Flacco Changing His Throwing Motion

53 posts in this topic

Joe's PA fake may look obvious to you on TV or from the stands but to a DB who is covering and needs to make a split second decision it's plenty good enough.

What Joe can improve on is his passing while on the move. He needs to move more to avoid rushes better; he can improve his passing while moving (like Big Ben?) This aspect is probably more a function of his footwork and shoulder turn than basic throwing mechanics.

Sometimes it kind of seems like Joe's throwing motion has already changed.

I just like the fact that Joe has Jim Zorn to help him out. He hasn't relly had that luxory before. I also think the hip injury played a bigger part in the motion than Joe had let on.

Flacco was "soooo" accurate last year because he was dumping the ball off to Ray Rice all season....

I think Cam wants to take the cuffs off of the kid and let him hurl the rock.

And who else than a baseball coach to teach mechanics. Pitching is ALL muscle memory.....

Isn't it a nice luxury to be discussing our quarterbacks new throwing technique instead of wondering if he will be submitting DNA.

While Rothlisberger is trolling clubs for college coeds, Flacco is working on improving himself as a football player.

Flacco was pretty accurate imo. however, i really disliked how he held that ball alot longer than he should have resulting in sacks etc. now that we have a good WRing core, that should all change!

I think one thing that may not need work but more practice is for Joe to work on getting some zip on his deep ball. Sometimes I feel like they are hanging in the sky too far. He hasn't had many chances to really work on it during the season because our guys almost never beat their guys deep. I just remember that pass to D Will where he had to stand stationary because it wasnt well placed deep. I think Joes deep ball suffered in his sophmore season but that can be worked on

Yea - but if all of the people who would be satisfied with letting Gaither go for a 1st get their wish... Flacco will be eating dirt more than last year. The line is more beneficial to a QBs success than the WRs.

If Gaither stays, we have both the line and WRs for him to succeed.
Nice to hear Flaccos working hard. I don't think he needs much improvement in throwing, its the awareness that I think needs improvement. For someone so big, he doesn't avoid many sacks, and many times has no clue when someones blitzing him.

But all that is the norm for a second year QB, and it is one of the only things wrong in Flaccos game. Hopefully he makes an improvements towards that this season.
I agree with you..i hope he will be able to recognize blitz and get on the line quicker so he has time to look at the defense and is able to figure it out..i love joe..and i think he has what it takes to be an elite qb in the league

Yeah it's good to see Flacco trying to improve this early on in the offseason. It shows some serious dedication. But if there's one specific area he needs to work on, I think it's his PA fake. Am I the only one who thought watching him last year that his PA fake was very predictable? It was easy for me to tell when he was gonna keep the ball and not hand it off because he really didn't stick the ball out very far when he was doing play fake. Another thing I would like to see out of him is that even though he's 6'6 230, I'd like to see a little more quickness when dropping back. Other than that, he's doing really well.

ID have to agree. THis is something I mentioned over and over again last year. Joe play fakes STINK. He just gives a little half-hearted jab in the general vicinity of the RB with both hands firmly on the ball...I really dont think hes deceiving anyone.Especially when those fakes come on 3rd and long.

Exactly. Watch Manning's PA highlights and how bad we bite, then watch Joes, and tell me he doesn't need improvement. But Joe's still young and relatively inexperienced in the NFL, so give him some time to get comfortable, and I think he becomes alot better at everything.

And that's where his injury comes into play. In 08, he was moving around and scrambling a lot more than he was last year. If healthy, I think we'll see him return to the level of mobility he was at his rookie year.

Glad to see Flacco trying to improve on his game ,a few points i think he needs to improve, reading blitzes better, getting to the line intime to be able to see the field. going through his choices in the passing game, getting the ball out faster. And redzone- No interceptions throw it away settle for 3 points instead of an interceptions.

With the modifications on offense It's safe to say his passing accuracy will increase, as well as alot of other stats. The most important being the W catagory.

I hope we don't tinker too much with Flacco's mechanics. Boller's problem (amongst many) is overcoaching.

Otherwise, this goes to show the hard work and dedication to excellence from Flacco. Some work on improving their games while others spend their time raping little girls (Big Ben).

Step and throw, Joe. Step and throw.

Must be a really deep ball, aren't you suppose to plant and throw?

You always step, even if its a tiny directional step and shifting of your weight forward. The point is, you have to 'bang, bang' the step and throw to wing a good ball. It's the sequential unlocking of body parts to maximize speed and accuracy at release... and all that. When it all comes to together, it feels like 'step and throw', but it's feet, knees, hips, torque, motion, shoulder angle, elbow location, finger pressure, etc., etc.

His accuracy on the deep ball did drop from year 1 to year 2, and his over-the-middle throws were basically non-existent. Anything to improve in those two areas is most welcome. I'm ecstatic to see Joe taking his job so seriously and being so coachable/humble.
Yeah, he was over throwing the ball some. If we are to take it to the next level our offense needs to get together durung the off season and work on getting better. Take a page out of P. Manning book and take it to the next level.

Flacco will be like everyone else on the team, expected to improve over the off-season, and it will happen again.
