Ravens Agree to 2-Year Deal With WR Derrick Mason

126 posts in this topic

With this signing I think it opens doors in the draft because if you look at the WR's we have now:

Boldin
Mason
Stallworth
Clayton
Eron Riley
Justin Harper
D. Williams

We may draft one but not so early to rev up competition during training camp but I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens selected a first round CB, DE and then address the TE and WR later on.

This sorta works in favor of the Ravens to have a great draft where Ozzie picks the best player available.

More great news: any receiver that the Ravens draft will have THREE veterans to learn from in Boldin, Mason, and Stallworth. Mason alone would've imparted great knowledge as the elder statesman, but Boldin's Pro Bowl ability is likely to rub off on a young WR, and Stallworth's been around in the league and was a decent route-runner before his career was put on hold.

I could care less what the Ravens do in the draft at this point. There's no more pressing needs to address, only depth to add to key positions. I trust the front office to make good decisions in the draft and I don't even feel the need to acquire any big-name college prospects.

Sorry Fran... I disagree with you. Im praying to see an Ed Reed "ALERT" when i log on to our homepage saying that he is back. And we do need someone to step up behind Todd Heap when he needs rest, and also to learn from his experience. And i kind of feel that we need someone in the likes of Brandon Graham or Everson Griffin to get pressure off of Sizzle because if we resign Edwards, to me he is inconsistent at time and we cant put any of our OLB's there because of depth..

Does anyone hope we sign Kelly back? I think he was great last year. It was ashame we only passed to him once a game for a 3rd down conversion.

Yes!

this season is going to be awesome. Honestly, I still can't believe we have Boldin on our team. I'll believe it when I see it in august.

Which leads me to believe the possibilites are endless with this offense and offseason altogether. I can't wait to attend training camp.

This looks like the makings of a very promising year.

^^^ you forgot marcus smith

Which proves a point, we don't know the full potential of these guys so why draft another WR? However, if someone like Dez fell to us, I would believe the Ravens would grab him up but it all depends on the draft board. If the top corner prospect was there and Dez was there also, I would take a guess that the Ravens would take the CB.

I definitely want K. Wash back. I envisioned the receivers looking like this:

Mason and Washington on the outside, with Boldin in the slot.

If Stallworth proves he's healthy and still has speed, he can be that 4th receiver for those deep balls Joe likes to throw.

But I really think Washington is the 3rd best receiver, and a great red zone and 3rd down target.

And if Justin Harper has added any bulk, and has worked on his hands... would love to see him on the field.

I do. I'd rather see him back than Clayton.

Id like to see Washington back. But atleast we are going into the draft with minimal needs, and can pretty much go with the bpa approach.

This Off-season keeps getting better & better. Last week the Boldin trade, now Mason returns. Thank you Front Office. All I gotta say is trade up with the Texans at 20 and grab Jermaine Gresham before the Bengals or Patriots have a chance to snag him up. I really want the Ravens to get Jermaine Gresham now.... this is awesome!

Yeah we really don't need anymore receivers. We got our young guys in Marcus Smith, Riley, and Demetrius Williams. I haven't seen anything from Smith or Riley, but Demetrius Willaims and Clayton have shown flashes of being something great. As others have mentioned, we have 3 vets for these guys to learn from and can help them play better.

Right now we need to focus on rebuilding our defense for the future and possibly getting a TE. Though does anyone know of any FA TEs now that could come in to block while receiving duties go to Heap?

Right now I would keep our first round pick just to get a good pass rushing DE and then go corner, and then go BPA for the rest of the draft that go with any of our needs (DE, CB, TE.)

I was worried about Ray Rice getting smothered this upcoming season. With Mason being signed, that little man is gonna run FREE!!!

This is exactly what we needed. Now i think we should draft a wr just so we can develop them, but wide receiver is not a need. Now we can go best available and pick players that are going to make an impact instantly. Ozzie is the man. What a great off season so far. Hopefully it can only get better with the draft

We should have a nice receiving corps going into 2010 season though our top 3 receivers, considering Donte is in it, are all in their 30s. Just hope they stay productive and come up in the clutch when we need them to.

Though I have to say, I'm going to miss Kelley Washingston. He really WAS a great target for Flacco, I just hope Donte comes out determined and ready to play some hard nosed Ravens football and uses that speed which will be key for our deep threat. Though with Boldin, Mason, Rice, and Heap, provided Jim Zorn helps to develop Flacco even further, we should be able to tear up the defenses on short/medium passes and march our way to the endzone similar to how the Colts do.

We have the pieces now, it's all on Flacco's shoulders now. We just need everybody healthy and we can be great this year.

Anyway, for the rest of this offseason, we need to try and get Reed back. Other than that, our main goals are done for the FA period. Now we need to build on our already stout defense in the draft.

This makes you think back to the masterful pick up of Stallworth. If he doesn't do so great, at least he can stretch the field and we only pay him $900,000. On the other hand, if he plays with something to prove like I think he will, it will give defenses a lot more to think about. Boldin, Mason and our running game are enough to worry about, throw in a speedy Stallworth making plays and what can they do?

Aside from his injury, people were just stating facts about our receivers, facts that you couldn't ignore. He doesn't need apologists.

Dallas....Here we come :)

Btw is there going to be a press conference for the signing? I'd like to hear Masons thought on finishing his career as a raven and playing beside Boldin.
