Brian Westbrook Released By Eagles

19 posts in this topic

Breaking news via Twitter, the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that the Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran All-Pro RB Brian Westbrook.

Further details are forthcoming and will be posted as more information is released.

Westbrook is coming off an injury-plagued season also marred by a series of concussions that left his career in doubt. Westbrook's replacement will likely be LeSean McCoy, though the Eagles will likely be in the market for a veteran as a solid #2 RB. Alternately, the Eagles could also opt to draft a RB to create a young (but inexperienced) 1-2 combination.

I can totally see Darren Sproles going to the Eagles.

You really think the Chargers are going to let Sproles go now that they've dropped LT?!

Not happening.

I can see the Eagles trying to trade for a veteran, but since they're as shrewd with their draft picks as the Ravens are, they may very well opt to sign an unrestricted free agent veteran as the backup to McCoy or the temporary starter, especially since they're not bound by the Final 8 rule.

When healthy he was unstoppable. If Mcgahee somehow was dealt...would you guys like Westbrook to compliment Rice?

No way, we don't need Westbrook. Our running game is great. I say we leave it as it is there is nothing wrong with our running so why bother.

Sproles isn't an every down back and wasn't as explosive as he was in 2008.I doubt they'll be able to work out a long term deal or franchise tag him again.

If McGahee were to be cut, I would want McClain in the backfield complementing Rice and I would want us to seek out a FB. McClain was a force two years ago and with a good FB he could be again. That said, Westbrook is an older version of Rice, so... No.

no way, in the physical ground a pound AFC North Westbrook wouldn't make it. His body can no longer take the punishment. Andy Reid never committed to a run game and he was hurt. Image what would happen at this stage of his career if he landed with a running team? Not good at all. I'd walk away from the game while I can still walk.

The tag number for Sproles will be in the $7M range, and I don't think the Chargers want to pay that kind of a coin for a "change of pace" RB... it's very possible that they do not retain him; I think they need to figure out a way to keep him long-term.

McGahee isn't going anywhere. He is the Ravens' best running back. Not sure what the contract status of Fred Taylor is, but Westbrook would fit perfectly in New England where they pass a lot. He's smart, and can run the screen better than anyone. Playing with that QB and those receivers... that makes more sense than anything.

The Eagles are going to have to be a busy team in the next few weeks. With Westbrook gone, they still have to deal with their QB situation. Rumors are flying left and right but there is no solid indicator of what they will do. McNabb to the Vikes or Vick to the Rams etc...Now the RB positon? This move did make sense for them when you look at the facts, but they definately got some work to do. San Diego looks to be turning into team turmoil. There's more going on with them than they're letting on. If they do move Sproles I won't be surprised, especially after letting Michael Turner go to Atl. Bet they wish they could get a do over on that one.

I agree with Skaught. I would want McClain as the backup if McGahee were to be cut. We don't need a Brian Westbrook-type player in my opinion. Rice has it all, and with better receivers coming in, the receiver roll for Rice should be somewhat lessened.
