Who he does songs with has no bearing on how he is as an artist himself. If you didn't know, Wayne does songs with EVERYONE but it still doesn't change the fact he is an extremely inconsistent artist. Lil Wayne can have his moments, but his inconsistency and the stuff he says when he's "cold" outweighs any moments he has. It's not a matter of whether you're deep or anything. I'm talking about pure skill as an artist. As far as pure skill, Lil Wayne is not top 20. imo

fair enuf i respect ur opinion, but its just funny to me that the guy u think has little skill and is inconsistent, is consistently doing songs with ur top ten who i assume u think r far superior.

but to me thats the beauty of rap, its has so many different faces but is really combined into one form called "hip hop" me personally i cant stand kanye west, i think hes trash, but he is very different from say an eminem or jay z, but they collaborate frequently

It's all about credibility and who's friends with who. I'll use Rick Ross for example. He does songs with people in my top ten, but he's not even close to anyone in it lyrically or as artists in general. You can respect someone enough and do tracks with them but that has no bearing on how the artist is as one. Gucci Mane has even done songs with Wale. =/

Despite what I think, Lil Wayne is the most iconic figure in today's hip-hop mainstream. That's not saying much, but he is.

its funny u use that word, u would think lil waynes cred would b extremely low with his peers, being as though he is such a theif of rhymes and so unoriginal <_<

I've been listening to a lot of early Mobb Deep lately.
I think Chuck D should make the top ten list, as well as Ghostface.

As for anyone to say Lil Wayne is one of the 10 greatest rappers of all time is hip hop blasphemy.
In fact, I don't know who I'd consider more of a joke, lil wayne or eminem.

Everybody borrows rhymes but ER20 was speaking on how pathetic he does it to the point where he has people suing him. That is pathetic. Wayne has proven to be unoriginal. That goes back to me saying he is inconsistent.

i still dont buy the stealing of lyrics, yes while not paying royalties is stealing essentially, it isnt plagerism, which was the original question at hand, which there is no rapper claiming he has done, thats what er20 failed to comprehend,

So you agree unpaid royalties equals stealing but don't for plagiarism and stealing, despite their being synonymous?

I don't feel like creating a new topic with this being the unofficial hip hop thread at the moment so I wanted to ask you guys what your favorite instrumentals/beats are?

I have to categorize beats. Each is so different. Here's some I've been cyphering to lately:

Alicia Keys-Unthinkable
Rick Ross- B.M.F.
J. Cole- Premeditated Murder
Kanye West- Monster
Kid Cudi- The End

I haven't been listening to much hip hop lately, but when I saw you mention instrumentals I first thought of Madlib.
I don't even listen to his music anymore, but he put together some amazing music especially the quasimoto project.
If I talk of instrumentals, I won't speak on songs that were also released as instrumentals but instead the music itself.
Rza would have to get a mention, he has sampled some amazing songs, some good old stax records stuff, etc.
I'd have to say Mobb Deep has some great music as well, and I mention them because I've been revisiting them lately.
Most things DJ Premier has done, is also amazing.

I have to say I also like a lot of 3 6 Mafia, especially the early stuff.

I definitely agree with you on Madlib and Premo. Without Madlib, I honestly may not be as big a fan as I am of DOOM. Premo is a legend for obvious reasons.

Truthfully, I haven't listened to enough Mobb Deep or enough Wu-Tang to comment them but the comparably few tracks I've heard have been great.

"Shook Ones(Part II)" is a classic and I love RZA's work on "Triumph", "Rough Cut", "Method Man", "Gravel Pit" and "Shame On...".

Shook Ones(part II) is a classic, but I like this right now, as I said I've been listening to more of them lately, and as you mentioned it has a Tribe feel, but it's a bit harder, whatever that might matter. For some reason the video seems to skip, and I don't think I can get away with posting some of their other songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbNJcF0H8b4&feature=related

As far the Rza is concerned, he makes some of the best beats/songs, well, at least he did a bit back in the day, but he kept it up, even with his Bobby Digital projects and for a few other members projects.
The Rza, out of all, in my opinion, with the exception of some underground stuff really did find some strange samples and beats to come up with some amazing songs, and the thing about him is that he was prolific with it.
I'd love to be able to post a lot of the stuff he touched, but I know that we can't post a lot of videos on this site.
Maybe I'll find a video to sum it up, but that is unlikely since he has done so much.

Of course, but like I said, I haven't been listening to too much hip hop in a long time, and I assume you are talking about the Rza, but like I said, I'm kinda rusty.
So, having said that I can't recall all the best songs but I can point you in the right direction. The thing with the Rza, is you get consistency with his work.
And that kinda goes with all the members of Wu-Tang, it might be Ghostface it might be Cuban Linx.
But the Rza did so much, at the time he did, it might seem old, yet he set it, it was usually him that set it up, and was ripped off.
Especially at the time, early to mid 90's when it really set off.
Wu-Tang really changed things, it started with the east, and being from Bmore, we should be happy of that.

Good to know. I've never taken the time to really experience Wu-Tang but having listened to a lot of old school artists the last few years, now, the time is right.

Indeed. As complete a hip hop track as you'll find.

That beat was sick.

I can listen to Jay-Z's Allure. Instrumental or not, it's so smooth and calms me. I wrote to it not too long ago.
