Katula To Play

13 posts in this topic

Ken Murray of The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Matt Katula will play this Sunday.

I for one do not like this decision, Harbaugh the special teams guru should play the guy we just signed Nick Sundberg instead of playing a hurt Matt Katula. This game could come down to field goals. Does Harbaugh see that Matt Katula is not 100%?

Who else on here agrees with me?

This better not come back to bite us.

I agree since I believe both of Cundiffs misses were horrible snaps...

As well as a miss he had a few weeks ago!!

Billy has missed 1 field goal on his own behalf. Katula and his little elbow have missed 3 for Billy. If you can't do your job because of injury.....sit.

EDIT: I dont count Billy's rushed 1 sec attempt at a 56 yd field goal to beat the squeelers.

Fun Facts-

Did you know that Matthew Charles Katula is one of the highest paid long snappers in the NFL today?

Did you know that Matt Katula signed a 5 year deal in 2008?

Did you know that in 2005 Matt Katula recorded 10 special teams tackles, the most by any long snapper in the NFL?

Did you know that at 6'6 Matt Katula is tied in thrid place along with David Hale, Quinn Sypniewski, and Joe Flacco as one of the tallest Ravens?

The tallest Raven is Jarred Gaither at 6'9, followed by Adam Terry at 6'8.

Yeah, this guy is a real problem and we're in the playoffs now. Can't afford to keep experimenting like we did with Hauschka, which we could barely afford.

I think it's pretty damn comical for posters on a message board to criticize a coach on his long snapper's decisions as we know NOTHING about long snapping nor Katula's actual condition, but I agree with the sentiment that things have to improve.

Katula has been good for the past few years for us, and I know this because his name hasn't been brought up ever like it is now, which is the mark of a good snapper.

Obviously the bad snaps over the past few weeks are a problem going forward, but a.) this is a small blip in his career, so the idea of lumping him with Frank Walker is premature and b.) Harbaugh is undoubtedly more astute to Katula's health status than we are, and I'm fairly sure there is a reason for him staying the course with Matt.

I did hear on the radio WNST Matt has tendonitis and that is what is causing his bad snaps, they even reference a snapper on our practice squad, but indicated they believe Harbaugh decision to stick with Matt is best at this point instead of going to the complete unknown and a change now would interup 3 players not just Matt.

I dont understand this at ALL, especially when we have another capable LS on the team. Itd be one thing if it was a DB or offensive skill position player. They'd need to learn plays, schemes, etc, etc. We're talking about a Long snapper. They have the simplest job on the entire team. easier than the punter, easier than the kicker, easier than the frikkin water boy. If it came down to it I think Chester is even a backup long snapper. If theres ANYTHING wrong with katula someone else should be doing it for him.

Actually, we know that he has been dealing with tendinitis in his elbow for quite some time, and it also happens to coincide with his recent string of awful snaps... there's definitely a problem and if one or two of his snaps cost us a shot at advancing, I will not be happy.
