Post Season Rule Change

5 posts in this topic

In an article today I found a new rule that will be implemented for the post season only. Here is the link: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/05/nfl-changes-replay-rule-for-playoffs-clock-errors-can-be-fixed/

Essentially, at the end of the half and the end of the game, it is now reviewable whether or not the time has expired.

As official time is kept by the referees on the field how easily can this rule be manipulated to allow a losing team another chance to score?

That depends on which team is making the challenge. If it's the Pats/Colts/Pitt(not in, I know)or any of the other chosen teams, they will ge the extra time. It's a great way to give an extra play to Manning/Brady so the leagues golden boys can win. :lol3:

It will only come into play, as far as I understand it, at the VERY end of the half/game. Say the QB spikes the ball with 2 seconds left, but the clock keeps running until it syas 0. They can challenge and put that extra second back. Or if a field goal is kicked, made but the clock keeps running until it says zero. Or a receiver catches a pass, gets out of bounds at the 1 sdcond mark, but the clock keeps running....etc. It's a good idea, but to add a rule right before the playoffs is very rare.

Yes it only comes into play within the last 2 minutes of the half/game. Which means there is no challenge, it is completely up to the discretion of the officials. There are supposed to be cameras dedicated to the time clock on the scoreboard, however I know that many times the officials will adjust that clock saying that it is not in sync with the "official" time on the field. I think there is just too much potential here for this to be abused and no way to monitor that fact.

Yes I know. It smacks a bit of paranoia. What can I say? I am a Raven fan and these things always seem to be used against us and never for us.

obviously its a booth review thing since its inside of the last 2:00 for the 4th quarter. Thats gonna be awkward. Everyone pours on the field for the end of the game then they announce the play is under review...weird.
