Antonio Cromartie Traded to Jets

19 posts in this topic

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter on Twitter, the San Diego Chargers have traded CB Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets for a conditional 2011 third-round pick that could turn into a second-rounder based on performance. (LINK)

Cromartie, a former Pro Bowl selection in 2007, was looking to leave San Diego due to conflicts with the coaching staff. Cromartie had an underwhelming 2009 season in which he dealt with various nagging injuries and was facing demotion due to performance. The Jets may now have the CB they envisioned opposite Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis after their failed experiment with Lito Sheppard.

Additional details forthcoming...

I'll probably get negged again by sensitive people but could care less. Cromartie is going to get absolutely worked next year playing opposite Revis.

I agree. Cromartie will be akin to Samari Rolle; he could have his best season and still be the scapegoat in the secondary just because he gives up ONE big play. There's almost no way Cromartie (or any #2 CB, for that matter) can win in that situation.

Jets won't be good for long it seems..... looks like they're trading all their draft picks away

Well now the speculation about him can stop. I think, if anything, they signed him as a replacement for Lito Sheppard. And as Ed_Reed20 said, with Revis on the other side, Cromartie will be tested continuously. But it helps him to know that their D will keep blitzing under Ryans system, making his job a little easier I guess.

Sometimes it almost seems like a fan's team. "Let's trade away all our picks for this year's sexy draft pick, for this controversial player, for Brandon Marshall..."

Yeah, I question this move because it doesn't matter too much who the 2nd corner next to Revis is, he (in this case, Cromartie) will be the weak link in the chain on that D. A good run D, a great opposite corner, a great pass rush. Makes no difference who's in Cromartie's spot, all NYJ is doing is wasting a pick.

Do you guys not realize this is huge for the jets? Lets just give Rex Ryan all-pro players..yeah, thats not good. Playing corner in Ryan's system is a dream come true for athletic corners(like Cromartie).

But Cromartie fell off significantly since his 2007 Pro Bowl season. He also has a number of distractions off the field, namely the 7 children he has and the various paternity suits their mothers have brought against him. Just like Mark Clayton's divorce with the mother of his children severely affected his mental state after the 2006 season, the same happened to Cromartie. It also didn't help that Cromartie's had nagging injuries.

He was also playing on a San Diego defense that dropped off significantly from 2007. Look, I'm not saying Cromartie is like a Darrelle Revis. I'm saying if he is given the ability to roam around and use his freak athleticism, which the Jets defense will give him(best in NFL), he will thrive.

But, you have to figure, teams will throw more in Cromartie's direction than Revis -- not a good situation to be in if you're a player learning a new system and still dealing with other things that have affected your game. Until he's 100% and has his mind right, he will struggle. And even at 100%, he could still struggle because of the law of averages dictating that he'll have to give up some big plays eventually with the sheer number of passes thrown his way.

Franchise, I'm not trying to argue, but Revis takes away 1/2 of the field by himself. This leaves Safeties and the occasional linebacker to shade and help in Cromartie's direction.

I believe we are the only two who realize how huge this is for the Jets. This is not good for any QB facing the Jets next season, and yes I do understand we play them next year and I'm worried already. Rex's system is very good to where players can become even better. Good Move Rex, and let's not forget, for the person who said they are wasting draft picks, they only gave up a 3rd round pick in 2011, and it could be a second depending on how they do. They didn't have a 3 this year because that went to Cleveland for Braylon Edwards... I'll give Rex props for trading for players but I just wonder if he'll regret not learning from Oz and valuing draft picks.

That could turn out to be a big steal for the Jets considering the caliber of player Cromartie has been and could still be... too bad Ozzie didn't make a play for him.

Cromartie wont be allowed to roam around the field though, he's going to be asked to play more man to man than hes done in his career. Rex's system demands alot of man coverage from his DBs, and some soft shell zones from his LBs. He's obviously an upgrade over Lito, but Ill wonder until I see him play if he'll pull a Deangelo Hall next to Asomugha. Remember Atlanta's defense was ranked in the 20s when Hall was there much like the Raiders were, when he was an All Pro corner.

The Jets are going to have serious cap issues in a year or two...if theres football and a cap again lol.

Ugh. Now all the Jets fans around here are going to be yapping it up about how he's one of the best and now they're going to the SB, etc.

The Jets are takig some big risks. Me personally, I prefer the philosophy that you build your team through the draft unless you already have an almost complete team and you get that last piece of the puzzle in FA or through a trade. But who knows, it might work out for the Jets. I seriously doubt that Cromartie is the last piece to the puzzle in terms of making it to the SB.
