New Movies?

29 posts in this topic

okay, so i don't see anywhere to discuss new movies that are out, or movies in general.

i just wanted to knw if anyone had seen legion?

that was one h'll of a movie and kept me on edge the entire time. great acting and awesome storyline,, until i got home and found out it was a biblical portrayal as a horror film. either way, as a muslim, it was pretty entertaining.

We could just change it to a general movies thread, because the past year hasn't been exactly a great year for movies. Just an idea. Anyway I'll give you my favorites:

Comedies:
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
The Hangover
Step Brothers
I Love You,Man
The first two American Pie movies (kind of disappointed that they took the franchies in the national lampoons direction)
Also, anything with Ben Stiller is good for atleast a few chuckles.

Horror:
The Devils Rejects
American Psycho (even though it is technically a dark comedy)
Night of the Living Dead (the original)
Friday the 13th parts 5-10 were the best IMO
Paranormal Activity. In a horror sense it sucked but I thought it was pretty entertaining although not scary.
Also, the first few M.Shamalan movies were classics although stuff he has put out recently has been wanting.

Drama:
Saving Private Ryan
Band of Brothers HBO series (i very highly recommend it)
Rules of Engagement
Miracle (probably one of the best sports movies ever)

My girls and I are planning to see "Legion" sometime next week, after the crowds die down some. The other movie we want to see is "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus". My youngest is a Depp fan so we'll also be seeing "Alice in Wonderland". The remake of "Clash of the Titans" rounds out our movie plans.

As for what we've seen recently, "Sherlock Holmes" wasn't bad.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around "The Rock" as the tooth fairy? I love his movies, somehow I could see this being a good laugh.

that's odd, seeing as me and my girl went at 6, and there were MAYBE 20 people in the theatre.

Haha a couple years ago, me and few others went to the movies and saw a movie called How She Move and we were literally the only people there.

I'm in Bowie. The theater here is crowded every weekend. Even if that actual movie isn't, I am not dealing with the parking lot.

Damn straight. ;)

Finally saw District 9 after waiting so long and I can't believe I didn't see it sooner! Really powerful stuff. Definitely not something you should make the mistake of watching while eating (I did...ugh), but it was a great movie with lots of visuals that just don't leave your head. It works well as a drama, a thriller, and a sci-fi movie all at once, though in different doses at different times. The climax was extremely well-done. One of my favorite films of 2009 -- that I saw in 2010.

Yeah District 9 is not a snacking movie. I made the mistake of eating (or rather trying) tortellini while watching. Ugh.

Good movie, though. Very surprising.

All the father-son scenes with Christopher Johnson and his son were very touching, especially the one at the end when they're trying to escape. Also, the scene where his son is innocently asking if they can go home and Christopher was pointing to the pamphlet of the concentration camps and trying to tell him how they can't go home-home was moving, too. I was able to completely look past them being aliens in those scenes and see them as people and it was very well-done.

The book of eli looks awesome but i havent seen it yet???Any thoughts on it if any of you seen it?
My friends have told me that it's OK but doesn't really live up to the hype. The plot twists were decent (they went ahead and told me what happened), but it's nothing worth seeing in theaters. I'd wait for DVD.

idk I kind of liked it.... it really isn't exactly what it was hyped up to be

I didn't get bored watching it, but really wasn't on the edge of my seat/holding my breath either

I know Avatar isn't too new, but that movie was by far the best movie i've ever seen. It's got all the components to it. Best movie.

I've been debating seeing Legion and The Book of Eli. Probably going to see one of them next week... most likely Legion, just because I'm partial to Dennis Quaid. Eli will probably wait until it's on DVD.

I'll agree to everything stated regarding District 9. That movie was so completely well done, seamless blend of action, drama, suspense, and sci-fi. I'd also totally agree with the statement regarding the scenes between Christopher and his son, it all seemed so innocent and genuine. The only thing that bothered me about the movie... I can't imagine aliens having names such as Christopher, haha.

Agreed. My oldest and I both felt Christopher was the most "human" character in the movie. The final scene with Wikus making metal flowers was poignant as well.

Demon - actually the naming part made sense. Typical human behaviour - something different, make it conform.

I am aware of that, I never said it did not make sense. The whole movie was peppered with social commentary, therefore it was easy to see the reasoning behind naming an alien species with human names. Regardless, it was odd to me, and it bothered me.

I almost wanna say that the blood color was intentional and deliberate on the filmmakers' part, but then again, I read somewhere (I think on Rotten Tomatoes) that they merely lucked out with the shooting location since they were filming in the middle of active civil unrest and that those shacks are real homes on-location, and that they originally intended to film in a different, safer portion of South Africa but opted to go the more dangerous route for artistic reasons. They were just fortunate not to be hurt.

So maybe the blood wasn't so intentional? Or maybe it was really an allegory for how the aliens are just as "human" as us since they bleed the same. I'd prefer that explanation over mere coincidence.

Soooo.....the angels in the movie didn't give away the "biblical" part????? :sherlock:

....as an aside.....District 9 is even better if you are married to a South African and understand their language (Afrikaans). There are so many hidden dialogue gems that were cracking us up throughout the movie.

I actually never really paid attention to much to their blood color. Although I'd tend to agree, I don't know what color I'd make it if I were in control of it.

I would have picked a different color personally. The aliens look like bugs so I probably would have used green (I know, how creative of me ;) ).

But Franny has a good point. It did register more as an injury than just fluid and it certainly got my attention.

I can tell you first hand, if those were not real shacks, they look exactly the same as those that millions in that country live in. There are places you can go where as far as the eye can see are rolling hills covered in shacks like that. Its depressing.

Another interesting fact, the title "District 9" is very familiar to South Africans as there was a ghetto called District 6 (upside down 9) in Jo-Burg where the residents were forcibly removed during Apartheid. I actually did my high school final term paper on the atrocities of apartheid and then ended up marrying a South African 11 years later!
