It's a good thing that fans don't run the team.

1. he took a pay cut to stay here...

2. I watched him sack Kyle Orton the first play from scrimmage when the Broncos came to M&T

No JJ is a Raven through and through...he stays

:plus-un2:

That right there is one of the reasons why I want him to stay, he has come up big for us in the past and set the tone for our defense in our better games. He has earned the right to stay with us.

do yall think its time to replace him. i mean hes in his prime but hes not a great pass rusher. personally i think we could replace him with a more perennial pass rusher. what do yall think.
No way! Have you noticed how much of a contribution he gives our team???? He's so underrated it's ashamed. Have a discussion like this when the player we have doesn't perform. His production alone has exceeded what's been expected of him. He was much healthier and more productive that T-Sizzle was this year. I guess you want to get rid of him to?

I still like the idea of JJ as a DE in our 3-4 Defense. He would only need to put on 15-20 pounds. Then we could have Kruger and Suggs out at the same time and sub in Barnes and McClain on occasion.

J.J. lost weight to become a OLB. Why would he re-gain that weight to become a 3-4 DE?

It'd made more sense for Kruger to gain weight.

I agree they should rotate Barnes and McClain in more. At the very least, both provide pass-rushing skills off the edge.

I think this argument is made because if you're not Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, or another perennial pro-bowler than you are thought of as expendable. Maybe in order to make room for someone like Brandon Marshall or Vincent Jackson. Jarret Johnson might not be a fan favorite (yet), but he's a locker room favorite already. He earned respect of the coaches and players after he was deemed too small to play DT and lost nearly 40 pounds to play linebacker. He's a reliable team-first guy who plays through injuries and has not missed a game since 2003 (his rookie year), playing in the past 97 regular season games. This season, JJ played through a torn labrum that he recently had surgery on to repair, a separated shoulder, and assorted knee and back injuries.

I do NOT want to lose a guy now when he was knocking on the door to the Pro-Bowl with 70 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 2 interceptions (A career best performance!).

He put up some good numbers this past season, all things considered. J.J. seems to fly under the radar because he's not flashy or fancy, just good technique, solid play, and that quality you gotta love in a player. The man is a gamer.

Frankly the thought has crossed my mind everytime someone says we're looking at DE or LB as a possible first round pick to jump start our pass rush. Lets face it, if we invest that sort of pick into that position he will be starting eventually. The defensive line in the future will probably be Ngata, maybe Dwan Edwards if we resign him, and Kruger. Suggs isn't going anywhere after signing that big contract, so long term the guy who any pass rusher we draft would be replacing would be JJ. His rookie year would probably be similar to Sugg's where he is not a starter but a situational guy. After that, I don't know what JJ's contract situation is so we might just let him walk.

That's the smartest thing I've heard in this thread, and its true. I love JJ as much as the next guy, but the economics of the situation demand that it will be he, and not Suggs, that gets replaced, if anyone. JJ was the superior player by far last year, but that's the way it goes. Suggs is our third down pass rusher right now, and I don't really see that changing unless he continues to play poorly. Where we need to jumpstart the pass rush is on the actual defensive line. Ngata is the only guy capable of winning a one on one matchup, and he didn't even do it that often. We need to pick up a 3-4 DE in the draft that can get after the passer, ala Jared Odrick or Alex Carrington. Then, on third down, have Ngata play the nose, draft pick play one DE spot, Pryce (God willing) at the other, and Suggs with his hand on the ground. That sounds like a pretty fierce front four to me.

You made it sound like the team should replace J.J. yesterday. Had you said they need to find someone long-term, people wouldn't have jumped all over you.

Jarret Johnson is just one of those guys that won't even get the credit he is due. He is like Kelly Gregg in that he is not flashy but gets the job done.

He is just way consistent.

Imo, JJ is the definition of a Raven. Hard nosed, never complains, plays hard....He just exudes the qualities of a football player

Keep him

I like JJ is a great compliment to Suggs and Ray at OLB.

In 18 games this season he had 7 sacks, 7 qb hits, 11 qb pressures, and more importantly ONLY missed 6 tackles all season.

I agree with rotating the young LBers a little bit but JJ is a keeper.

I will say this though; JJ and Suggs were 2 of the least efficient pass rushers on the team.

Suggs: 461 pass rush attempts, 5.5 sacks, 5 qb hits, 21 qb pressures
Johnson:373 pass rush attempts, 7 sacks, 7 qb hits, 11 qb pressures

Now look at how efficient Barnes was: 100 pass rush attempts, 3 sacks, 1 qb hit, 7 qb pressures.

Maybe just rotate Barnes a little here and there for pass rushing purposes. Hopefully Kruger can step up as well. too

In all honesty, I don't think this situation is serious enough to merit any pick before the 3rd round. Barnes showed a motor at the end of the year that should have earned a spot on 3rd downs, and otherwise, we should hold up well until next Offseason. Besides, it's obvious we are in dire need of a WR and we should also consider a CB in the first 2 rounds, considering that Washington may not return and Webb could be inactive for the beginning of the 2011 Season if on the PUP list.

But what you have to remember is that Barnes was a 3rd down specialist, so he didn't have to contend with play action, quicker passes or (as much) fatigue.
