Merged: Ed Reed's Possible Retirement

83 posts in this topic

As a fan I guess I'd hate to see this. But if its in the best interest of his health and family so be it. His family needs a healthy Ed Reed a lot more than we do and he will most assuredly be remebered as the best safety to play the game...and he wore Raven Purple to boot!
I will cry like a little girl and lock myself in my room for months. Is there any way Eric Berry's stock could dramatically drop so we could take him?
I sure hate to say this, but the Ravens pass defense actually played a lot better when Ed Reed was out on injury. Prior to that Ed was gambling on every pass over the middle and leaving the corners on an island too much.

I know Ed is All Everything, but his constant gambling for th ebig play cost us dearly early on in the season. When he came back, he played within a much more diciplined scheme.

Although I wouldn't want to lose Ed, I was deeply encouraged by what we looked like when he was out. You know, when the safety was helping the corners with over the top protection.

I guess all those haters out there who love watching Tommy Z not get beat deep and not MAKE a play will love it.
Zibby played well. By no means is he a better safety than ER, but after all, who is?
I would, really who did we beat in all actuality? The chiefs?raiders?browns twice? steelers without their star QB, DE, and SS?the bears? the lions? the broncos? and finally a chargers team that is always slow in the beginning of the season?

In reality this team is VERY mediocre. Lets be honest we are a team that overachieved the first year with a rookie QB and HC and then performed like an average team the year after.
handing the patriots a loss for the first time in the playoffs at home in over 30 years is extremely mediocre. wait a minute.......

I really have to agree. It hurts to agree on this as well. Zbikowski looked beastly and very aware when he was getting his playing time in Reeds abscence. I have to say if this was Ed Reeds last game, He showed us what he could do best! Pick the ball off!

If Mr.Reed does retire it would make our secondary look like the Lions.
Oh come on Simba. As said in other posts, Zibby played well when Reed wasn't around. Don't forget too that 'Ruki will come off IR sometime (hopefully sooner than later). Might look at another safety for depth purposes but I think we'll be ok....although no one can replace Ed Reed, that's for sure. And probably no one would want to try.

Ed, I understand you need to do what's best for you and the family but the reality hurts. Hopefully you'll give us one more season.

Reed almost retired after last season and he's been very vocal about his injuries- but after the Colts game I expect him to return. He doesn't want his career to end like this.

Reading some of these post are pretty funny. we have a lot of things to take care of before we are even close to an elite team.

1) all these ppl talking about flacco struggling need to watch film, yea his hip is botherin him, but if our recievers would catch some passes it would help his confidence alot, especially the passes that are dead on.

2) A wr is well needed, we knew this comming into the season and attempted to sign a FA that would solve the problem, there was a lot of bignames out there but we did nothing. maybe this years draft....

3) i dont know what our scouts were thinking signing walker and foxworth, what film did they watch on these guys, bc every game they are getting beat like they stole something. If we dont adress this year it will get ugly.

4) Ed retiring. Look how good he was last year when he came back healthy, he had like 9ints in 6 games or some crazy stat. You can easily see he has not been healthy at all, and if he stays in this injured status i hope he retires, he doesnt need to do anymore damage to his body.

5) penalties...seriously, holy crap, i have never seen a team self destruct like we do. We lost the first bengals game bc of this, on their last drive to beat us, our penalites accounted for 60% of their yards. we had two scoring drives called back because of penalties tonight...enough said

So many more things but this is getting long, really need to make better roster decisions, one that really makes me mad is letting stover go...how many games came down to fg's? although cundiff might turn out awesome, but dont fix whats not broke. in april look for us to take a wr and a cb...hopefully. Mattison needs to change up his play calling a little, the D looks way to vanilla and not exotic like it used to be. Tonights game was embarassing, we played with no heart and looked like we were just happy to be there. Ray ray has got to be frustrated to get this close and let it slip through again....i could go on....

I think he just may retire. I hope not but his neck is not getting any better. Love you and everything you have done for and as a Baltimore Raven.Ed Reed is perhaps the best FS ever to play the game.

Best Damn Safety ever and only 8 years playing? Come on Ed, I really want you and Mason to get that damn ring! You can slap Ozzie in the face for not having a competent offense on the field. THis team in pure **** without Reed man. We Really Need him. He is our Best player.

