AFC North In The Coming Hours/Days

62 posts in this topic

I'm going to throw out an trade option that nobody has brought up. It will be Cleveland, and I have a feeling that the NFC Team is the Seahawks. Seahawks are looking to trade Guard Rob Sims(who is entering his 4th year and is 26) who also just signed his tender in order for him to be traded. Looking at the AFC North, the only teams in the North that need offensive line help is the Browns and Steelers. The Steelers may do it... but they aren't ones to make trades and give away draft picks. Cleveland has 13 picks and can part ways with a late round pick. James Walker from ESPN who does the AFC North has predicted in his blogs that with the Seattle connection and Holmgren, Cleveland will trade for Sims and bring him in to help their offensive line. Cleveland's line will be much improved, last year they got a good pick in Alex Mack last year to anchor the offensive line, and they have Joe Thomas at LT, and Eric Steinbach at LG so their left side of the line is solid. The right side needs help and they would probably move Sims to Right Guard to help the right side. Though that won't help Delhomme very much since he'll some time in the pocket to find a defender.

For Troy Smith and Mark Clayton..... well someone may trade for Smith but I'm not sure about Clayton. Here's how I'll break down potential teams for Smith/Clayton

Market For Troy Smith:
- Redskins (maybe.....)
- Vikings (maybe Favre isn't coming back and they will give Smith a shot)
- St. Louis(Insurance for Bradford??)
- Seattle( Matt Hasselback's replacement???)

Market for Clayton:
- Panthers(they need someone opposite of Steve Smith though they may look at the draft)
- Bears(more help for Cutler though it won't matter if Cutler throws to the defense)
- Tampa(they need receiver help)
- 49ers(they need someone in the slot, so maybe they'll try him in the slot)
- Rams( they have no receivers so maybe Bradford to Clayton??)

Market for Gaither:
- Seattle
- Redskins
- Lions
- Arizona

I'm going to go with what I said about Rob Sims heading from Seattle to Cleveland. He was tendered at a very low pick as his tender is worth like 1.1 million something and with 13 picks Cleveland can deal some picks. Here's an article about how Cleveland has a "strong" interest in Sims along with other teams who want him like the Bears and Lions and Eagles.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/2136302,CST-SPT-bearnt02.article

The last time Seattle let a guard go, isn't that when their line started to fall apart? Yeah, how that work for them and now isn't he apart of one of the leagues best lines in Minnesota? Seattle better hope this isn't a repeat all over again.

I like this breakdown, all the teams make sense and could definitely use a good, proven receiver like Clayton. I just don't believe many teams would be willing to give up a 2nd-rounder or even a 3rd-rounder for him.
You could expand this to nearly every team in the NFL. Gaither is a very good OT and could benefit nearly every single team in this league. The Colts, Cowboys, and 49ers have all been rumored to be interested. Personally, I don't think he's going anywhere, I wouldn't want him to go anywhere, he's too good for whatever we would get in return.

Looks like it's between the Browns and Eagles. The article explains more, but basically the Browns would get Sheldon Brown and Chris Gocong for either a draft pick and a player or draft picks and a backup. Here is the link: AFC North Trade

It was so much more fun predicting what it would be, instead of discussing what it is.

I really have no comment on this trade. Gocong I guess would be a decent pickup for a depleted LB core of the Browns.

Yes. A receiver who has 74 games under his belt and averages about 47 catches, 625 yards, and 13.3 ypc throughout his entire career is not too shabby. Those numbers are not mind-boggling nor overly impressive by any means, I never claimed they were; I'm just asserting the opinion that Clayton is a solid, proven NFL player.

The fact of the matter is that Baltimore fans put the burden of high expectations upon him (rightfully so) and his first-rounder draft status. He failed to live up to those expectations but he is still a good (not great) player for us. He has proven he can play in the NFL and produce solid numbers.

That's just how I see it.

This is interesting. I guess they are going to fill the hole left behind by Wimberly when they traded him to Oakland with Gocong. Sheldon Brown would be a decent upgrade next to Eric Wright but I wonder why they just don't take Joe Haden. I'm guessing this means they want a Safety whether it's Eric Berry or Earl Thomas.

Now I just thought of something, if the Eagles are trading Brown, will this tie into the trade with McNabb and getting Nnamdi Asomugha from the Raiders? Just a thought, it will be interesting.

There are really only two guys on the Browns draft board.

1. Eric Berry
2. Joe Haden

Can't really see them taking Earl Thomas that high. Not under Holgrem's watch.

