The Ravens Should Make A Play For Brandon Marshall On Draft Day

24 posts in this topic

I know when you guys read this you are probably going to groan at the thought of going back to another Brandon Marshall discussion, but I want to discuss this matter as it's been on my mind for the past few weeks and Jets making a play for Holmes only heats up my to discuss this.

Broncos want a first round pick for this guy. Cowboys might be willing to give up their first for Gaither or maybe even their second. Lions could also possibly give up their second. 49ers have 2 first round picks (even though reports may have them listed as "not interested" you can't completely count it out) The points is, for those of you worried about the Ravens' limited draft picks, we are in a position where we really don't give up that much for a top 5 NFL-Proven Wide Receiver.

Ok, also for those concerned about money, maybe we could possibly either sign him for 1 or 2 years (to get us over the Superbowl hump) or lock him down with a long term deal that assures we have him for the rest of his career or near the close of it. People go on about "he will demand big money" but he would also want to stay somewhere long term where he feels he is appreciated and has a chance of playing. Having a long term contract would help put him in that mind-set. Also, Ravens are closer to a ring than teams like Seahawks or Denver so that could also play into a deal playing out.

Anyway, for those of you that don't want to discuss this fine, don't reply but if you do please be respectful because this is something I want to discuss to the point where I can actually see a legitimate reason why we shouldn't make a play for a top 5 NFL Wide Receiver because I don't think there is one.

No thank you. We are fine with the recieving corps we have. Believe it or not, we are still a RUN first team...

Who doesn't like another 1000 yard plus reciever but the fact is we don't need him, he doesn't play like a raven(off field) and as you said demands alot money. Second of all no one is gonna give gaither a 1st round pick... the way its looking even a 2nd. Other than that lets imagin all the Touchdowns Marshall, Anquan and Mason would have, i say 25 combined and 8 Tds for the other guys RB's and clayton. Joe would have 33 TD. Thats Payton Manning status right there.

But what happens to the run when we go against a good team deep into the playoffs, though? It usually gets stopped up and that's when we need the passing game. Boldin will definitely open things up for our passing game even more and so will Mason (even though he is not a long term option) but when you have a crazy passing game like the Saints or even Cards, you can really come up when it really matters in those tight games and possibly championships.

What I'm saying is that we don't have to abandon the run, but it won't take us to a championship ring these days. Passing game will. Marshall will really put us over the passing slump we've always been in to the point where we can become a really scary team. Basically, a first round pick for a proven top 5 NFL Wide Receiver.

Our other needs like CB can be addressed in the 2nd and Heap has a few good years left in him so TE can wait. DE, we have Kruger who has made some plays for us but really the only thing we just need is depth. We got Redding for some extra insurance.

You forgot CB. Washington and Webb both out with Knee's. There is a question mark when either will return. Even if both do make it back for training camp, by some miracle, you really can never have enough quality corners.

You make it sound so simple.

After we give up the first, then what? We need to sign him to a huge long-term deal or else we just lost ourselves a 1st round draft pick for nothing (1 year's performance).

We now have money tied up in Boldin and we are looking at signing both Ngata & Gaither to long-term contracts.

We just can't invest all of our money in WRs. Flacco won't be able to stand up long enough to get them the ball.

The Ravens won't go after Marshall, nor should they. His off-the-field issues are well-documented and are on the main reasons I'm sure the organization never made a serious push for him. Secondly, locking him up with a contract would keep him here the rest of his career sounds great but would cost a TON of money. And it really wouldn't be a good investment considering the way he acts.

Also, what sense would it be to try and trade for him now with the WR position looking very good short-term? As fans, we'd love to have 23-25 year old studs at every position but that just doesn't happen. Its sad the team has yet to draft or develop a top WR of their own but the organization has done a great job recently of addressing the position.

Why can't we be satisfied with that for now?

Sounds like you are proposing to trade Gaither as part of this 'play'. I would be very disappointed if the Ravens put their OL in jeopardy for a skill player.

If Ozzie wants Marshall and he's willing to take less money to come here, that's a can't miss acquisition in my opinion, especially if we are toying with the idea of bringing in Dez Bryant. Marshall >>>>> Bryant.

Isn't this the reason why Marshall was punting and spiking balls in the first place? My guess is that Marshall will not be looking to take any sort of "discount".

