MAESTRO

Troy Vs Ed.

42 posts in this topic

A friend and i were recently discussing something. He had tried to inform me that Troy Polamalu of the Steelers is a better, and THE BEST, safety than Ed Reed. We discussed it in length, and tried as i might he would not make the truthful admission. When in doubt; there is always fact found in stat. I hope that anyone else, especially Steeler fans, pay close attention to what im about to tell you...as i know he will because i have personally directed him to this. Feel free to discuss whatever you'd like from this.

Ed Reed is currently on pace to break the record for Return Yards, Interceptions, and Defensive Touchdowns. Troy Polamalu, fresh from a severe an unrecovered ACL/MCL tear, is not on pace to place in the top 90 of any of these three record categories. Per season stat when both players played at SS: Ed Reed (3 seasons) 77 tackles (64 solo), 7 interceptions, with 2 touchdowns in a total of 219 return yards. Troy Polamalu, in 6 seasons; 72 tackles (54 solo), 2.8 interceptions, with no touchdowns and 35 return yards.

When playing the same position, Ed Reed was better than Polamalu in every single statistical category. He is also far superior on per game basis. So far Troy Polamalu, in his six year career, has 17 interceptions, 210 return yards, an 2 touchdowns. Ed Reed had 9 interceptions, 358 return yards, and 2 touchdowns...in 2004 alone. Reed holds the NFL record for the most return yards in a season. He also has the longest interception return in NFL history. And the second longest.

"I tell Ed Reed to his face, and all the time, 'You're the greatest safety to ever play the game' " - Troy Polamalu

At least ONE person isn't brainwashed by the media who favors the teams with the larger fan bases. Troy is a great safety, maybe even HOF worthy, but he is not on the level of Ed Reed...Not even close. Unfortunately Eds neck injury will probably end his career before he will be able to achieve the records he is in close persuit of. However, he still deserves to be recognized as the greatest safety to ever play the game of football.

Troy's career may never be the same as well from his multiple knee injuries.

It seems like we're getting one of these every week.
The best SS vs the best FS. Why don't we get creative and compare apples to oranges instead?

I think Troy will probably outlast Ed. Reed has said that he's been thinking about retirement for the last couple of years, but I don't believe that Polamalu has made any such plans yet.

It's pretty sad that three of the four best safties of the decade suffer from so many health issues.

Yeah, I dunno Ed is pretty good when he has a pass rush and cornerbacks who do their job. He didnt really do much this year. I ll give it to Troy though as much as it kills me cuz his team cant win games without him and we can without 20.

yeah repeat ftw!
anyway it's hard for me to say because both are phonominal players,I love Reed for obvious reasons but I don't see many players who magnetize to the ball like troy does,i don't mean fly balls to center field lol troy is there on every play it seems,at least when he is healthy

Ed will always be known as a ballhawk and master of film study, Troy will always be known as a tackling/run stopping machine.

So Troy is better because the Ravens have better depth at Safety?

To be honest i think Brian Dawkins is the best safety in the NFL...Sure Reed has records and Polamalu has the rings...IMO Dawkins set the tone for these guys. Im surprised that Dawkins never gets mentioned in Best safety conversations and such. Dawkins has been to 8 pro bowls.

I'd say its the standing monthly topic.

The best part is when its brought up, the OP throws in stats and takes what looks like a decent amount of time like they're the first to do so. Its hilarious that they are probably thinking "man, this a great topic for me to start, I'm going to wow these guys with this one!"

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Brian Dawkins. He's got a motor that doesn't quit; he's a leader and probably the hardest hitter in the NFL. Not quite sure he's got the athletic attributes Troy has or the ball hawking instincts Ed has though.

He said he goes with Troy because the Steelers cant seem to win without him and the Ravens can without Reed. Doesnt that say more about Carter vs. Zbikowski than it does Reed vs. Polamalu?

I think you explained that when you said that Dawkins doesn't have a ring, and he doesn't have records. It would be like trying to say that Philip Rivers is better than Manning or Brady.

I think he was pointing out the impact Troy has on our defense. I never would have thought his absence would mean so much. But it has (even though I don't believe that any one player should have that impact).

I think your defense just isn't that good right now and Pittsburgh fans are trying to put a finger on it, since Troy isn't in, its an easy pick.

I agree, but we were #1 last year with basically the same people. Losing Aaron Smith seems to be overlooked as well. Our defense is still ranked pretty decent, but we can't hold a lead due to our secondary. I think Troy's presence limits what plays the offense calls. To our opponent, he seems to be a huge factor.