Which means, not Gaither :)

Gocong is the only bright spot in this trade. But he comes with a "?" and it applies to the injury bug. I think the Eagles are getting the better deal here.

I still feel like this isnt the trade being reffered to by Schefter..

Just to confirm it even more...It looks like it will be Browns and Eagles....

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/02/signs-keep-pointing-toward-eagles-browns-trade/

So they sign Scott Fujita, Jake Delhomme, Traded for Seneca Wallace.

They have the following draft picks.....
Round 1: No. 7 overall
Round 2: No. 38 overall
Round 3: No. 71 overall
Round 3: No. 85 overall
Round 3: No. 92 overall
Round 4: No. 105 overall
Round 5: No. 134 overall
Round 5: No. 137 overall
Round 5: No. 146 overall
Round 5: No. 160 overall
Round 6: No. 177 overall
Round 6: No. 186 overall

Even if they do trade for Brown and Gocong... they will have many picks left over, idk, but it seems like the Browns are on the right path to recovery, they of course are a rebuilding team. I wont be surprised to see them be make the playoffs in a year or two.

The writing is on the wall though. The Browns are close to inking the trade. Link It meets all the prerequisites.

1. AFC North team to NFC Team
2. No Big Names
3. Trade will happen within a couple of days.

I think your holding your breath thinking that somebody is going to trade for Troy Smith or Clayton.

I don't think it is either especially that it is reported that Flozell Adams and Ken Hamlin will be released from Dallas. Dallas has shown interest in Gaither, and you think the release of Adams has anything to do with getting Gaither??? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/02/flozell-adams-and-ken-hamline-to-be-released-friday/
Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Cowboys will release the five-time Pro Bowl tackle Friday. Safety Ken Hamlin will also be released, according to Hamlin's Twitter account.

Jerry Jones has plenty of money, but he's making smart cost-cutting moves here. Adams was not worth $7.5 million this season, especially with a good young option like Doug Free on the team.

That trade is now complete, Chris Gocong and Sheldon Brown are now Cleveland Browns. The trade breaks down like this:
The Eagles officially announced they have traded cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong to the Browns for linebacker Alex Hall, a fourth-round pick (No. 105), and a fifth-round pick (No.137) in the 2010 draft. The Browns had 12 picks in this draft, so the move acquires two possible starters at a reasonable cost.
Yeah, trade happened, Brown and Gocong to the Eagles for a back-up LB and a 4th and 5th rounder. Holmgren is really turning over the roster in Cleveland and making some drastic changes. The Browns look to be entirely different this season, whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is left to be seen.

uh...I would consider Sheldon Brown a big name, not a big name like darrelle Revis, but he def. is known.

Well the Cowboys have cut Flozell Adams so you never know about Gaither being traded, especially with Cowboy fans wanting him.

Even though Sheldon Brown isn't exactly a young player, Holmgren was smart in acquiring him. I mean look at all the really good WRs in this division. Boldin, Holmes, Stallworth, Mason, Ochocinco, Ward, Wallace. He'll be asked to cover some of these guys.

Agreed, my G/Fs older brother is a massive Eagles fan and hes been clamoring for an upgrade at OLB for the past couple seasons strictly because Gocong cant stay on the field. He doesnt seem to upset that Gocong is gone. Although I like the Brown pickup for the Browns, hes a tough guy.

The Browns are definitely on the right track. Their secondary is looking formidable, they have stockpiled picks, and have acquired solid (yet unspectacular vets) like Fujita.

If the Browns can draft Eric Berry, he, Brown and Eric Wright could turn their secondary around.

Yeah I hate to say it but the Browns are definitely on the right track, they have made some good trades and stock piled the draft with 10 picks(since they traded away 2 to the Eagles) to help them rebuild and get younger. They have a good mix of veterans and youth on the team. Delhomme is not the QB I would have went after but Jeff Garcia is who I would have took. The trade for Brown now assures them that they can take Eric Berry and not Joe Haden.

Right now Eric Berry should be a dead lock to Cleveland considering how the top of the draft should shake out. If they get Berry their defense will be pretty good. I'm excited for Cleveland personally, I mean sure it was great to see the Bengals be able to compete with us and the Steelers, but give it another year and the AFC North can have 4 good solid teams. I just wonder if the Browns are targeting Colt McCoy in the second to be the future of the Browns.

Nobody is trading for Mark Clayton or Troy Smith. The only real trade bait on our team right now is Jared Gaither.
Agreed. And we need another cornerback, maybe more than we need Gaither. Needless to say, it wouldn't supprise me, if the deal was made.