That was part of it, no doubt, but he also despises McDaniels... I think if he got the chance to play alongside Boldin and D-Mase with a real QB in Flacco (and not Orton or Quinn), I think he would def. be willing to take "less." There are creative ways to get players their big-time money without strapping the team financially, with Ngata and Gaither due for pay days as well. Look at the Colts with Manning, Wayne and Harrison and being able to afford 3 Pro Bowl/future HOF players in their prime.

For the record, though Jared Gaither has not been explicitly included in this discussion, it was revealed today that there had been no trade offers or discussions about trading Gaither with any NFL teams. Therefore, any notions of trading him will likely be laid to rest, even with the slim possibility of a draft-day transaction lingering. (LINK)

Furthermore, Brandon Marshall has signed his one-year restricted tender with the Broncos today after a discussion with head coach Josh McDaniels. Though the tender could preclude a trade in the near-future, it is extremely unlikely that Baltimore will get involved, particularly since the Seattle Seahawks are willing to give up significantly more to Denver in acquiring Marshall. Additionally, the appeal of trading Marshall to an NFC team as opposed to staying in the conference is a factor, as well as the wealth and value of picks that Seattle has to offer compared to any other trade partner. I Hope that some how we can grab Demaryius Thomas in the second round, even if that means Gaither getting traded. If we do get a late first or early second I hope we grab Jermaine Geshem, Demaryius Thomas , and a guy like Mccourty to help the secondary. if not Greshem in the first I hope itll be Odrick.

We look excellent at our offensive skill positions going into the 2010 season. Balance wins more games than anything; now it appears we got the receivers to complement our running attack. (Marshall is not a necessity considering the importance of other players and the cap.)
My case is for drafting a defensive player in the first round of the draft. We need a CB and a DL given what happened in free agency and the injuries to our corner backs to start the season. The thing with defense is that no matter how good our offense becomes with its new additions our opponents will pass all day on us if they have a strong quarterback especially when that weakness is further magnified by a suspect pass rush, and that is what we have.
MY case is for drafting a CB or a DL; however, if Ozzie can somehow get maximum value for Gaither in a trade, Oher can be moved to LT and we can pick up another blue-chip OT early in the draft because of how deep it is at that position.
Let's go men. Pull off another fantastic draft and strengthen our team now because we are making a strong run at the Super Bowl this year because of the age of our superstars. I agree that window for reaching the Super Bowl is open and our front office sees that.

When have a top #1 WR, a top #2 WR, and a mad competition for the slot. We need a long term replacement for the #2 we Mason retires, we just need to develop a young guy. We already have some on the practice squad with potentially. WR is minimal concern.

I think it would have been much more beneficial to the Ravens to go after Marshall INSTEAD of Boldin... but that obviously can't happen now.

And I just can't see the team adding both receivers.

As for the draft... I really have no interest in seeing them take a receiver. I would rather see Justin Harper see if he has improved at all in his consistency. He would make the really tough catches, but drop the wide open passes last preseason. Justin Harper definitely has the height and vertical jump to be a dangerous receiver if he can put it all together. And I don't remember much from the guy, but a lot of others on this board seemed to really like Eron Riley... so I really don't feel like seeing one of the Ravens few draft picks this year being used on a wideout.

Please give me defensive linemen, corners, and linebackers. A kick returner and/or kicker wouldn't be horrible either.

going by all the "sources" he will be a seahawk.
I am not going to lie though, it seems as though the hawks might only have to give up there 2nd rounder (#60 overall) to get him. I would give up our second in a heart beat for Marshall and turn this team into an offensive one.

However this is not madden, newsome is going to sit tight and draft some solid players and i am very happy about that. But come one guys, you seriously would not like to see our offense take the field with Marshall and Boldin lined up next to each other and Ray Rice in the backfield??? I know i would!!!!

Dream over.....

Dream draft...

Odrick - DE
Thomas - WR
Cook - CB
Dickerson - TE

Would go down as one of the best drafts in Ravens History.

dolphins are pretty dumb here. They are rumored to be offering him the most lucrative contract for a wide receiver ever and they are in a city that's essentially a playground for things that will get him suspended. Plus, he has no one to throw to him...

Great receivers make an average QB look great and a great QB make average receivers looks great. Great receivers and a great QB makes for a Superbowl berth.

Miami being a playground... hit the nail on the head.

Now that Marshall to the Ravens is no longer a possibility, please continue discussion of the trade in this thread.

Thanks.
