Franchise Tags?

9 posts in this topic

Can someone PLEASE explain franchise tags to me? I've read and heard a lot about teams "slapping" franchise tags on players and (apparently) the most shocking is that the Saints didn't franchise Darren Sharper.

I LOVE FOOTBALL with all of my being (meaning: I'm fairly knowlegdeable about it), but this, I must admit, has got me stumped. Can anyone help me?

Definition:
1. A designation given to a player by his team to keep him from leaving via free agency. According to the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, the player must be paid the average salary of the top five players at his position.

We should sticky this haha. Seems like so many posters on this board talk about franchise tags without knowing ANYTHING about them.

@Maryland1: thanks for the clarification. NOW my question is: why won't the Ravens done that for D-Mase? I could have sworn I heard(read) that he was going to be a free agent this off-season. Am I wrong? School me, I need a teacher! lol

If we tag him, his price would be the average of the salary of the top 5 WRs in the league

In other words, it will cost too much

Slapping the franchise tag on Mason would mean paying him the average salary of the top five paid players at WR -- which would be a STEEP price tag for an aging veteran. Mason is good for his age, but not that good.

You're welcome.
