I like the pick-up. Though Belichick was undoubtedly the architect of the defense (and the whole team) in New England, Pees' defensive units had the four best years of any Patriots defensive squad in the past decade, with only the two more recent Super Bowl-winning squads coming close. Pees was the Pats' defensive coordinator from 2006 through this past season, and it's hard to say whether some of their success on the side of the ball didn't have anything to do with Pees somewhat.

For Pees to turn down a coordinator job in Denver (with a defense that played well this past season) to take a job as an assistant in Baltimore, that not only speaks to the higher aspirations he has (working as an assistant in Baltimore usually results in better coaching jobs elsewhere), but a desire to coach a very moldable group of young 'backers.

I'm excited to see what he can do with Dannell Ellerbe as well as Tavares Gooden and Jameel McClain.

This sounds...amazing. No offense to Vic, but I really don't think they were using or coaching Gooden very well. Considering how fast this kid is, and the time he spent with Ray in the offseason, I was really disappointed with his performance this year. All that speed, wasted...flashes of him chasing down Peterson from sideline to sideline still remain firmly in my memories.

This a surprise. I thought the offensive lineman's coach would be the first one to be replaced.

Don't you think it's odd that he would take a demotion? I guess the Raven's defense is just that good. :D

Tell him to bring Adalius back with him! Get 3/4 of organized chaos back! Someone to pressure on the opposite side of Suggs. Woo hoo!
As much as I would like to see AD back...hes not the same AD that left I dont know if its the way Belichick used him or what but hes not the same guy he was in 06. Plus Ray and him had some words when AD left.

As for Pees Im kinda excited about the prospect of him coming here, I mean you can never have too many good football minds working together.

Get rid of John Matsko?? Are you crazzy??!! This guy is a certified genius/miracle worker! Please do not confuse this as a personal opinion, it is a fact.

Have you ever heard of the "Greatest show on turf" of the St. Louis Rams? That was his diesel offensive line that was the backbone of that poweful offense. Kurt Warner's 4,353 passing yards and 41 TDs and Marshall Faulk's 2,529 total yards and 12 TDs in their Super Bowl run. Followed by a year where the Rams recorded a franchise record of 540 points and led the league with 442.2 yards per game. In 2004 St. Louis's O-Line had 9 different starters due to injuries and they still reached the post-season.

Then Matsko fueled KC's offense where their O-line helped their rushing attack to be ranked 5th in the AFC with 133.9 rushing yards per game. Helped RB Larry Johnson set a franchise record with 1,789 rushing yards and earn himself a Pro-Bowl.

Last season the Ravens rushing attack was ranked 4th in the NFL sending FB Le'Ron McClain to his 1st Pro-Bowl. 2,376 total rushing yards averaging 148.5 ypg and 20 TDs and gave up only 33 sacks, 2nd fewest in team history.

This season we were 5th in the NFL getting 2,200 total rushing yards averaging 4.7 ypc 137.5 ypg and 22 rushing TDs and giving up only 36 sacks, 3rd fewest in team history with a rookie RT, a new center, and a RG coming off of what was thought to be a career ending knee injury. Our 2nd year RB Ray Rice put up 2,041 total yards averaged 5.3 ypc 8 TDs, and earned his 1st Pro-Bowl along with Ben Grubb's (C Matt Birk got 1st alternate honors, RT Oher runner up for Rookie of the Year). Joe Flacco became only the 3rd Raven QB to break 3,000 yards and the 2nd QB to throw more than 20 TDs. RB Willis McGahee gets career high 14 total TDs. Ravens set Franchise Record in Total Points (391)!

John Matsko helped to develop 7 time Pro Bowler LT Orlando Pace.

As well as:
G Adam Timmerman was a 2 time Pro Bowler.
G Will Shields earned his 12th Pro Bowl appearance.
G Brian Waters earned 3rd Pro Bowl appearance.
G Ben Grubbs earned his 1st Pr-Bowl appearnace.
T Michael Oher got recognised for rookie of the year.

I like this hire, given that he was invaluable in his assistance in constructing a pretty darn good defense with the championship Pats teams. I think he will do wonders with Ellerbe, and make us all forget about Bart who?

Calm down.

That's all fine and well, but all the same, I'm still surprised that a defensive coach is being replaced before an offensive coach. The offense is clearly the weaker unit so I expected more changes to come from than side.

For what it's worth, NFL.com has our offensive line rated 20th in the league.

John Matsko is not being replaced. He is the biggest reason we have done well on OL. And he is responsible for lighting a fire under Gaither's ****** and for developing Chris Chester into a decent guard where before Chester was walking the plank.

Dean Pees (chuckle) is replacing Vic Fangio who was more a Billick guy anyways. I think that is a major upgrade as Pees has helped develop the LBs in NE. I am not a big Fangio fan.

I like Matsko but our O-line was clearly not as good this year as last year. I don't know if it was playcalling or what but Joe was getting killed back there at times this year. Odd since Oher should have made them even better. The good news is they are young so they will only get better and Matsko will stick around to see them through it most likely.

May be off topic but what offensive coaches might be in line to leave?

The QB coach thing is a little different. Hue wants to move on to bigger and better things (theoretically). This sounds like the current coach is being let go of.

I see an offensive line that has to have it's hand held every step of the way, but maybe that's just me...

What is so attractive about what NE's linebackers have done? I'd like to think that our lbs were already better.

Pees was the Pats' LB coach from '04 to '05 when Teddy Bruschie, Willie McGinest, Mike Vrabel, Rosevelt Colvin, Tully Banta-Cain were making plays.

I agree the Ravens have produced LBs that were just as impressive during that time but Pees has a good track record.

I've been reading some Patriots forums and some fans there are also confused as to why we would take him. They seemed to envy how the Ravens LBers were a lot more aggressive than theirs were, especially because of our last game with them.

And apparently Pees has a more passive/conservative style in his coaching approach, which also doesn't fit the mold. I'll stick with what I said earlier though, our young linebackers were not doing well...at all (except Ellerbe, and maybe Barnes).

I hate being in the dark, and this move has me thinking I need night vision; I just don't get it.

As many people have pointed out, all our LBs except for Lewis and Johnson had down years this year and in many cases were invisible on the field. Something needed to be done, and Pees has experience, even if he is passive Lewis doesnt let guys play passive so that Pees will have to change.
