Who Do The Ravens Miss Most?

36 posts in this topic

With the regular season coming to an end, I thought this question was appropriate.

Of all the players/coaches the Ravens lost this year, which player/coach would have made the biggest impact this year?

Rex Ryan: the Raven D played well for him but he was just a coach. No offense.
Matt Stover: We win the Viking game for sure, his influence in the locker room was key but....
Marques Douglass: Great motor
Jim Leonhard: outstanding defensive player
Bart Scott: Paired with Ray Lewis the defense was GREAT. This is my choice for who the Ravens miss the most. He was poised(my opinion) to become the leader of this defense after Ray retired.

What does everyone think?

I gotta say, I think if we keep Scott, Stover, or Ryan, we have an extra win on our record and we're in the playoffs. But I think we should have kept the Suggs money and given Scott what he wanted to stay. As I said at the time, I don't think Scott's the kinda guy to get paid all that money and then lose his hunger, but I felt Suggs might have been. I'm not ready to accuse Suggs of that yet, but he needs to put in a performance in the playoffs. The only thing is, I'm not sure how effective Scott would have been in this defense. He makes so much more sense as a 3-4 guy, so maybe the combined keeping of Scott and Rex would have done the most good. This way we could have looked at another, more ready pass rusher, or just moved Kruger along more quickly. I think he'd have been fine in Rex's D.

I must admit that I was in favour of moving on without Stover in the offseason. In retrospect, that has been shown to be a pretty awful decision.

Out of all the people you listed I would have to say Scott. I mean we have been switching between 3 different ILB's all season due to injuries which with scott that was never a factor he was rarley ever injured. Plus he was in my opioning great at playing the pass and stuffing the run he ran from sideline to sideline and kept great coverage against the TE's we faced. As the season has wore down I can see the defense has improved alot since the start so I would say scott over Ryan.

Scott & Leonard. I haven't been too happy with Landry and Leonard would've helped tremendously on special teams as well.

How about less of "what used to be" and more of what do we need now? Those players are gone. They are not coming back. Lets look to the future.

Practice squadders who think they wrote the manifesto on forum management annoy me.
What a great idea, let's discuss the future, because a discussion with no possible conclusion (because none of us can see through time) is bound to be fruitful. We know what happened in the past, when know where we're at now. So we can put the two together to speculate what would have occured differently had what happened not happened. Or we can do it your way and exclusively throw out wild guesses about how the season will end. Sounds like fun.

I think the Ravens miss Jason Brown the most. Several weeks ago, I would have said Scott, Leonhard or Stover but a lot has changed since then. Ellerbe looks like he could be a solid ILB for years to come, Zibikowski has filled in nicely for Ed and Cundiff has been a solid kicker.

Matt Birk has definitely been one of Ozzie's best acquisitions but Brown seemed to generate more of a push up the middle than Birk has.

Another guy people may not think about is Daniel Wilcox. While he never did anything spectacular, he was a solid player for this team. He played special teams, ould spell Heap from time to time and move the chains and his end-zone dances were always entertaining.

I say Bart out of all of them (I had to lol at Marques Douglass). Bart was a major reason why we would also stop the run.

Who do the Ravens miss most? Nobody, this team was perfectly capable to win the division. Only the lack of discipline has given them the record they have today. How many first downs did the defense give up because of a penalty? How many first downs were taken away from the offense because of some penalty? Lack of discipline has hurt the Ravens more then anyone leaving.

I am going with the guy not on that list, Jason Brown. Just because Matt Birk has been handled a couple of times this year and we are not getting consistant play out of Chester or Yanda at RG. Brown could step in for Birk when he's struggling or start over Chester and Yanda at RG.

I would say we missed Matt Stover the most, simply because we would have clearly won at least one game if he was still here. Goooden and Ellerbe have played pretty well for their first years and honestly paying a ILB in 3-4 isn't really worth it. Scott mostly takes on blockers for David Harris, just like he did for Ray Lewis. That's why Harris leads the Jets in tackles and not Scott. In Mattisons defense there is obviously still some of that, but I don't think it was worth paying him 50 mill.

Jim Leonard was a backup, and Landry may have beaten him out for the Safety spot anyways.

Rex Ryan is great at dialing up exotic blitzes, but sometimes you can actually kill yourself by doing too much. I like the idea behind our new defense. If we have to blitz 7 to get any kind of pressure we leave our back end way exposed. I figure we paid suggs a grip so he needs to step his game up that next notch and start taking over games as a pass rusher. Not that he hasn't before, but he needs to get back to it any get even better.

