Favorite Guitar Players

67 posts in this topic

Kind of like Demon's thread of favorite bands, who are your favorite guitar players? Feel free to list reasons why you like them!

Here's my list in no particular order:

Eddie Van Halen - Is there a reason to say why he's awesome?
Randy Rhodes - First to combine classical guitar with metal (that I know of)
Richie Blackmore - My fav guitar solo is from "Sweet Child in Time"
Steve Howe - classically trained
KK Downing / Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest)
Dave Murray / Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden)
Kirk Hammett
Dave Mustaine
Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains)
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden)
Rik Emmett (Triumph)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Eric Clapton
Angus Young
George Lynch (Dokken)
Michael Wilton / Chris DeGarmo (Queensryche)
Micheal Schenker
Tony Rambola (Godsmack)

I'm sure I've missed dozens of awesome guitar players. Please add to the list!

Hmmm. In no order at all:

Zakk Wylde
Dimebag Darrell
Dave Mustaine
Adam Dutkiewicz/Joel Stroetzel
Alexi Laiho
Michael Amott/Christopher Amott
Randy Rhodes
Mike Spreitzer
Slash
Kurt Cobain
Kirk Hammett
Mikael Ã…kerfeldt
Dan Donegan (He's shown amazing progress in his style, technique, and general skill over the years)

I refuse to list Angus Young. Mostly due to the fact that I have a deep seated disdain for anything AC/DC. Maybe if they didn't play the same chords nearly every song with the only difference being the order they came in, I'd feel the need to list him. That and got rid of his god awful duck walk.

Well, thank you Mr. Sourpuss! :P
Their rhythms are pretty basic, and a lot do sound the same, but the man can shred on lead. If ya get a chance, try to listen to some of his solos, such as in Squealer or Problem Child. And that goofy walk and his "head banging" are how he keeps in time with the music.

I completely agree with you about Angus Young. He is probably one of the most overrated guitarists of all time. He is the main reason I refuse to play a Gibson SG or any guitar that resembles one lol

Here is my list

Mark Tremonti-Probably one of the most underrated guitarists out there. He is amazing

James Hetfield-He's a rhythm player but the stuff he does while he is singing is ungodly. He's the reason i bought a Pre-Lawsuit ESP Explorer

Zakk Wylde

Randy Rhodes

Kirk Hammett

Marty Friedman

Paige Hamilton from Helmet- Again not technically a great guitarist, but his band Helmet was playing NU Metal almost a decade before it became popular

EVH

Tom Morello

Steve Vai

Stevie Ray Vaughn

Mato Nanji from the band Indigenous-If you dig great blues music, definitely check them out! They are native american and they rule, Mato Nanji is the guitarist/vocalist he plays and sounds so much like Stevie Ray Vaughn that you will get chills.

Almost forgot Carlos Santana

Oh man, how could I have forgotten Tom Morello? I have yet to see anyone be as creative on the guitar as that man. Creative, yet without sacrificing any skill.

Morello is amazing. I wasn't a fan of Audioslave, but what he did with Rage was legendary. I have tried to pull off some of the tricks that he does, and some of it is nearly impossible yet he does it so effortlessly

Yeah, Audioslave was garbage. Rage was amazing, however, and I attribute alot of that to Tom (and Zach, after seeing Audioslave try to cover "Killing In The Name Of" and hearing Chris Cornell butcher it). Some of his ideas on altering how his guitar sounded just come off as crazy, with no way of working. But man... did they ever.

Friedman's work with Megadeth was awesome, did you ever hear the band Cacophony he used to be in? That was some sick guitar work! Ever hear Racer X with Paul Gilbert? Amazing guitar work too.

It still angers me that he's not in Megadeth anymore which is why their music is garbage now. You can only change lineups so many times before it starts to not work anymore. I wish they could go back to Mustaine/Friedman/Ellefson/Menza...that would be amazing.

I totally forgot to mention Paul Gilbert in with my favorites, the lead guitarist in my band actually got me listening to him he is the man!

Yea, that was Megadeth's best lineup. I saw a video of theirs about 2 years ago, the song was so bad I had to turn it off. You're right, they've become garbage.

Gilbert is amazing. Ever hear Chris Impelliteri(sp)? yikes, that guy is unreal.

How could I have forgotten one of my all time faves???????

George Lynch!

Ya don't have to like his music, but on the guitar the dude is a bit of a phenom!

Not the greatest of his stuff, but...

Longest guitar solo ever! I think George Lynch was better than Yngwie Malmsteen, plus Dave Murray and Adrian Smith's melody on the background is pretty cool:

I heard somewhere that he actually never played anyone else's material. He picked up the guitar the first time and started doing "his own thing". If that's true, it's certainly unique.
