Offseason Wish List

We need help at receiver, pass rush, left tackle and secondary.

Brandon Marshall may be a nice fit. I don't see a future with Mark Clayton or Demetrius Williams.

Uhh Gaither played poorly because of a poor ankle. When he was healthy, he shut down Freeney in the first matchup.

1.WR
2.TE
3.1 Gap DT
4. Nickle CB
5. OL depth

I would like to be able to keep Rice and McGahee, not sure of his contract status. I believe they compliment each other well. Willis may not want to stay, but it would be a nice dual rb threat if he does.

I think our need at WR should be addressed before they deal with defensive backs. Webb will return at some point next season, as will Ruki and Fabian Washington. Unless their returns get onto a longer schedule, I think our secondary will be ok.

And I'll be really happy for the return of Ayanbadejo...good for both the LB corps AND ST.

Let's see....

1. WR, if Eron Riley makes the team next year, in which he has a good chance too I would love to see what he can do, I personally think he is our gem. Hope they keep Kelly Washington, we need some stability in our recieving core. Mason.... well it's really going to be a tough one, just like the Ed Reed retirement thread makes me a little upset, the thought of Mason retiring is just unbareable considering our WR situation, but ultimately it's up to Mason but I would like to see him here at least 1 more year.

2. Secondary, this will be a big need especially if Reed retires, Webb should come back good and the way he played, he should start opposite of Foxworth. We need corner depth like crazy, I do not want to be going into a playoff game next year thin at corner 3 years in a row. I think Reed comes back for at least a year or two, but the Ravens will draft his replacement this year considering he is 50-50 right now.

3. Defensive line: I think age is catching up to guys like Pryce and Gregg. We will need their replacement soon. If you ask me, I would like see Ngata moved in the middle of our 3-4 defense to take over for Gregg. I really like some guys in the draft this year who could be Pryce's replacement, Greg Hardy comes to mind.

4. Tight End. Heap is not going to be around much longer, in fact I barely notice him since Cam don't use him in the passing game as much. Hopefully Ozzie finds a TE in the draft who can replace Heap and help the passing game, would like to see Aaron Hernandez be drafted by us but I'm not sure if he will considering our WR and Secondary needs.

5. Depth at positions please. I don't want to be thin in the secondary 3 years in a row and we need offensive line depth.

Personnel aren't the problem at least not completely. It is our coaching staffs inability to discipline the team. There should not be ten flags a game and that be alright week in and out. It is one thing to say you are going to take care of it and another to do it. I really expect this team to be in better shape penalty wise for next season.

1. An offensive playmaker. I am not picky. It doesnt have to be a wr, I'll take a TE or RB. Just someone other than Ray Rice that the defense has to really work to contain.

2. Pass rusher. It blows my mind that we didnt see Kruger, Barnes or McClain tonight.

3. I want Fabian and Webb back, I'll even accept CC and Foxworth back but I want DB's to replace Ivy and Walker. Enough is enough. They suck, lets move on.

4. Ed Reed, if he returns, to train with the RB's, so he can learn to secure a football. I wouldnt mind seeing Rice take a few more courses in that either.

5. John Harbaugh to stop kidding himself and kill this loyalty he has to some of these players. If a guy isnt playing well, PULL HIM. I cant understand for the life of me why, Gaither wasnt pulled in favor of Oher at LT, when it was clear that Gaither was struggling. If you dont trust Cousins, move Yanda to RT and put Chester in at RG. Maybe that lineup doesnt work but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results (ie. watching Gaither get schooled by Freeney and hoping it gets better)

Is Reggie Bush a free agent? A backfield with him and Rice at the same time sounds decent.

I know this probably won't happen with Willis's contract and with his ability to find the endzone in redzone.

