Officials Calling Our Players "boy"?

77 posts in this topic

The ref needs to be suspended for a lengthy amount of time, too. Assuming this is true. Which it is.

No, they need to be fired. If it is true this indicates that the refs have bias and thats one word that should NEVER be assocaited with a ref.

I think we're being a little too hasty...don't get me wrong though, I don't think it was in any way right for him to call Samari 'boy'.

I definitely think the NFL should look at their referees more, but no matter what the calling won't be perfect, and there will always be that one jerk of a ref. Rodney Harrison should definitely be fined, as well as Bart Scott, as much as I dislike it. Players talk a little smack to each other all the time. Getting mad over someone calling you 'boy' is pretty childish. And I honestly don't think he threw the flag because of the 'boy' comment, I think he threw it because he thought they had the stop and it turned out there was a penalty. I'd be angry too, understandable. However, he should have put that anger into the next play, to make the stop, and remove any doubt that the Ravens deserved to win the game.

I agree both players should be fined but the ref should not excape punishment, if the allagations are true.

Buy why? First off, there's no way this was a racial slur, they were all of the same race, so that argument is simply ridiculous. Okay so he was disrespectful and called him a boy, well what did Samari do to invoke this? He was yelling at the referee for what HE thought was a bad call, and the referee said 'just play the game boy'. Okay yes, disrespectful, and I believe a verbal warning is understandable for this, but if he were to be suspended or fined that's just ridiculous. If a player can't handle someone calling him a boy (keep in mind this isn't even close to vulgarity), then that's simply sad. Samari needs to get it together and understand that no, he isn't a boy, and yes, it was disrespectful, but no, it isn't a big deal. He should have ignored it, and Scott should have too. They can take a lesson from Billick, blow the referee a kiss.

I'm sorry but the majority of calls I have seen have been fair. Just like the holding call towards the end of the game, he held onto him for awhile. And did you notice the offensive pass interference on the last play? I don't remember who it was, but one of our players was holding down a Patriots DB from behind so that he could not jump, but a flag was not thrown, and that could have very well ended in a touchdown.

My problem with the refs in this game was not the calls that were made but the ones that were not. The Pats hold every single play and at least 3 times it was obvious and was not called. One of their players kicked the ball early in the game and it was not called. Randy Moss caused the contact that Samari Rolle got flagged for. Moss was pushing off and should have been the one that drew that flag. Our db's were holding but so were the pats. The were a few times when Thomas came in on Boller and his went for Bollers face mask. One time I believe he actually did touch it, I am not sure of the exact wording of the rule but I thought trying to tackle anywhere around the QB's head was illegal. I know the refs are human and they dont catch everything? They didnt catch all the Ravens fouls or didnt feel the need to call them.

But like I said, I am more then sure that all those fouls were happening the entire game and both teams were committing them. Only the refs choose to began calling all of them in the last minute or so of the game and they all go against one team, that doesnt seem just the least bit fishy to you?

hmmmmmmm how can it not be a penatly when other players around the league have committed the exact same thing...and were flagged for it???????? its down right wrong if you ask me....

I have to agree with that. They did flag Jamal Lewis for spiking the ball on our sideline a few weeks ago. And it was not a delay of game because he wasnt in the field of play. They called it unsportsman like conduct.

Because that is a blatant disregard for respecting anyone in the game, and simply ridiculous. That kind of action deserves an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Harrison did not step onto our sideline, he did not spike the ball, he simply gave a quick wave of his arms to Billick. Believe me, as much as I wanted to punch Rodney in the face after watching it, it doesn't change the fact that it wasn't a huge thing and didn't deserve a flag. I've seen the same and worse on the field between two players.

Its unprofessional and shows that there was a bias there. If he had been calling all the players that, fine. But that does not seem to be the case. It seems that it was calling 1 or 2 players on one team that. And it is disrespectful, forget the racial overtones, these are grown men and they should be treated like grown men. Calling them boy, more then one time, is disrespectful. I agree that they should have ignored but it is unprofessional and should not be tolerated. I do not thin Scott should have lost his call and I do think he should recieve some punishment. And the bias that seems to be present from it calls into question every call that was made by a ref that night.

Rodney Harrison running to our sideline and getting into our coaches face is not blatant disregard for respect. He did not give a quick wave, he said something to Billick about Kyle Boller, Rodney Harrison said it himself. He should have just left the field, with out the pitt stop to the Ravens sideline.

I agree it is disrespectful, but I think it had more to do with the fact that Samari was yelling at him for the call he made, not that the referee is biased against our team. It definitely doesn't call into question every call made by a ref because the calls that were made were correct, and there were pretty much an even amount of penalties missed on either side.