The crazy thing is people on this board roasted Rex after every late defensive collapse last year and now some of those same folks want him back. Hypocriscy never sleeps.

totally agree with Rex Ryan.

Also with Matt Stover, but not at this moment. Cundif ( is that his name?) is doing just fine. Huchkah, should never have been a Raven.

Beyond that it was all a wash. [/opinion]

Bart, is the one I'd like back. Jimmy had a nice year last year but he hasn't done a whole lot this year. Landry has him beat in EVERY stat and even though he started slow he's done pretty good IMO.

i hate to say this that has to do with the coaching. Harbaugh is not a coach he's a spokesman. Does he even hold a clip board on the sidelines? If he does what part of the game is it for? All I'm saying if your not going to coach any aspect of the game can't you at least get your team to stop committing dumb penalties. So my pick is Rex because he's a real coach.

I miss all the current Ravens who are on IR. The others are gone and hind sight is always 20/20. You can make a good argument for any of them but it's has nothing to do with the here and now. The fact is that's life in the NFL, and like it or not we can't keep everybody. What I would'nt miss is all the penalty flags game after game!

why do you cats keep going over "what-use-to-be" with the Ravens in these threads?

exactly, thank you. lol

WHY IS EVERY1 THINKING OF DEFENSE, LOOK WHERE OUR DEFENSE IS RANKED PEOPLE!!!

first off i must say i used to bash mattison, but in the past couple of weeks he has really improved the scheming. the players are actually becoming comfortable with him... i dont miss any of these guys, why is it always that peyton destroyed us when we had ryan, i think mattison gameplans better than ryan at going up against peyton, thats also because foxworth shutdown reggie wayne the whole game.

leonard i dont know where people are syaing hes a great defensive player, hes a 1 year wonder in my book. all he has is special teams, landry is amazing against the run, yea we all wish he could do better against the pass. but i guarentee he works really hard offseason and camps. and is back to complete form that we know of landry
scott yea we may miss him here and there, but how was he like in his first year, some of u fans are assuming so much so fast so little on our young guys, ellerbe is a rookie free agent who actually looks way better than scott did in his rookie campaign, as for gooden its his rookie season as well since he was injured last year,. wheres the problem, were actually doing very fine and mattison is doing much better job switching guys around
answer this

what was our defense ranked with ryan at his first year
even mike nolan??? any1 any1
definetely not top 10

and here we have all been and still are bashing our coordinator and our defense when our defense is 1st against the pass in the past 9 weeks of football.. are u serious. most of this is because of foxworth really stepping it up, if the players and mattison could have been on the same page from the start of the season like they are now we would be no.1 defense with no problem

btw fair weather fans for all of those who say we suck... can i ask how

we are just 6 plays away from being 13-3 if u really look at it..
think about it and alot of games such as this past week with the steelers i blame the freakin refs on alot of bull**** calls and the stupid costly penalties.

overall this team has playmakers who have talent.

WE SHOULD BE MISSING JASON BROWN, QUADRY ISMAIL, TRENT DILFER..

future - we need some offense, is every1 else like me thinking we will make a move for anquan boldin and in the draft we get arrelious benn. cuz i am praying for itwhy is nobody talking about flaccos performance, yea he has better numbers than last year. but whenever the game is on the line.. in the end he chokes, hes been doing it everytime. ex. colts, steelers.. he starting to look like kyle boller when hes being rushed.. lol

I don't miss anyone on that list but Stover. Not even a little bit. Even then, with Cundiff making kicks I really don't even miss him anymore either. If we had Stover this year instead of Hauschka though, I think we finish 11-5 at worst.

My reasoning being we win the Vikings game and don't feel like being at the 30 isn't close enough in the Colts game so we don't pass, probably win that game too.

Yea lets talk about the future , I think all of us know what the smart moves would have been but we don't make the big bucks . We pay the high prices to sit and watch the stupid mistakes that are being made , but enough about that too cuz after watching all season we all know that it's not gonna change this year . I must say I'm glad Suggs didn't make da probowl cuz he's not worthy . We are still in da Superbowl race , all I can say is that I hope da flags stay in the refs pockets this week atleast against us . I hope Harbaugh gets something through to these guys this week . Oh yea sit Frank Walker on da bench i'm tired of seeing this clown blow the game , he is terrible .
