The Quick Slant Play

10 posts in this topic

Does anyone ever see us run them? I swear I see it once a game and we convert it to Clayton or Mason for a first down.

The play usually gives us 4-6 yds.

I see Favre, Brees, and Brady run them itleast once every drive.

I'm not comparing Joe to ANY of those qbs, I'm just saying it seems to be successful when we use it.

Does anyone feel we don't use it enough? or we just don't have the personnel to? Last time I checked we are without have a big, tall, fast receiver (except for the unrightfully benched Demetrius Williams) to beat CB's over the top, so why dont we use stuff to our advantage..? Thoughts?

I like what you're getting at, although most of those questions are an enigma in itself. Id love to see alot more creativity that we have seen from Cam Cameron last year, or atleast utilize our weapons to our ability ie. D-Will..He isnt very consistent and proven, but with the play time he has gotten recently he doesnt have too much of a chance to prove anything other that what he already has, and that would be that he could be a huge factor to our offense......lol

lol. I know man, I dont blame Mason for his performance vs Namndi. I just really dont see what goes through the coaches mind sometimes. I just wonder what Williams did to deserve less PT?

Flacco has a quick release, and it seems he's gettin pressured ALOT lately. I understand we build our offense around the ground game, but I just feel an occasional quick slant would keep CB's on their toes and help Joe a little. The Pats' CB's aren't anything great...I would like to see some sort of Air Attack Sunday.

The Ravens run the quick slant at least once a game but unlike some other teams, the Ravens' receivers aren't very good at getting YACs. Washington is probably the best at it but Cam doesn't use him enough.

Seems like we use it once every other game, but the good QBs are using it against us effectively once or twice every quarter. As many out routes as we run you would think we were setting them up to run at least a couple quick slants per game. Its all about ball placement...throw it low and inside and either its a completion or an incompletion. Its supposed to be a low risk play.
Another thing I hardly ever see us do is a nice naked bootleg. Could be bc our line doesnt execute it very well and I think the last time we did it Flacco got creamed.

I am going to age myself here but the quick slant was the Baltimore Colts bread and butter play.... 2 step drop....Unitas to Mackey, or Berry, or Orr...take your pick.

Williams or Washington from the slot would ideal for the quick slant but like was mentioned above our WRs can't seem to get YAC.

If I am not mistaken I think we have run that play with Ray Rice a few times this year but I could be wrong.

I think Flacco and the naked boot is out because I believe Joe still has a problem with his ankle.

Bench Clayton, use Williams and Washington more combined with the running attack of Rice, McGahee, and McClain and the Ravens should be able to keep pace in a potential shootout.

Clayton's whole deal in college was his YAC ability. I guess his wasn't good enough to translate to the NFL, either that or we just aren't using him right. The fact that you are matched up against an average at best cb (the guy opposite of asomougha) and you can only rack in one catch for 7 or 9 yards? I have defending clayton for awhile seeing his short spurts but this was his final year IMO. Maybe he'll go somewhere else and be better utilized.

That being said I am all for retaing williams and washington next year and I too am disappointed in lack of use of slants in our offense. The slant is the ultimate blitz beater. If flacco perfected it maybe he wouldn't have Woodley and Harrison in his face every other play.

We almost never do, and when we do it's not when we should, if that makes sense. Quick slants are blitz beaters. I can't tell you how many times Joe has missed a wide-open Clayton in the slot when a DB comes on a blitz... Joe has to get better at reading an impending blitz and checking to a run or a slant to avoid getting crushed.

New England blitzed non-stop in the game earlier in the year and it flustered Joe. Hopefully we'll be ready for it this time around.

I sure would like to see more of it. Washington seems like a good man for the job. He's been showin' some good hands. It would definately help Joe when he's getting blitzed, he could use a hot read more than the dump offs he's been using and it's evident that his ankel is hurting his mobility more than he lets on.
