Ravens DB Coach Mark Carrier Joins the Jets

I don't blame Rex for wanting a good coaching staff but does he have to pilfer the Ravens' coaching staff every time he has an opening?

That's just like other organizations grabbing our FO personnel: We're just that good.

Well there are two sides to that coin. Is Rex offering others opportunities that isn't being offered by the Ravens? If he is can you really blame them for leaving? Everyone wants a chance to get ahead. Also maybe the relationship isn't great with the new staff compared to what Rex is doing. Ryan is doing what's best for his team and if he has an enviroment that people want to be in then the staff should look in the mirror and see what they can do to keep quality people on staff.

If I can get a promotion I'm going for it. Rex left for the same reasons. He didn't have a chance to head coach with us, he went somewhere else in order to get where he needed to be.

Good points. However, Carrier will be coaching their d-line so I'm not sure how much better of a job it is. His goal is probably to become a DC but I don't see how we wouldn't have got consideration for that here.

Like you said though, there could be working relationship issues.

Well, I don't care about Carrier leaving for Rex, but it just shows we have good coaching staffs and every1 wants a piece of us.

Not everyone wants to work for a team with passion and devotion. Most of them want money and promotions, just common sense. However, I totally respect those who are working for the love of game and passion with the team, not for promotion and better paid. Everyone wants to strive to be the best and some want opportunities to move up to the tops, but in the end, loyalty and passion are priceless for any team in the league.

PS: Ravens are great homes for all players and coaching staffs to settle in.

This one might not hurt as much as losing any other position coach, mainly because the secondary will still (presumably) have the veteran tutelage of both Ed Reed and Samari Rolle, and the unit can only get better after how maligned they were during the first half of last season. Knowledge of the scheme is handled primarily by the defensive coordinator, whereas position coaches stress fundamentals. Fundamentals were a huge part of the problem with the secondary during that rough stretch, and if someone else can be brought in to stress those fundamentals more effectively, I'm all for it.

I've heard several people on the radio who are in the know say that he's done and is simply waiting for the right time to announce it.

I agree with everything else you said though. Hopefully the new DB coach can get Fox and whoever the corners are to work on their backpedal technique and not bail immediately when the ball is snapped.

Why is everyone blaming Rex? Im pretty sure he didnt put a gun to Carrier's head and tell him to go to New York. Same with Leonhard, Douglas, Scott and Pettine. They obviously like Rex's coaching style and rather play/coach for him than Harbs or Mattison.

It's a business. Harbs tried doing the same thing grabbing ex eagles players like LJ Smith and we were after Hank Baskett for a while.

That isn't true with Scott or Leonard. Both wanted to get paid and that wasn't going to happen here.

I'm starting to get really annoyed with the Jets. I mean who knows who else will be leaving us for them?

Now, THIS IS TOTAL SPECULATION, but the Jets may end up with Dawan Landry and/or Justin Bannan next season if we don't resign them. I'm pulling this out of my ******, but it could happen considering they're both gonna be FAs.

Just ask the Browns how well that usually works out. ;)

He probably is. The Ravens don't seem to be eager to promote coaches that were here under Billick while Rex is kind of doing the opposite.

J-Leo was loyal to Rex because Ryan was the one who believed in him when no one else did.

What he said.

While Rex's penchant for placing his bird-flipping hand in our cookie jar is slightly disturbing, I'm not broken-hearted that a new person will be emphasizing basics for the Ravens secondary.

Seems like he's working towards being a Defensive Coordinator, can't blame him for doing what he thinks is best to achieve his career goals. If Rex was willing to give him that chance, then good luck to Mark Carrier.

Coaches move around all the time, our LB coach was the D.C. in N.E.. Our coach was what, the special teams and DB's coach and now he is the H.C. right.

The Jets may be a real problem for us next year.

http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2009/10/14/ryan-raves-about-jim-leonhard/

Former Bills safety Jim Leonhard was a guy Jets head coach Rex Ryan had his eye on for a long time.

Ryan actually wanted to sign him out of college after he went undrafted, but Buffalo obviously landed him. But when Leonhard was out there and available after Buffalo released him in 2008, Ryan, then Baltimore’s defensive coordinator did a lot to get him on his roster.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/21/sports/football/21safety.html
“We [Scott and Leonhard] both had a pretty good idea we were going to follow Rex wherever he went,” Leonhard said.

Hey, we're the Ravens. We were good before him we'll be good after him! That's just what we do! Good luck to him on his new job, but Franchise nailed it! With Ed and Samari around I don't make much of this move, and like he said those guys got flak all year long. Whoever we bring in has alot to work with and you know alot of them want to be a part of an organazation like ours! No problem! Darn it, we lost the backup secondary coach who helped spearhead a horrendous defensive backfield.

Rex is stealing all of our talent!

LOL! But to be fair, three players in the secondary went down with season-ending injuries, a certain safety we all know missed two key games and the pass-rush was inconsistent all year long.

The better question is, if Mark Carrier is heading to New York to be groomed to eventually take a defensive coordinator position, what happens to current Jets D-coordinator Mike Pettine?

Pettine is Rex's boy and all, but who says that Rex isn't grooming Carrier to replace Pettine in the future? Better yet, what if Carrier went to New York with the intent (or pretense) of specifically becoming the Jets defensive coordinator under Rex Ryan?

Could create an interesting situation, especially if Pettine isn't interested in taking a demotion back to LB coach in New York.

Sounds like controversy. XD I hope it doesn't distract them all during a certain game next year. :P

Im sad we lost Carrier and really think he is one of the best DB coaches in the league and it wont be very long till hes a DC..but i think its another proud moment for the ravens as a franchise.
However I am dissappointed as i was hoping in a couple of years he was gonna be the Ravens DC but with Pees and Mattison now here i think he didnt feel the same. The Jets got another great coach on their staff.

I gotta give respect to Rex, he has made that team confident and has one of the best coaching staffs in the league, very similar to us.

I can't say that I'm glad of Rex taking our personnel, but there is one positive. The more Rex annoys us Ravens fans, the less people are gonna come on here making threads about how we should've made him our HC. I haven't seen one in quite a while. Nice. I guess most of us are glad Rex is gone. Good, I think it's finally time to move on and forget about him.

Rex is just caught up in all that New York media mania. I always love watching the draft. No matter who they draft (some real winners over the years) they boo the pick. Sanchez got cheered and it ruined my fun, but you can't have everthing. Let Rex be Rex, he's gone, we got better things to do, with typical Raven class!
