Weight: 249 | 40-Time: 4.67

Official Bio

Strengths:
Tall with a rangy frame and long arms --- Smooth and athletic --- Very good speed --- Nice agility and body control --- Soft, reliable hands and will make the difficult catch --- Terrific ball skills --- Can stretch the field vertically --- Elusive and picks up yards after the catch --- Tough --- Will work the middle --- Solid blocker on the move --- Durable --- Productive.

Weaknesses:
Average bulk --- Short arms --- Not a polished route runner --- Isn't real strong or powerful --- Not much of an in-line blocker and utilizes poor leverage --- Has trouble beating the jam --- Could stand to be more physical --- Questionable instincts --- The product of a spread offense.

Notes:
Was a three-year starter for the Ducks --- Named 2nd Team All-Pac-10 in 2008 and 1st Team in 2009 --- Was actually moved to defensive end for a short time in 2006 --- Also excelled on special teams coverage units early in his college career --- Did not miss a game the last three years --- Owns the Oregon record for receptions by a tight end --- Will have to make the adjustment to a pro style system --- A mismatch waiting to happen and basically a wideout in a tight end's body --- A bit of a one-dimensional pass catching threat but excels in that capacity.
Yea this I know its one of the reasons I was skeptical aobut the pick. Everyone kept saying he would get a good push against a double team but from that video he needs a little work in that area, but he is our pick and I support him and the FO for making it. Hopefully he comes in and wants to play his tail off.
