Sports Board Games

13 posts in this topic

Over the past few years, I have been playing a few sports simulation board games, and have been enjoying them - when I'm not writing, or in the forums here with all of you.

I was wondering if anyone else here has ever played them,or plays them as of now. I welcome your comments, as I truly appreciate a good conversation.

Board games? What is this, 1994?

Just kidding, I have no idea what specific board games you're talking about.

For example, such as APBA Football or Baseball. Based in Lancaster, PA, the company has been around since 1951.

Also, some of the old Avalon Hill sports board games, such as Paydirt or Bowl Bound.

Finally, there are companies which offer sports board games in this day and age, such as Downey Games and PLAAY.com. You can find them on the 'net - all you have to do is look and you'll find them.

Also, Shawn, your avatar is great! George Carlin still rocks!

I have played and own most APBA games. Baseball is definitely the best. Never got a chance to play the hockey. I haven't played any of them in quite a while, but they are great games.

I used to play the 1972 version of I think it was called NFL Football, with dice and charts for possible offense/defense combinations. I remember Johnny U could throw a 98 yard bomb.

I own the APBA Baseball, and I also own a few cards of their Great Teams of the Past, including the 1966 Orioles.

I also own a pair of seasons, including the 2003 International League, and the 1924 season, which I cherish, mostly due to the fact that Washington won that particular World Series.

I will have to call them soon, to see if the company will still take a money order or check, as my credit is shot and I wish to order again from APBA sometime soon.

Mattel Talking Football (1971).

My cousin and I each got one for Christmas from our grandparents. We would play this game for hours.

When I think of board sports games I remember playing Strat-O -Matic baseball with my dad, I think they made a football version but am not sure. For as crude as it was, for it's time, it really did play pretty realistically and hey fun with you're dad, a brother, a friend, whoever, that just made it even better.

Strat-O-Matic still produces their board games, as well as computer versions of their games, including both baseball and football.

Lately, I've been playing a game called Roller Rumble, which is produced by PLAAY.com, and is based on what I call the "underground legend" of sports - roller derby. It's a pretty good game, and I can come up with my own leagues for the game when given the chance.

Today I have received two miniature trophies in regard to my sports board gaming. I am honored to be awarded such trophies for my sports board gaming exploits.

The trophies are, basically five inches in height and are plated polystyrene.

I don't know what else to say, except that I intend to keep my board gaming going, that is, when I'm not working on my story ideas or conversing with all of you here in the forums.

With this in mind, I urge all of you here to get the games going, my friends.

I used to play one but don't remember the name. They used the CFL and had markers for where the first down was. You would roll the dice, pick an offensive type of play, then would use video to show what you exactly did. It was pretty neat as my brother and I used to play for hours upon hours.

Sorry if my grammar is a little bad right now. I am not the best at describing things.

Earlier today I learned that the APBA game company is moving their organization from the Pennsylvania Dutch country, in Lancaster, to Alpharetta, Georgia.

I don't really think that going from the Northeast to the Atlanta suburbs is meaningful, but I suppose it had to be done.