Why do people keep saying that we played so much better without Reed? We played the Packers (gave up 27), Steelers (23 points to a team that lost to the Browns and Raiders), Lions and Bears. Are two games against bottom feeders really that convincing?

i'm not saying we were elite. but we WERE one of the final eight. to say we were medicore is just silly.
I have said it for years now....the Ravens are the best mediocre team in the league. They MAY make the playoffs season to season, and MAY completely fall apart. That's what average teams do. Elite, and even good teams will win often year in and year out. The Ravens are not there...period.

As for Reed, I kind of saw it coming. He is the best safety ever, but I am really sick of his fumbles.

He's been saying this for the last couple of seasons, so I'm not surprised. I am hoping for another couple of years, though.

A WR, fewer penalties, more consistency, an abilty to beat elite teams, but other than that...
Thats falls mostly on the coaches. Question who plays a hurt QB that stares down receivers under pressure? And again no willis are you kidding me?

I hope some time and some off-season moves change Ed's mind. Really nice guy who plays the game so well. Injuries do stack up, however. I think this off-season has to be one wherein the powers that be make some dramatic moves/improvements.

Too much emotion after losing. Not to mention a statement like that would definately deflect alot of heat from ANOTHER one of his fumbles. He's one of the best to ever play the game but he's also one of the most selfish as well. He will be back, probably a way out of training camp for next year as well.

They better start shopping for a new offensive co-ordinator, Cam is too stubborn and wont change his ways. As for the secondary? I would seriously try and get Mcallister back. Sure he hasnt played for a while, but time heals a body and he hasnt forgot how to play.

Im not worried about Reed, like you said.. he'll get hungry and be back. He loves the game to much to quit playing. It killed him when he was on the sidelines this season! I'd honestly be more worried about Heap right now.
Heap's back has been killing him for two years now. I would say Heap would be more likely to retire then Reed. But Reed is also in bad physical condition. Hopefully during the offseason he can rest up and feel better. And I think Ray will convince him to come back.

I love Reed's predatory instinct when the ball is in the air but that doesn't negate that his behavior after an interception that would get any receiver or back booted out at training camp. By talking about retirement the most disastrous, negligent and careless run by Reed is pushed aside.

I think Ed will come back with ample time to heal up. He hasn't lost anything and he was just forced to step back in way too early and it getting to him for now.

Also the fumble made Reed look at horrible pattern that plagues his game. This is the first time his disrespect for the ball's security and six point greed cut deep enough that he'll bleed enough and learn from it.

IMO-Reed will be back next year without a doubt.

Well you can't blame they guy. He puts his body on the line, and his offense puts up 3 points.

I wouldn't even mind if he even demands a trade. He needs to go to a team where he can win a ring. He deserves it.

Honestly, I don't know if I'd be able to handle Reed retiring...not to be a baby or something...We'd be witnessing the best playmaker on defense go down because God didn't bless him with good health. Truly a shame. I hope you give it one more year Ed, I still believe we can getcha that ring.

I feel a lot of this has to do with his emotions, I mean saying this right after a devastating loss where he knows if he doesn't cough up the ball they have a shot at winning. He will be back next year as he still has the fire. He needs a championship.

People have to understand, alot of Reed fumbling and bad decision making at times comes from desperate acts due to the offense failure to produce anything so it causes Ed to try to do too much. I cant believe threads like these are even made when the D played solid all game long, there should be plenty of threads made criticizing the O,the D did there job very well against arguably the best Qb ever in the history of the game.

Ya I stated this in another thread, but the fact that Ray, Suggs, and Ed have been here since the Boller era and know that to win big games and playoff games that the DEFENSE has to score points is disgusting. For a couple years I can understand that, but for friggen 10 years?!? That just makes me heated.

I don't think him fumbling hurt us. He was trying to do the offenses job, because they decided to take the day off.

Even if he didn't fumble the ball, I think we all know, the offense wouldn't put up anymore than 3 points.

Same people who jumped on D. Will's jock strap over making a big play against the Bears, no doubt.

Just wanted to say that I"m a huge Ravens fan and I would be so sad to lose my favorite player, Ed Reed. he is an inspiration with his natural instinct, his superior athletic skills and his strength to play through the pain. We love you Ed!

I don't think it could be overestimated just what Ed Reed means to this team. But if he wants or needs to retire, that's his call ... we'll be the worse off for it, but next man up, boys.
