NCAA: Touchdowns May Be Taken Away For Taunting

8 posts in this topic

Per ESPN and various news sources, the NCAA has approved a proposal to go into effect in 2011 that will toughen the penalty for taunting, going so far as to remove touchdowns and assess a penalty from the spot of the foul. (LINK)

It's important to keep in mind that the penalty only comes into effect in cases of taunting and does not apply to all celebrations. However, it is also important to note that many officials consider most forms of celebrations as taunting, including high-stepping into the endzone, slowing down before a score, and other such acts that seem innocuous but carry heavy interpretations.

I'm fully against this new rule and this only takes the fun out of the game, especially if any interpretation of taunting is allowed and occurs on an official-to-official basis. Thoughts?

They're about to get as bad as the NFL.

I don't like the decision either..especially if it's on a crew to crew basis.

This is so foolish.

Some players do celebrate too much on their way to and in the end-zone. But to give referees the power to take away TDs when they deem a celebration too flamboyant is just asking for trouble.

Define "taunting" in purely objective terms. Stumped? Of course. How can they expect officials to do it? They can't even get Pass Interference right. I am also against this rule.

That's stupid. What's wrong with penalties? When you score, there shouldnt be a way for you to lose those points unless the play goes under review and is overturned.