We could defininately use K. Wash back. Id love to bring back D-Will. We should lock Ngata and Gaither down for a looong time. Eron Riley and Justin Harper will have their chances to show what they can do for our WR corp. If Ed Reed isnt back i wish his the best because we were blessed to have someone of his caliber play for us, there arent too many Ed Reed's in this world and hopefully Haruki and Zbi learned as much as they could from the man because he is a legend. I want Suggs to go to training camp and work his head off... I want Ray Lewis and Ellerbe to spend as much time together because it looks like Ellerbe is our next man up.

In all honesty, I didn't think Frank Walker had been playing that badly as of late. And dare I say it, actually kind of well? Maybe he has finally turned it around.

[E] Ivy, though, sucks. We cut him for a reason. Why/how was he even back on this team...?

Here's my wishlist:

1) A FA receiver in the draft. I'm not talking about Marshall, Boldin or even Bryant. I want a guy like Kevin Walter or Lance Moore who won't cost much money and could come in make plays the way Kelley Washington did this year.

2) A good draft. I know this sounds vague but I simply want to see the team address the key holes. WR, CB, TE DE, ILB, OT(depth), and even S(if Ed retires) are all positions with serious long-term question marks. The best player available strategy has worked in the past but this is a year when the Ravens need to go into every round aware of what holes need to be filled.

3) Ed Reed coming back. As one of my favorite players on the team, I really hope Ed returns. Despite his injuries, he still remains arguably the best safety in the league.

4) Derrick Mason coming back. I don't see many receivers in the draft that could come in and contribute from day one. It would be beautiful if the Mason returned, the Ravens signed a solid #2 option to play beside him and the rookie receiver rotated with Kelley Washington in the slot.

We need a number 1 receiver... no if ands or buts especially if Mason returns, he is not a number one and if he can play as the second option he will be much more effective, and also Demetrius Williams would be a fine number 3 if we used him more often you really cant judge some one on one or two pass attempts down field every 3 weeks.

If we keep McGahee, our running game is fine.

We need a tight end to take over for heap eventually, maybe even sooner than we think with the continuous injuries.

Offensive line is fine maybe just add a little more skilled depth.

Defensive line needs one more dominant body to go along with Ngata or a skilled pass rusher.

We need another linebacker with high upside because Big Ray is not gonna play forever.

Our secondary is another thing depending on how Washington and Webb recover from their injuries we should add another capable corner just in case of a repeat injury. Whether Ed Reed comes back or not we need a backup with high upside. Ed has been a crucial part of our pass defense since emerged as a star, so a replacement is a must. Landry is still young so he is fine.

The last thing has to be our return game if Jalen Parmale can get better than fine, but we need a punt returner also.

Comments or other Suggestions?

How exciting would it be if the Ravens could pull some strings this off season, via, the draft, trades, and possibly free agency (depending on how the elite-8 rule pans out) to build an explosive, play making, CONSISTENT offense to compliment our defense. I'm thinking like the Vikings, Cowboys, etc.... They all have explosive offenses and good defenses. If we can get some major game-changing weapons, and add some quality depth to our defense (pass rushers, Cornerbacks, etc..)

So I present my off-season wish list with my top 3 positions that I feel we need to address.

1. Wide Receiver: They have been avoiding this for way too long and it is time to get our franchise quarterback someone to throw to other than the check down to Ray Rice every play. Plus there is a strong chance that D-Mase retires. I hope they get at least 2 receivers this off season.

2. Cornerback/Safety: I feel if we can sure up our secondary with some quality depth, we will be a much better defense and won't give away games like we did this season. With Webb, Foxworth, Fabian, and a physical acquisition will help our team immensely.

3. Pass Rusher: A no brainer here. It's plain and simple. We get a guy who consistently creates pressure on opposing quarterbacks, then our cornerbacks get better. I would gladly take a guy who's main skill is rushing the quarterback.

Thoughts?

#1 WR
#2 D-line
#3 TE
#4 O-line

#1 could be addressed through free agency, Miles Austin, Steve Breaston, Vincent Jackson to name a few.

#2 could be addressed through the draft, Jay Ross East Car, Brandon Deaderick Ala

#3 Draft Hernandez FLA

#4 Draft Chris Degeare WF

Just my opinion.

