Rep System

23 posts in this topic

Same question. The rep system was hijacked by by a few that ruined it for all. I can live with out it but sometimes it is nice to acknowldge your peers, or tell others you agree without posting and jamming up a thread. We didn't turn this forum into "facebook", but I like the rep system for it's positives, not for a way of disrespecting someone you don't agree with. Sorry if it came to this but I support you all in whatever you feel is best, especially the love of our Ravens and good spirited debate!

After many issues and misunderstandings we've been presented with about the system, the Administrators made a move to "remove" the reputation system -- sort of. The functionality is still the same, but there is no longer a "reputation" tied to a member's account.

Instead, Plus signs are a "thumbs-up" while Negative signs are a "thumbs-down" with nothing showing up on anyone's profile. That way, the votes remain independent of the user and are tied only to each individual post. People have misunderstood its intent before, and we Moderators certainly went to bat for you guys as much as we could because we weren't fans of it either. It was meant as a moderation tool for the community but became a social-networking tool instead, and it turned ugly because people took it personally or assumed it had some sort of bearing on their account (it didn't.)

I figure, a thumbs-up/thumbs-down system with NOTHING shown on anyone's profile is a good enough compromise. Hopefully, no one will take it too seriously. Remember, the rep system never had any bearing on anyone's account; the warning system is entirely separate from the old rep system and remains a Moderator-only tool.

Thank you mods! I truly stand behind what you are saying! The systems intent suits me just fine, like I had stated, I prefer to give the "thumbs up" to a good post. Neg reps really started to get out of hand lately, keep up the good work, much respect to you all, and thanks again!

Franny had close to 1000, we have had several posters want their accounts deleted because of the system and I know there are 2 on going threads that have veered off conversation because of the neg reps, its not worth it.

I had a little over 1000, by far the most on the board. If I didn't even want the system in place, I figure that speaks volumes to how much we Mods were collectively against it. Some posters assumed that we had control over it or that we installed it. Definitely not the case. All we do is monitor violations. That's it.

I reached 250 positives...now they are all gone

I feel you! As a "real Ravens fan", I have read many of your posts and even if I did not agree. I would never have "Neg Rep'd" you. I think that we all, me included, got jobbed by the Marshall, Marshall, Marshall, crowd. Many times I saw posts that were really good get "lit up" red by a mob mentality. I can pesonally say I did like to see the number under my profile, just to gauge if I needed to check myself. It's not as much about us, as it is about the few who took the forum and turned it into a B.S debate! You know that we, the real fans intended it to be more than that. Sometimes a few, do spoil the whole bunch, but this is the new realility we have to live in. Give yourself a +1 from me and all my respect! You earned it! See you in the forums, I-70 West!

<--- Guilty of causing hurt feelings

*innocent whistle*

I don't know how I feel about it being gone.... never really cared for it to begin with... and now the rep system has essentially become what YouTube's is now

I think what needs to be understood is ya'll know how happy you are with your positive reps? Well there are twice as many people that were unhappy, we had a group of posters the + each other on everything, and another group that( - )certain posters no matter what they posted, and we had a poster that registered 2 accounts so he could (+) rep each account, and everytime this above stuff happens the mods get PM's or we get request to delete accounts because of the neg reps or it spills over into the threads.
It was a good idea that did not work on this board, people know who the good posters are, its not a contest.

That's pathetic.

What surprises me is people really care about their internet self image.

We have had reports of people's name and reputation showing up in Google searches. Can't swear that it's true, but some people were concerned that it could impact their ability to land/keep a good job.

Oh, yeah.. that would be a good reason; but why would a job go off of forum rep? (not arguing just asking) because I would much rather go off of facebook or myspace where you generally KNOW you have the right person in question

but if it effected people's chances at a job... then it definitely needed to come down

I don't know that it did but there were 2 people who were afraid it might. I have been an at home mom for a while and last time I worked it was not an issue plus I am a nurse and they don't look at stuff like that. I thought heard something on Dateline or something about employers looking at Facebook and My space wanting to know screen names and info like that, so I don't think we were getting BSed. I would hate for some one to miss out on a job because of the serial neg repper or someone being "cute". Posting is supposed to be fun and I think for a good many this was taking the fun out.

No. We still find cases of people just neg repping for the heck of it. At least this limits the damage they can do.

People get their feelings hurt and its like cyber-bullying. They don't just do it among a group, they do it to randomly to everyone especially in the Blogs. I know it sounds off-the - wall but I have gotten the PM's
