Hey All, New To The Board - So Hello

12 posts in this topic

Wanted to say hello.

I was born in Laurel Maryland, raised in Baltimore mostly and Carney part of the time. I currently live around the Fells Point area - schooled here, colleged here and stationed here.

Wanted to see what people think of Joe Flacco? I think he is an OK quarterback, but really don't get his consistency after watching every game this season and going to several of them. Sometimes it seems that he can throw the ball 25+ yards during games and does it quite often. Other times, like tonight, he did his usual "shovel pass" stuff. He doesn't really seem to have the ability to scramble that much (like he did last year) and I have no idea why he just didn't run for the first down tonight and threw it past the line of scrimmage? I don't know if he is a good long term fit for the Ravens, or if it has something to do with Cam Cameron and the calls they are designing before the game, based on their opponents? Thoughts?

Then I wanted to prematurely talk about the draft. I know the Ravens have Gathier, Grubbs, Yanda, and Oher that are all 25 or younger - so I don't know what the opinion is of taking another guard, tackle, or center in this years draft? I was kind of dissapointed in last years draft because of the need for WR, but still think OHER is a phenomenal player (he seems to have gotten the whole penatly thing under control). Last year, I was clammoring for the Ravens to take Mike Wallace with their second of third pick in the draft. This year, I would really like to see them grab a receiver, preferably Danario Alexander (height and speed and strength) or Marty Gilyard out of Cinci. I like Freddie Barnes, but don't know if his height will play a role or his explosivness. One player I am REALLY, and I mean REALLY interested to see if they potentially take, is the Linebacker Sam Maxwell out of Kentucky. I don't know how early he is expected to go, but he has good height and weight, and it appears he can read an offense like Ray-Ray. Any thoughts?

hey man just joined here too. As far as flacco, seeing the attempted scrambles did piss me off too, but I think Its a result of the fact that they covered the hell out of us most plays and him not wanting to settle for a sack or throwaway. I do appreciate his conservative approach this today though. In my opinion, him not forcing things is actually one of the reasons we won the game. If you look at the way they were on him, in some of those plays an attempted throwaway could have resulted in a fumble or int.

Cool, it automatically adds a quote, LOL.

Sometimes I don't get why Flacco does what he does. There are a decent amount of plays where I would like to see him scramble for a few yards, but I understand when he has to throw it away or sometimes slide for a loss of several of yards. With as important as he is to the Ravens organization, it's REALLY good that he watches out for his health. I just don't get the difference between the games. When he has games when he airs it out, he REALLY airs it out; and it is usually (like 99%) usually, with EXTREME accuracy. I just don't get why it changes so much from game to game? Like against the Steelers (I think it was them), he was hitting receivers 30 yards down the field right in front of the receiver. Then this game, he was sort of playing it modestly. Maybe the Raiders have Safeties and Corners that are just REALLY good?

That's one of the many little things you'll learn about the board.

But bottom line, follow common-sense rules, remember that it's a family-friendly site, and always check for topics before you make a duplicate one by accident, and you'll be fine.

Hi everyone. I am also new to the board. I live in York, PA and so am (of course) surrounded by Steeler fans. I wanted to get the opportunity to connect with other fans and talk about our team with other knowledgable fans.

I think as far as Flacco goes... He has done so very well at this level that people forget that he is only a second year QB. A great many "scrambling" type quarterbacks enjoy a measure of immediate success during the first few seasons but generally tend to fade as 1) defenses adjust and 2) they are most often one dimensional. Flacco is a strong pocket passer. Few quarterbacks start their career by leading their team to the playoffs during their first two seasons as a starter.

Flacco had an impressive rookie campaign. The league has had a year of film to study on him and he has still been solid in his sophmore season. Some things will continue to take time to develop (i.e. developing the presence of mind to scramble, moving effectively in the pocket to buy time for an open reciever, and reading defenses more effectively). But in my opinion Joe is ahead of the learning curve. Most QB's spend at least a year on the clipboard- Joe started immediately and has been more than successful. I definitely think that he's only going to get better.

We also have a young offensive line that will improve as they play together. This will also help Joe tremendously. While we have solid TE's and a stable of good RB's, our recieving corp (as a whole) would not fall into the "stellar" catagory. Despite that deficiency, Joe has posted very impressive passing numbers for a second year QB. So I take it with a grain of salt when you see some plays where he goes to the safety valve too early or misses an open target. Growing pains...

As to the draft, I haven't had the opportunity to follow many college games this season and so I have no names to put forward. But I can say that one rarely goes wrong with a lineman in the first round. A complement to Ngata on that D-line would give us a great run stopping combo (aka Siragusa and Adams from the super bowl run) as well as create pressure from the front four (thereby alleviating the burden on our secondary). I also believe that we could use some help and additional depth in the secondary as our CB's are a bit undersized. I would look for the Ravens to address WR in the 3rd or 4th round unless there is a "can't miss" that falls to us early.

Obviously the Ravens philosophy is to pick the best available player regardless of need so it greatly depends upon our position in the draft when it comes to predicting who we will take.

That's my spin on it anyway :)

Howdy Dan. I've really enjoyed walking around in my purple this week so far. Never saw such an unhappy bunch of Steelers fans. :D

Let me tell you it has been awesome. I have a ravens flag that i post in the garden each season. The neighbors have made a habit of stopping by and razzing me. One even offered to replace it with a steelers flag. Nevertheless, I am sporting the purple and black in York and the steeler fans here HATE it.

During Billick's disasterous final year with the ravens I still flew the flag with pride. This year, all of my neighbors have packed in the "terrible towel" stuff on their doors.... Says something about steeler nation now doesn't it?

I know what you mean. Like I said in my profile, I've gotten TONS more grief for being a Ravens fan here than I ever have walking around downtown Pittsburgh wearing purple.

I went to Walmart yesterday....walked past this cluster of Steelers fans who I SWEAR all stopped talking as I walked past them. LOL. I love when the smug gets replaced by sorrow.