#3 Draft Hernandez FLA
Breaston is definitely a possibility. Early Doucet has emerged as a solid option and if Boldin stays, I could see the Cards letting Breaston walk.

Hernandez was a productive player at Florida but I don't think he has the size to be a top TE in the league. To me, the Ravens need someone like Anthony McCoy of USC or Ed Dickson of Oregon.

2) 2 new receivers & Mason, Washington back

I completely agree. We've seen how much of an impact a top-flight receiver has on an offense (see V Jackson, R Moss, A Johnson). Same thing with a top-flight CB (Revis, Asomugha, Bailey). And same with pass rushers (Allen, Ware, Dumervil). The teams remaining in the playoffs right now have these positions solidified and it shows. The Ravens will not get to the next level until they get a player to fill each of these positions.

1. WR, please ozzi we have been waiting for over 10 years, will u bless this team and fanbase with a true big no.1 wide reciever. the thing is tho there is no good quality recievers who can make a huge impact for our team. this draft is very week at WR.

2. DE, huge need. we will never succeed in the playoffs if we dont get one. peyton just proved that to us last night. he had all day long. ( there is some good DE's coming out. the best one who stands out the most is definetely jason pierre-paul, if u havent seen him. then i suggest every1 go watch some game tape of this boy. been following him since he started at south florida.

3. TE. yup, i think we really need a versatile TE, who can catch on the run, and has some flashes like GATES. theres one coming out of the draft and that boy is named Jermaine Gresham.

4. for all those who say we need a CB. can i just say this, i understand it was shaky in the beginning of the season for sure, due to players not being comfortable with mattisons scheme, and him being a 1st year coordinator. well things look alot different in the past 10 weeks of ravens secondary. they came together and things have been clicking.. foxworth doing alot better, btw i thinks he gonna be a good shutdown corner in a year or 2. INDY GAME WAS BS, no pass rush at all. remember we have WEBB returning & WASHINGTON as our nickel who i believe is the best nickel corner in the league. then u have carr, cary williams who will see alot next year and walker. i have always said walker steps up big time in crucial games such as playoffs. but theres always that chance were we can get a steal in 3rd or 4th rounder for a corner than do it.. always have depth but i dont think its a big need for our team so MY 4TH WOULD BE another wide reciever. we need more than just 1 reciever to help flacco out and progess. i think flacco is having the same problems just as eli manning tho his reciever corps is better than ours but not much of an upgrade.

5. LEFT TACKLE, and heres why.. jared gaither is asking for alot of money and big contract.. i dont see the ravens giving it to him, remember hes a RFA. so i think we will slap the tender on him and other teams will draw attention. maybe a 2nd and 3rd. or 2nd and 4th. thats all i can see us giving away. to me gaither looks like he doesnt give 100% even when he is at full health.. i remember maryland coach talking about his work ethics and how he doesnt put 100% into his game. we can always improve in the draft on this and we normally always get a good pickup.

SO LETS ALL JUST SEE WHAT GOES DOWN THIS OFFSEASON, im already looking forward to it. THANKS ALOT ravens for giving us a hell of a season. and dont worry fans we will be back for revenge.
dude ur wrong on the top flight corner backs. except for revis, asomugha and bailey are not top flight. btw we have 3 good corners on this team, last year washington showed he was a top shutdown corner going vertical against every reciever.. foxworth took some time this year and webb came along. remember 1st year coordinator where our players took some time to get comfortable with him.. secondary looked very DIFFERENT OVER THE PAST 10 WEEKS. btw, foxworth has shutdown more recievers with less yards than asomugha and bailey.. and thats with us not even having A PASS RUSH.. LMAO. so yea could u really imagine our team with a solid pass rusher to compliment suggs thats if that ****** can get his ****** into shape and with barnes.. yea we would do alot better. that way we wouldnt have to give a qb 6-10 seconds to throw a damn ball. so our secondary will be fine only if we get a SOLID PASS RUSHER. and thats Jason Pierre-paul. beast written all over him!!! so lets not sit here and beat up our corners when they have actually stepped up big time including our depth. ( carr, walker).. like i said before.. foxworth has really turned his game around, and he shows that he can be a shutdown corner. at least he has worked on alot of mistakes that he did earlier in the season.

