Pit Puts A Franchise Tag On Jeff Reed?!

43 posts in this topic

Someone please explain this one to me. The only franchise tag on a kicker I'd consider is that punter for the Raiders, he's more entertaining than their entire offense. But Jeff Reed, I really don't understand this one. Knowing PIT it's probably a brilliant move. THX.

Well if that's what they want to do alright. Personally I can't see doing it, but then again I ain't gonna question nothing the Steelers do. They don't have a history of making bad moves, and Reed is a proven kicker. They are not that easy to replace, even when you have to. Now Olindo Mare in Seattle? Oh no they did'nt!! They did????? LOL!

Apparently Reed wants a contract similar to Janikowski's. Personal opinion but you better be automatic from inside 45, and able to hit from 55 if you want a 16mil contract with 9 guaranteed as a kicker.

did I read this right...... you mean the same Jeff Reed that lost the steelers the game against Chicago.... you mean the same Jeff Reed who won't attempt a tackle during a KR.....

and he wants HOW MUCH?

Kickers are an important player in this league. We probably would have won 2 more games this year with a better kicker. I'm not saying Jeff Reed is worth it, but they apparently do.

Kickers get Franchised all the time.... don't see how this is a real story lol.

It's just kind of funny that he wants to be paid like a kicker who will possibly end up in the HoF

This is kinda shocking to me as well but you gotta remember, the Franchise Tag would have went to Casey Hampton and they were going to place the transition tag on Reed but they worked out a 3 year $21 Million contract extension with Hampton thus placing the tag on Reed. I'm just surprised they like him that much, I figured maybe they would have let him go and find a new Kicker but I guess they like him more than I thought.

From what I saw ESPN in the AFC North Blog, the Steelers are going to work on an extension for Reed next week so he may not be Franchised for long.

I rofl'd when I first saw this story on NFL.com. Reed should be expecting about 750k a year as a mediocre NFL kicker that doesn't have a big leg and that isn't automatic.

Reed is much better than mediocre. He is darn near automatic. ALL kickers have bad days and he's not had many of them.

Red, you said he didn't want to tackle on a k.o. return? I think he had a brain fart on that play because I've seen him make tackles before.

He wanted Janikowski $$ and instead he gets the avg of the top 5 (?) kickers. Obviously less than Janikowski $$ for the year and they can still negotiate with him. Who is a better AND available option? Cundiff?

My question is more or less how a kicker can get that much money. Good kickers are in the mid to high 80%, and few are good automatically from 50 like Janikowski has the capability. Seems like an aweful lot of money for a kicker.

Consider this: How many times have the Steelers (or the Ravens for that matter) needed 3 points or less at the end of the game in order to win or tie in just the last few years (almost always for us)? Jeff Reed has been about as consistent as anyone in that regard. He's due to make $2.8 mil in 2010. Is that really too much for a guy that puts us in position to win week in and week out? I don't think so. Besides, Kevin Colbert is using the tag to hold on to Reed in order to sign him longer. His failures have been few and far between. I'd put Jeff Reed up against just about any kicker in the league.

2009: 87.1%
Career: 83.3%

As far as good from 50 yards, there is a difference....a BIIIIIG difference between 50 yards in Heinz Field and 50 yards in most other stadiums. Especially, sunny, pleasant Oakland California. Reed has kicked the longest FG in Heinz Field (not Janikoski, not Vanderjagt, not Adam Vinatieri)

BTW - Adam Vinatieri's career avg is: 82.0%
- Sabastian Janikowski's avg is: 78.4%
- (the most accurate kicker in NFL history)Mike Vanderjagt's avg: 86.5%

IMO, Jeff Reed is worth every penny AND the use of the tag.

Well there have been a franchise tag put on Shayne Graham of the Bengals and Michael Koenen of the Falcons, a rarity though to put on K/P!

really because throughout the season I've seen ESPN point out multiple plays where he chose not to try and make a tackle.... it's one thing to miss its another to not try...

I don't give a damn about his tackling ability...... hell idc if he makes it look like he tried...... but if nothing else...... at least freaking try... I understand there can be worse situations... but when your ST is fairly known for giving up KR for TD's in the season..... you need all the help you can get

Probably a good reason that pitt tags the kicker but not surprised by the ridicule, if the Ravens tagged a punter, kicker or long snapper this forum would be swimming in trolls.

Wasn't it Cleveland that tagged their kicker the same year they let Winslow go?
