Ravens Dave

Purple-hearted Seahawks Fan

10 posts in this topic

In case you didn't see this in Mike Duffy's Big Board Blog today, I wanted to draw your attention to this story that I thought was really cool.

When the Ravens went to Seattle to play the Seahawks, there was one fan that was pulling for the home team while thinking about the purple and black.

Jeff Hansen, a longtime Seahawks supporter, donned Ravens gear to honor the memory of Ravens fan Michael Watts. Hansen, 32, received Watts' heart in a transplant in 2006 after Watts, an Air Force staff sargeant, died in a vehicle accident. Hansen sported a Steve McNair jersey and Ravens hat to raise awareness for organ donation.

Read more about it in this Baltimore Sun article.

There is also a video report from a CBS station in Seattle.

unfortunately, it took a life to save a life. but you know what?....some people who recieve transplants would either contact the family to say "thanks" and that's it or they would just be happy to be alive and not really acknowledge what it took in order for that to happen! it's great to see someone of extreme gratitude like that. i mean, no one knew his story behind wearing the ravens jersey but he did it anyway in a very hostile environment. i am from a city where those wearing the opposing team's jersey may not make it home after the game without a visit to the hospital first! and then on top of the football gesture, to see him starting a fundraiser for the man's family is truly amazing! this is a man who holds the gift of life in his heart!

when i first read that, it moved me inside to know that there are people out there that are more than willing to put their difference's aside and take sides for a good cause.