he played well against wayne first game, driver, marshall, bowe, randy moss both games, edwards, ochocinco 2nd game---shut him down all 2nd half, berrian, calvin johnson, destroyed the bears recievers lol.. so yea he did pretty damn good and he will get better... i see alot from him cuz he works hard. never gives up and has alot of confidence in himself.. next year i think our secondary will be deadly. if im wrong, then u can all bash me about it.. but im calling it now. top 3 secondary for next season. and foxworth starts mid season on becoming the shutdown corner.

Ok i'm gonna play GM here for a minute. Keep in mind that these are just my opinions.
Offensive Needs:

O-line : The Ravens need to decide if Gaither is really the answer at LT. I would move Oher to LT and see what happens with Gaither at RT. Also, Adam Terry should be coming back next year to help with depth. The Goal line package really missed him this year.Grubbs and Yanda are excellent at LG and RG, but I think the team has to start thinking about who is going to take Birk's spot as he is old. IMO the Ravens missed Jason Brown A LOT this year in the run game.

WR: We all know that the Ravens have a huge need at WR. They have to go into this offseason with the mindset that Mason will retire, and either sign or draft an impact player. I think Williams is gone, and I wouldn't doubt if Clayton was gone too. Hopefully, we will see some improvement from Justin Harper and Eron Riley in the pre-season. It seemed to me that Harper was the better receiver of the two, though Riley's TD against Atlanta was impressive.

TE: The Ravens need a PASS BLOCKING TE, so Heap can get involved with the offense. Also, signing LJ Smith was obviously a mistake.

RB: I don't know what the deal is with Mcgahee's contract, but I think this year he proved that he is a team player, and that he can still get into the endzone. If they decide to cut him though it will be interesting to see what Parmele can bring to the table.

FB: I wouldn't mind seeing the Ravens carry another FB so they can utilize Mcclain more.

QB: Let Troy Smith go, he is obviously not happy here being a backup QB and for the sake of %99 percent of the fanse as they will be releived of the constant "troy didn't get a fair chance" headache. John Beck has a big arm, and is good enough to come into a game and hand the ball off.

Defensive Needs:

Dline: I thought the play of Kelly Gregg improved as the season progressed, nothing needs to be said about Ngata, and Bannan, Talevou (however you spell it) and Mckinney provide good depth.

Pass Rusher: I'm listing this seperate from the D-line and LB's category because I don't care if it's a Defensive End or a DE/LB hybrid player but the Ravens NEED somebody that can get to the QB and take double teams off of Suggs.

LB's: I think they are fine at LB for the upcoming season, though finding a replacement for Ray should be somewhere in there mindset frome here on out. Ellerbe showed alot of promise late in the year, JJ was outstanding, Ray was as usual.

CB: Ok here is where a lot of debate is going on. I think Webb and Foxworth are your starting CB's next season, while Washington is the Nickel. I was actually pleased with how Carr stepped up late in the year both at CB and at Punt Returner so He stays for depth. I will puke if I see Ive in a Ravens uniform ever again, and Walker has to prove somehow that he can be consistantly reliable if he wants to keep a spot.

Safety: If Reed decides to retire, I think the team will be fine with Zibby taking his spot while Landry continued to get closer to his old form as the season progressed.

Special Teams:

I was pleased with the play of David Tyree, we will be getting Brendon back so our coverage teams should be exceptional next year.

KR: Webb will be back, but I think Parmele will keep the job.

PR: Carr didn't have many chances to return punts this year due to all of the good punters we faced, but he was solid for the most part.

K: Here is another huge question. Cundiff was head and shoulders better than Haushka, but do the Ravens keep looking for better options? I say they should keep seeking a better option, but if nothing is there I think Cundiff is GOOD ENOUGH to get us through another season.

