Nfl Strike

19 posts in this topic

I was just thinking that this playoff run could be it for our hall of fame ravens. If there is a strike next year, our team and a couple others would look alot different when they do start play again. I dont see Ray or Ed back two years from now, and im slowly seeing skills diminish from both players. Also, nfl greats Kurt Warner, Brett Favre, Brian Dawkins, Terrell Owens and Derrick Mason will all be gone. So I say win or lose we need to enjoy the rest of the season, because there may not be a next year.

My life for 9 months will die very slowly and painfully if it does, and it might die longer if i know Ray and Eds career was ended not on their own terms.

I think the strike would actually be in 2011 if they dont reach an agreement for 2010.

....and then the world ends in 2012. This is it people, enjoy your Ravens next year!!!!

I heard another interesting factoid. Playoff teams next year can only sign a certain number of free agents. That number cannot be greater than the number of free agents lost.

The NFL will not go on strike. There is way too much profit from the NFL for it to go on strike. Im not saying it would add a crippling blow to our economy but it would hurt...real bad

Take it from an Econ major, it wouldn't hurt the economy. Too many substitutes and dollars would be spent elsewhere. You might see the effects in the microeconomy, local sports bars, vendors, parking garages, stadium labor, etc., but the overall effects would be buffered by alternative sports or alternative football leagues. More attention to October baseball, college football, NHL, and early season NBA and college hoops.

It would be a drop in the bucket compared to the collapse of Lehman Bros./Bear Stearns.

The only the hurt.....will be my heart. It's hard to imagine life without the nfl.

The NFL has been preparing for a lockout since 2006/2007. Sorry to say but if there isn't a new CBA drafted and signed before the 2010 season then there will NOT be football in 2011. It's more than likely that after next season we will have to wait 2 years to see another NFL snap.

Unfortunately you are absolutely dead on. The greed and mudslinging will show it's ugly head during next season. The player reps and the owners will both whine to the media about how greedy the other side is, without making any concessions, nor will they even hint at giving a little. (Remember the other strike?) This crap ticks me off so much. I would give my gonad (just one) for the chance to play and make the kind of money these athletes do, and all they do is whine about how unfairly they are treated. Then the owners pull their shenanigans. Ugh....get ready for an UGLY fight.

There has to be something the fans/media can do to stop this. A boycott next season of all merchandise and stadium goods (food booze etc) maybe? The unfortunate reality, though, is that everyone will complain about the players/owners/CBA mess, but no one will be willing to sacrifice their tickets/stuff to try and send them a message.

Players....you are paid to play...don't ever forget that.

Th only economy owners and union reps understand is what's inside their own pockets. No one cares about the fans supporting their local teams. Do you think Goodell is thinking about the fans when he wants to ship games overseas? Do you think the unions care about fans when they refuse to budge on rookie salary caps so teams feel obligated to throw away millions on unproven, snot-nosed divas-to-be? How about not relaxing black out rules when fans cannot buy overpriced tickets in a down economy?

In most cities, owners probably believe that if fans dumped their tickets, a new group of fans would gladly take them.

I wish I wasn't right =/ One of the reasons why guaranteed money in contracts have sky rocketed is because of the possibility of a lock-out.

Owners actually wouldn't lose money if there wasn't football in 2011. Stadiums can be used for many other sporting events aside from Football, the players are getting paid regardless, the NFL has a "war chest" of billions to support such an event and the owners know that when the NFL does return the first year back is going to be sell out games every week.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I found information that you'd probably (not) like to hear.

The NFL and DirecTV signed a deal a while back which allows DirecTV to air all live NFL games to subscribed DirecTV viewers. This deal pays the NFL 1 billion a year for 3 years starting in 2011 and ending in 2013. If there is a lockout DirectTV is then allowed to air ANY NFL game to DirectTV viewers (old games, obviously- imagine a Superbowl marathon... ='s tons of viewers). The NFL will also pay each team 37 million to keep them afloat during each lockout year.

On top of all that, the NFL has a "war chest" of sorts with billions stored away which would successfully keep the NFL afloat with current salaries for years to come. The way the CBA is designed now it's screwing the NFL and the owners out of quite a bit of money.

In other-words... the NFL and owners WANT a lockout- it'd be more beneficial to them as a business and organization to allow it to happen. It'd force the monetary reconstruction of the game and put more money in the owner's pockets and the NFL's pockets. IE: imagine.... a rookie salary cap, a salary cap on all positions (like the franchise tag salary cap), limit to how many free agents you can sign, limit on draft picks, all income from team merchandise is given to the team, etc, etc, etc, etc.

In my opinion, though I definitely DO NOT want a lockout in 2011, it WILL happen... and in the long run it will actually make for a better NFL.
