Lane Kiffin to Leave Tennessee to Take Vacant USC Job

25 posts in this topic

Per ESPN, Lane Kiffin will reportedly leave the Tennesee Volunteers after only one season to take the USC Trojans head coaching job vacated by Pete Carroll. Kiffin will also bring along his father, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, among others. Carroll left USC earlier this week after accepting the Seattle Seahawks' offer to become their new head coach, marking his return to the NFL in the midst of controversies surrounding USC's football program.

Kiffin, meanwhile, returns to the West Coast after being ousted from the Oakland Raiders.

I guess this goes to show how much loyalty Lane Kiffin really has...real classy guy, huh? <_<

There goes the USC program in the dust and wind.

But if anything happens with the Bush and McKnight stuff, Kiffin will be the one to take the fall. Carroll baling to Seattle ensures that...

Not necessarily. Carroll can still face fines if the NCAA finds him guilty of impropriety in regards to the Reggie Bush scandal. Additionally, the NFL can also intervene and punish Carroll if it's found that he only left USC to try to escape punishment; it would fall under the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Ah good. Very good. I am glad he might not be able to weasel his way out of that stuff.

This is all ironic, considering that Lane Kiffin justified his shady recruiting tactics by saying that it was all necessary to compete with the USCs of the world. Now he'll get his wish and actually be at the helm of USC, also taking control of all their recruits and resources.

Carroll could also be officially stripped of his wins and championships if the NCAA so chose. The only sanction he's escaping is a reduction in scholarships -- that's USC's problem, instead.

It blows my mind how some of these college coaches operate. What ever happened to integrity and commitment? Yeah, yeah, business, shmusiness. When you are in the position to help shape young men, you have an obligation to set a good example.

This why I love Joe Pa,he's stayed with the Nittany Lions the last 40+ years through the good and the bad, without bailing out.

Also being reported former OC Norm Chow might be heading to USC also.
Wow, Norm Chow returning to USC? That blows my mind almost as much as Chow coaching former Texas Longhorn Vince Young at the NFL level when they were together in Tennessee.

I figured Chow would make another NFL run, given the current climate of coaching changes and how desperate owners are to fill these vacancies with new blood.

Why does this guy always seem to find a good job one after another?
I get the feeling that he's one of those guys who's just really persuasive, almost like a snake-charmer. Theoretically, you can get anywhere in the world with the right amount of enthusiasm and conviction.

Problem is, I have a hard time believing that he's fooled all these high-profile employers into taking a chance on him. Sure, his only real success has been at USC to begin with, where he began his career as an assistant coach. But bottom line, it's hard for me to accept that USC would bring him in as the head coach and expect to be immediately successful. Not after all he's done in Oakland and Tennesee.

I'm no fan of Paterno or the Lions, but I do have a world of respect for his committment to their program.

It's sad to say, but Al Davis may have been right about Lane Kiffin after all. That excessive display that he put on in explaining his termination of Kiffin may have been called for, in hindsight. Kiffin really did turn out to be a liar and Davis was right in saying that Kiffin would bring disgrace to Tennessee the way he did to the Raiders.

So, Lane Kiffin may have been a bit shady for Tennessee, but at the same time, I have to think he was a bit too arrogant for the Southeastern Conference.

Certainly too arrogant for the Big Orange faithful, in my opinion.

Kiffin doesn't want to have to recruit against Saban, Meyer (who is still very involved at Florida) and other SEC Coaches who clearly have more credibility than himself. Going back to USC is a great move on his part, it will be interesting to see how the Trojans do this upcoming season.

I'm calling it. Matt Barkley to Seattle in a few years.

I thought the same thing about Louisville's Brian Brohm heading to Atlanta when Bobby Petrino was still coaching the Falcons, but...well, we all know what happened there.

Well Brian Brohm is terrible. Good thing the Ravens didn't skip Flacco and went after Brohm in the second round, or we would be screwed.
