That's What Scares Me About Stover

25 posts in this topic

I have the 2000 season DVD and even then Stover could never kick it into the endzone, in 4 playoff games I never saw him do it once. Back then he was money inside 48ish, that 50 yard FG was totally ridiculous by Caldwell, way to know your kicker Caldwell.

Billy's looking alot better now. The Ravens had to go for the leg strenth, too bad Hauska was the original choice. No knock on Matt, I can't beleive Caldwell even tried one from there. It may have had the distance but Stover had to have tried to really "whack" it from there and I think that hurt his accurracy.

He's 1/4 in the regular season from 50 yards.

When he missed it felt so good, probably the favorite part of the post season (besides the win over NE)

That is why we cut Stover, he's useless from beyond 45ish, which is what I, among others, have been saying since Matty was let go.

I think we should have kept Stover this year; we would at least of beat Minnesota. He actually has quite a few 50 + FG in his career. He had 9 in his first 10 years with Baltimore and Cleveland but only has 4 from 2002 to present day. He is getting older and going down hill. I do not think Cundif is our answer either there is a reason Dallas let him go not consistent! The FA has a few pretty good place kickers that is what we need to do is look around and see if we can get one.

There's no guarantee Stover would've made that kick. We as Ravens like to believe he would because of the numerous clutch kicks he made in the past but again, he could've missed it.

I think the chances of Stover making are far greater than Hauschka did, to be honest I have more faith that my cat could make that kick then Hauschka. And as a Ravens fan myself I think we as Ravens were dumb to let him go at least with out a good replacement.

If you have Stover, then you must have a long distance guy with him. I wouldn't mind having both Cundiff and Stover on the roster next season.

Consider this: Who are you going to cut/not bring in to keep that second spot open?

That game was a prime example of the problem with a guy like Stover. Even though I would trust no one in the league more than Mattie from 38 yards and in, my belief is that you need a kicker who can do long field goals to be an elite team.

The Saints kicker nailed three straight from 45-50 yards to keep the momentum for NO when drives stalled. Just imagine the emotional letdown had this kicker missed all three of them.

Not only the emotional letdown, just imagine the negative field position the missed kicks leave the defense in against Peyton Manning?

This is what frightens the hell out of me about Mattie. Great guy. Automatic from 38-in. However, you will never win a highly competitive game which maximizing scoring opportunities and field position determines the winner. The Colts proved that last night.

BTW, did anyone else see Peyton screaming and cursing when Mattie missed that field goal?

For real. I felt bad for cheering his miss for like thirty seconds then I went back to gloating. Still love the guy though.

Yes, I think we all did. The reason he was screaming though was that he wanted to go for it instead of attempting the FG. Manning, like most of us had a feeling that Matt wouldn't make it from that far out.

That's a good observation. I can appreciate that, because the way the camera's cut from one scene and back to Peyton, it looked like he was cursing Mattie.

I'll say this though, we didn't see Stover screaming and cursing when Manning threw the pick.

Chances are you are not going to see anyone screaming at Peyton anywhere in the state of IN. That includes Caldwell too! :landry:

I don't get why people are happy that Matt missed. He was OUR guy for 14 years. How could u be happy when he missed no matter what team he plays for now? I felt bad for Mattie.

I wasn't particularly happy to see Stover miss, but I knew it was coming. When I saw him running in and they said it was a 51 yard attempt, I just kept thinking "WHAT ARE YOU DOING CALDWELL!?" I mean come on, there's no way he was unaware of Stover's low chance of making that kick. He had to know, and just decided to try it anyway. Why not have Vinatieri try that kick instead? Who cares if he hasn't been in a game for a while, he's made two SB winning field goals, and the chance of him making it from 51 yards MUST have been greater than Stover's chance.

I only felt a little bad for Stover, I wanted to see the Colts lose. It would have been nice for Stover to hit both of his attempts, but whatever. Hard not to cheer at the time.

I wouldn't go so far as saying "people are happy that Matt missed." Only one or two people said that.

I think MOST people wanted the Colts to lose, but are not really all that happy that Mattie signed with them anyway, even though they understand the business aspect of feeding one's family.

I think the Stover situation has MOST people "emotionally-twisted in knots."

Can someone tell me when Mattie Stover has made a field goal 50 yards or beyond
[/quote]
Ravens let Stover go for a reason and he proved it in the SB. They showed a stat that said he has not kicked a 50+ yard FG since 06
