Which Corner Should The Ravens Get?

45 posts in this topic

I know there are a lot of problems and questions surrounding the quarterback position but honestly, we really need a corner. Both C-Mac and Samari Rolle are over 30 and I think Rolle is a FA at the end of the year. Resigning him would be wise but he is already on the decline. The same goes for C-Mac who I think peaked in 2006. There are a lot of guys the Ravens could get in the draft. I personally would like to see two corners drafted but the coaches will probably only draft one. So the question is, who should the coaches choose? Here's a list of the top guys coming out:

Malcolm Jenkins

Mike Jenkins

Antoine Cason

Aqib Talib

Brandon Flowers(his teammate Victor Harris might forgoe his senior year)

Leodis McKelvin

Trae Williams

Initially, my favorite was Mike Jenkins but now that Brandon Flowers is entering the draft, I think he might be a second round steal. What do you guys think?

if We could possible save cason for second round, i would go with him. malcom jenkins has some previous "issues", but if the ravens are willing to spend 2 draft picks on mike jenkins and some other guy possible cason, then i'd be happy. we would have our future right there.

I like cason...but Combine is when I start making my final decision. The coverage of Bailey and aggressiveness of C Mac. Trade for high 1st and low second

1st round Kenny Philips SS

2nd round Antione Cason CB (aquire by trade)

2nd round Matt Hardy WR

What do you guys think of Leodis McKelvin ppl seem to be liking him and could also give us some depth at punt and kickoff returner

Our special teams is the least of my concerns. I want to improve offense and defense first. This post is spefically about corners and I like picking up Cason.

Although having a positional player provide depth at special teams is a nice luxury, it's exactly that: a luxury.

The team already has B.J. Sams potentially returning healthy (and with a new, bargain deal, as he is slated to become a free agent, I believe, and no one will want to take a chance on someone who just ended two seasons on IR), and Yamon Figurs in the rotation likely to take over as the main returner. Cory Ross proved his worth the last couple of games and may have earned a roster spot as the emergency returner. And Ed Reed has been fielding punts on occasion to mix things up.

I think resigning BJ and keeping Yamon we'll be good in that position. cornerback is the only must this season.

yeah the guy is still a good corner though and projected in some nfl draft rankings above many of the other corners it's not like i'm talking about a guy thats a punt and kickoff returner first. Although I do like Cason prob. the most for a good shutdown corner and see a lot of nfl potential in him.

I've endorsed the man before, and I'll do it again: Antoine Cason from Arizona is probably our best bet.

Mike Jenkins from South Florida, I've never seen play, so I can't say if the draft boards are justified in having him ranked higher. But from what I've seen of Cason, and from the frequency in which I've heard his name thrown out there by purported draft experts, there just has to be something there.

And again, the similarities between he and Chris McAlister are EERIE. This has to be an avenue that's worth exploring in the draft, given the chance to do so.

yeah it would be scary to have 2 McAlister type corners on the field there would never be a size advantage problem against wr's

Mike Jenkins is overrated in my opinion. Plus he's very immature and inconsistent.

Malcolm Jenkins seems pretty solid.

And you guys have me sold on Cason. How far in the draft do you think he will last?

Considering the needs of the teams that pick ahead of the Ravens, it seems as if Cason (or any other corner, for that matter) could fall into the team's lap easily.

However, I don't see Cason falling past the 1st round. Not by a long shot.

I love Malcolm jenkins, but im worried that he may be more suited to play safety and not corner. some scouts say he may never be a shutdown corner type guy. However he has the physical atributes to be successful in the NFL (4.3 speed) and has good instincts. Playing at Ohio state makes his adaptation to the NFL a smoother transition. I like Cason, but he is definitly not worth the 8th pick in the draft. Personally id try to move down to 15thish and try to pick up a late second early third. Malcolm Jenkins will be the only corner to go in the top 15. We could go another position in the first and pick up a Aquib Talib who has a good upside to him. Honestly there is alot of different directions we could go with draft a cornerback.

any player has the potential to become "great"....but its up to the player themselves to decide on howand when that is to take place.

How could you guys forget about Jack Ikegwuonu.

249808.jpg

This guy is a legitimate shut down corner who came out a year too early. Let's take a second round pick who would have been a

first round pick had he stayed at Wisconsin.

I honestly feel like we should like at a guy like James Hardy in the first round.

Back to Jack, he shutdown Mario Manningham which deserves a lot of credit since both him and Adrian Arrington tore apart the Florida secondary.

i think Ozzie has a wide variety of guys that he and his scouts have their eye on...and in which means they have a wide variety of talent to look at and evaluate...THEN choose the best available option

I said in another thread that the ravens should look at Jack Ikegwuonu in the second round. Maybe another player drops to them with the #8 pick and they miss out on Jenkins and Cason, Ikegwuonu would be a nice pick up as well as the other ones listed in this thread.

I love draft day, can't wait till April.

well i believe that if anyone talented player that is prospected to go high, and actually doesnt get drafted high and falls into our laps again like it did last season....you can bet for sure that Ozzie will not hesitate on taking that particular type of player in mind (ex. Troy Smith drafted in the 5th round)

As well as when Suggs dropped to us a few seasons ago. The Ravens practically ran the Suggs pick up to to podium.

This is where Ozzie and the gang earn their money. Who knows who's going to be the best player for our style of defense? That's what makes drafting players such an art. How you you tell how a player is going to match up with your team? I personally don't know how they do it, much less how they do it so well.

I agree thats why I have always had faith in Ozzie to find the best possible players and now a HC.

Exactly...Ozzie and his staff know talent and know what type of players they are looking for...and when they see them and they are within grasp/reach...they most certainly go after them....

I agree he seems to find a lot of guys with potential maybe not from the biggest best schools where there names aren't as well known and then with a little nfl level coaching turn out to get great

Asantee Samuel and Randell Gay are free agents too. With Moss up with a new contract, I think the PAts can't hold onto both of them, if they can't pick one up.
