Kicking Problem

27 posts in this topic

I wanted to start a post regarding the kicking issues. I totally understand that getting a kicker in the middle of the season doesn't help our situation out any. I feel that so far in the real crucial situations this kicker has come through for us. Billy Cunduff has been excitement in the later half of the season. Missing two kicks in Oakland when the game is on the line for us to go forward, is a big deal. I just hope as we move along that we get all the little tidbits question marks figured out.

I hope the Ravens don't do what the skins did with their kicker - no one is perfect 100% of the time - it was a great game - lots of pressure on everyone- when someone is having an off day - that's when the "team" kicks it up a notch! Which we did! Of course, you gotta love McGahee! and I see blue skies all the way to the Super Bowl!!!!

Come on, it's the long snapping! Didn't we sign a long snapper the week we signed Ivy? Might be time to give him a shot, Matt Katula is letting Cundiff down way too often. In fact, we should give Cundiff and Koch credit; they've recovered from multiple bad snaps, and it makes me feel a little bad for Hauschka (I agree we needed better for this season, but he got a bad rap considering he was a first year starter working with questionable snaps).

If you were watching the game like I was, I saw 2 bad snaps in those 2 misses. The timing is just off in the kicking game. You could even read the H.C.'s lips after the snap saying something about the snap.

The one before halftime was a horrible snap, the other was bad but Koch still did a better job getting it down in time for Cundiff to get it on target he just didnt get enough leg into it.

I don't remember snapping being an issue for some of those crucial kicks he missed, could be wrong though. I think he was just out of rhythm. Sucks, because I liked him as a kicker, he looked like he was going to be solid.

Katula's been playing with an injured elbow, which is obviously affecting his abilities more than he cares to admit, which, as others have said throws all the rhythm off.

Don't throw Billy under the bus please. It's not ALL his fault.

I don't fault Cundiff for those misses. At least one was a bad snap. The 50+ yarder is a hard one anyways. Kickers miss those all the time. If you couple that with a possible bad snap I am not in the least concerned about Billy Cundiff.

I believe those were both bad snaps yesterday, not really Billys fault.

Yeah seriously what's up with Katula recently. I don't remember him snapping a bad one before this year.

Matt Katula is probably use to Matt Stover's kicking style and hasn't adjusted to any other kicker yer.

While I dont know much about long snapping or the ins and outs of it, I dont know how a new kicker would affect how Katula snaps. The only thing that might change is a snap count or length of time from when Katula grabs the ball to when he snaps it. A new body shouldnt affect Katula's snaps itself.

Our long snapper is really struggling right now. I feel that was the problem yesterday.

Wow, what insight! Did you read any of the responses so far? :P

The kicker carousel shouldn't affect him. If it were a new holder, I'd understand, but he's supposed to snap the ball 8 yards or 12 yards or whatever to Sam Koch just like he's always done.

He's been dealing with tendenitis in his leg for a few weeks. That is why they signed another long snapper.

Janikowski or Stover who has been playing longer?

I can't see how that question could be applicable, but I'll humour you.
Stover's been playing longer, I think Janikowski came into the league around 2k. Stover's leg is nothing special.

Last game the problem was not with Cundiff, more of Katula's snappage.

Katula's shoulder/arm is obviously bothering him and I'm surprised at how that issue got past weekly training camp. If you can't function properly on special teams, don't play.

It's was clearly Katula. Those two snaps were in toward Sam Koch's body. Much to Sam's credit he did a great job getting it down for Billy but timing is criticle in place kicking. Katula's injury has affected him and the rest is a "ripple" effect.

All I know is practically all of his makes this year including extra points have been right down the middle. Nothing I've seen from him tells me he would miss a 30 something yarder that bad on his own. His first kick was off the minute it left his foot. As for the 51 yarder I'm not sure about that one. It was straight though.