Alright, here goes nothing.

The Ravens finished 9-7 this year, yet still managing to make the playoffs. After dismantling New England in the Wildcard round, Baltimore AGAIN fell to the Indianapolis Professional Football Team. Last offseason, many people said we were "one player/step from being in the Super Bowl," etc. I think this was very misleading. The team got hot and ran the ball effectively, but the team still had many holes, and it showed this year

Offense

The O-line was pretty solid this year, but there are still lingering questions about the future of this group. Oher, Grubbs, and Yanda are all young guys who we should see protecting Joe for many years. Matt Birk is aging, and many wonder how many years he has left in him. Chris Chester has the ability to play center, but I doubt his power and toughness (I do, however, love him as a goal-line tight end). This may or may not be addressed THIS offseason, but it is still an issue in the near future. At left tackle, Gaither has played well most of the time, but injuries have been an issue. He missed a few games with a head injury, and nearly missed the playoff game vs. Indy because of a knee injury. That being said, he's been a soid LT option. The problem is that he's set to be a FA and will likely demand a huge contract that the Ravens may not be willing to oblige. Both center and left tackle are positions the Ravens could possibly add to in the 2010 Offseason.

After somewhat abandoning the run early on, the Ravens returned to form with a powerful, dynamic run game, featuring Ray Rice and Willis McGahee. Rice will be back, following his Pro Bowl year, but McGahee's future is not so clear. He could be traded, released, or resigned. Parmele has proven a servicable backup, but McGahee's nose for paydirt in the RZ was invaluable this year. RB shouldn't be an issue in 2010.

Now for the receivers. Ohhhhh boy, here we go again... Arguably the biggest need for the Ravens this offseason. Mason, Clayton, and Washington are all FAs. There will undoubtedly be an overhaul of this group; the only question is who will be brought in. I really believe either Brandon Marshall or Anquan Boldin will be a Raven next year. I also fully expect Ozzie to draft a receiver in the first two rounds of the draft. A combination of Marshall/Benn, Marshall/Tate, Boldin/Benn, or Boldin/Tate has got to be a dream come true for Ravens fans. If this happens, expect Joe Flacco to really emerge and show how good he is when given some weapons to work with.

Defense

The Balimore defense was criticized often by fans, despite a #3 ranking in the NFL.

The defensive line should again be solid with Ngata, Edwards, Suggs, and (assuming Pryce is gone) Kruger. I think Kruger will develop a little bit and improve the pash rush, but depth at DE/OLB (pass rush) is needed. A guy like Brandon Graham (aka LaMarr Woodley 2.0) or Jerry Hughes could be brought in via draft to improve this aspect of the defense A lack of pass rush really killed the Ravens against elite quarterbacks, namely Manning in the playoffs.

We have a ton of depth at linebacker. Ray will be the heart and soul until he hangs 'em up, and he is irreplacable, but wee do have solid guys to step in when he's done. Ellerbe has been a pleasant surprise and has stepped up into the starting lineup, and a healthy Gooden should contribute as well. JJ had a fantastic year, and Suggs played wel late in the seaon. Barnes and McClain will need to help with the pass rush, but expect a top run D again in 2010.

The secondary in the offseason will be less of an issue than people think in the offseason. Walker and Carr shouldn't see the field too much next year, as long as Webb is fully healthy come August. Foxworth's play really improved late in the seasson, so him and Webb should be solid at the corners in 2010. Reed is contemplating retirement, but his decision shouldn't impact the Ravens offseason moves too much, with Zbikowski in like to take over when Ed leaves. Landry is solid at SS. Baltimore could potentially draft a CB in the 2nd or 3rd round in the draft for depth, but the secondary should be decent in 2010.

Please let me know what you think.

agreed with most but I'd rather see Oher play LT and have us draft a RT and let him compete with Cousins, and maybe Terry(?) But I wouldn't draft another LT for sure, Oher is solid there.

edit: IF we are ever going to let Gaither go
