You're not the only one; apparently, this is a MAJOR global outage that is the first of its kind that Sony has ever seen.

Here's one user's theory on what happened:
The going theory is that the PS3 is storing some form of date in GMT, then modifying that to get whatever you see in the on-screen clock. That modification process seems to be fine--the system can take 2/28/2010, 9PM GMT, add four hours, and get 3/1/2010, 1AM random time zone.

What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and **** explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so.

And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)
Another theory is that someone hacked into the PSN or Sony's databases itself; this theory has a bit of steam behind it due to a strange message on one of Sony's pages when displaying an error (could've easily been a programmer who put the message there YEARS AGO with a sense of humor)

Either way, it's not something that'll kill your console, but it causes many offline games to be unplayable due to a trophy-syncing feature that requires certain games to be on the internet even when not signed into PSN. If you have a PS3 Phat (a/k/a original PS3 before the Slim model), your system won't work. Some PS3 Slim users, however, have reported little to no problems.

Rest assured, this does NOT affect your data AT ALL; your data on your hard drive is independent of network issues, and the only way your data would be affected is if it was stored on the servers or if a virus was spread throughout the network. The chances of it being a virus are slim.

And it sucks that Heavy Rain doesn't work without PSN -- I was looking forward to restarting it today after I had a few days to mull over the first ending I got!...

Looks like it is also affecting PS3 owners who have the original "fat" version only, PS3 slim owners seem to have dodged the bullet on this one http://con.st/10002704

In all seriousness, this is about the only time I can honestly say I wish I had an Xbox 360, just so I could play some videogames in my downtime right now.

But the only way I'd get a 360 is if it hits the $200 or $150 price point (which it won't until the next console comes out), or if someone gave it to me.

Other than that, no regrets about the PS3. This is the first time there's ever been a prolonged outage of this nature (let alone any major outage I can remember, with the longest one being a minor maintenance job that took two hours)

Mine isn't having any problems.

Btw, why does Heavy Rain need PSN? Isn't it a one player game?

I hope we haven't forgotten the Red Ring of Death so quickly.

It looks as though everyone should be in the clear over the next hour; apparently, a hypothesized solution actually went into effect where the PS3 was tricked into thinking that it was February 29th at 7pm ET, in which case a switch to March 1st can be made by having the console automatically update the time.

Many people are reporting that they're currently able to play games again.

was able to reconnect and download street fighter 2 hd remix! since it was on sale .
hated the fact I couldn't dive further into Heavy Rain but the slim was too far away from where the kids are (not sure I would have played it in front of them tho)Will be playing Dantes Of War today (Target had it on sale for 40) and have 1 week to finish up Lost Odyssey before the Final Fantasy 13
