The Ravens have agreed in principle to a 2-year contract with former Seahawks Defensive Lineman Cory Redding.

"This will sound a little like a broken record, but Cory is a guy who plays like a Raven," said General Manager Ozzie Newsome. "He hustles, he plays with intelligence, and he can play multiple positions like many of our defensive players. He's been a starter at both inside tackle and defensive end. And I am sure our coaches will use him in both positions."

He's definitely been an underachiever since entering the league (and signing a big deal)... let's hope Clarence Brooks and Co. can get the best out of him.

I remember a couple years back that he was one bright spot on a lacklustre Lions team. Then the Seahawks traded Julian Peterson (why?) to the Lions in return for him. He played D-tackle for the Lions and for some strange reason the Seahawks tried to turn the 290lb+ Redding into a 4-3 D-end which didn't really work.

Thats about as much as I can remember on him without actually researching him.

Here are career numbers. http://www.nfl.com/players/coryredding/profile?id=RED327892 Seems to have passrush ability as he had 8 sacks in 2006. Also, he's still young at 29 so not a bad signing. We need some pure DEs on this team anyways. Seems Redding replaces Dwan Edwards. Some could probably argue Redding as an upgrade to Edwards just off the numbers.

Good signing. Like others have said, he was one of the few bright spots on Detroit's D a few years ago.

I'm thinking of how Redding might affect what the Ravens do in the draft too. Could this mean the Ravens draft a CB(Wilson/McCourty) or is Odrick still an option?

This signing doesn't rule anything out.. it's clear Ozzie wants to address our needs through free agency and just go BPA when its our turn to pick. I think we'll probably also add another CB at some point before or after the draft.

I was about to say the same thing ;) To fully utilize the BPA-strategy come draft-time, we need to eliminate all needs, which Ozzie has done time and time again...

You're probably right.

I wonder who the CB will be though if they do decide to sign one. I've checked the FA CB list recently and I wouldn't be comfortable with majority of them even as stop-gaps.

8 Sacks in 2006! This is better depth than Dwan Edwards who provided us with 2 career sacks.

It does take the pressing need of drafting a defensive lineman in the first round away. Drafting a CB just inched a little closer.

I agree. Unless we move Gaither for an additional first rounder or someone really fals to us, I think we trade back to get extra picks and then take Kyle Wilson. I don't think Odrick makes it to us at 25 and we don't have the picks to move up for anyone.

Great job replacing edwards..redding adds depth

I agree that this just means that ozzie is making sure we can pick the BPA..haha and im not denying that kyle wilson may have gotten better in our eyes

I have to agree with some of the above posts about BPA strategy. Build a great foundation, annually fill a few holes with proven guys and then reap the benefits of great draft picks as a bonus. Some of those guys will end up being great (Ray, Ed, Haloti, Jamal, R. Rice, etc) and perpetuate the tradition.

I like this pickup. If Odrick is BPA Ozzie may just take him. If its a CB, WR, C, whatever, he'll take him. No more fretting about which WR we should take in the first round, thank goodness.

Redding's versatility is a real plus.

I can see a DL featuring him and Ngata inside with Pryce and Suggs on the outside or him and Pryce as the DEs with Ngata and one of the young NTs on third and long.

This is a great pickup it adds depth and if you were on alright defenses for your whole career then went to a defense like the ravens with the supporting cast the ravens have how could you not have the best seasons ahead of you. look for Redding to have his best years in Baltimore. Great pickup!

Hopefully he switches back to DT,he was a bad DE with the Seahawks. This adds some good depth behind Ngata and (possibly) Gregg.

If Odrick is available, I still say that's a no-brainer. Even though I think Kruger will be a stud at DE, and I love the added depth with this Redding signing, I still think we should be looking at DE in the 1st round. If Odrick is gone, then trading back would make a ton of sense.

I'd like to add that Redding is more of a pass-rushing inside lineman instead of a run stuffer. He's has had some good production (16 career sacks). Hopefully he'll add to our pass rush, which was sub-par last year. I'm excited to see him on the field.

I expected them to add a guy like Redding after Edwards and Bannan left (I had never even heard of Redding before though). We haven't really improved the line yet but we're drawing even. If we can grab a great D-Line talent in the draft (Odrick, Cody, Thomas, etc...) we'll be a step further in insuring dominant D-Line play for the next couple years. Personally I'd love for Ozzie to get us a true NT to replace Gregg when he retires and I'm PRAYING that Kruger can become a Mathis/Freeney style pass rusher.

I told you something like this was coming soon. But my only concern (not to be too negative) is that he's never been in a 3-4. I suppose we'll make him DE.

Let's just hope Kruger can become a solid pass rusher. Freeney and Mathis are top-tier pass rushers that aren't common.

love this pick up. Redding gives us a guy that will get pressure from the inside in our 4-3 sets next to Ngata. Good depth move aswell because Pryce cant play a whole game. Still wouldnt be surprised if we drafted another DE in the 2nd round or traded back and picked one with the third rounder.

Good pick up by oz. Really does allow him to go BPA