No it does because everytime a call went against the Pats Tom Brady was in the officials face whining. Players get into refs faces every week, I am sure its not the first time someone got into his face and it wont be the last. The fact that he felt the need to respond to this player automatically creates a bias because he is human and its human nature. And it show that Samari made him angry. Can I fault the ref for that? No, but he should not be allowed to officiate any more games because the bias does exist. A ref should never respond to any negative comments a player makes because it compromise their neutrality when they allow their emotions to take over. Thats exactly what happened and he should be fired for it. Its just an inconvient reprecussion that comes with his job.

Maybe it comes with the territory of being a referee, but maybe it doesn't. My opinion is simply that there was no biased in that game. Okay I can understand the NFL telling the referee that he cannot be a part of any more Ravens games, to prevent a biased game in the future, but firing him altogether? Seems a little harsh for a fairly harmless word used at a point in time where the outcome of the game could not be affected. And if anything, there was only one penalty after that, the offensive pass interference committed THREE times in ONE play by Mason...and a flag wasn't thrown.

I understand that but my concern goes far beyond the Ravens game. If it can happen one time, what is there to stop it from happening again. He got so emotional that he called a player "boy" more then one time, thats unexcusable and that shows that he doesnt have the tough skin that it takes to be an NFL ref. But thats just my opinion.

You're right, he shouldn't get emotional and call him a boy, the referees should know better than to say anything. I guess when you think about it it comes with the territory, its a tough job and if you can't handle it, get a different one. However, I don't think any fines or suspensions should go on, at most he should be transferred into a different sport or league, maybe pushed down into college ball. Eh, I guess that's why referees have day jobs.

I know its a stiff penalty but there really is not guareentee that it wont happen again. I agree, though maybe a new league would be best.

i think he should get a fine......that way it will teach him not to ever do it again. and it also Doesnt move him anywhere...just place a hefty fine on him and keep doing it until he finally gets it through is head.

That's simply ridiculous...have you ever called anyone a name in your life? Anything worse than 'boy'? Did you expect to be fined for it? He didn't make any bad calls, I don't see why he should be fined. Move him out of the NFL or away from the Ravens maybe to prevent any possible biased calls happening in the future, but a fine is just ridiculous.

Wow, you guys don't have many middle grounds do ya? <_<

The biggest problem with the Officials engaging in the on-field drama is that they are specifically trained not to.

They are professionals, just as much as the players, coaches and trainers. The important difference in that the Officials represent the NFL as opposed to a franchise.

The issue here is not so much what was exactly said, but rather that: In no shape or form should the Officials ever engage in dialog that is the result of on-field drama. There is no disputing this.

The matter of whether or not the Official should be fined, is a little more subjective. I'm sure there are specific repercussions for this type of misconduct.

I don't think Officials could ever get away with rigging an entire game, much less handicapping and entire teams season. There are many people, with too much invested into these franchises, for it to fly. What can happen though, is an Official getting caught in the heat of the moment or the drama of the game, and allow it to influence a specific call at that very moment. We see people influenced by emotion daily, in ways and at times in which they are required to be more reserved. This is one of the reasons the NFL cannot allow the Officials to engage in the on-field drama.

It is equally unfair to the Officials when they are subject to taunting or patronizing comments. Disrespect is disrespect, no matter what the precursor to it may be.

As professionals, though, they need to be able to keep their composure in check, often times even more so than the players. For the simple reason that they represent the NFL, and ultimately, it is part of their job.

Well put baer, well put for both sides. Both players and referees should keep their calm during a game towards each other, especially the referees. Don't get me wrong from my previous posts, calling him boy is inexcusable, but Scott throwing a flag is not a good answer. Also, like I suggested, if he cannot stay calm during a game as a referee, he should be placed somewhere else, such as the NCAA, and if further problems occur, removed. Fines just seem ridiculous.

The only reason there was no flag thrown on Derrick Mason at the end of the game, was because it was THE END OF THE GAME. It didn't matter! The Patriots won, game over. If he had caught that ball 3 yards deeper in the end zone(that would have been the best ever), you can bet there would have been a few flags thrown.

How often do fans of other teams, and our rivals, tell us we won? This game is much bigger than us, it is a huge example to the world of what the Ravens are capable of.And everyone knows it, and they know we really won.

How about if he had broken the tackle and made it into the endzone, or made a lateral and it ended up there. The fact is plays were evenly called for both sides.

whatever the reason, I did not think that the Pats deserved to win the game. Oh well, youre right, focus on the Colts all d way. I mean we have more unfinished business with them then we had with the colts if you think about it.

Does any one remember Suggs getting tossed for "Malice in his heart" against the Lions? SOME of the refs may hate us, but not all. I know when ever you see Ed Hochuli's crew, it will be a fair game, I may not like the calls but he is consistent.

Refs are human too, but if he was smack talking all game he needs to go.

Yeah, i remember, 2 years ago. Suggs was ejected from the game, escorted out...that game was too obviously biased. But no, the refs are supposed to be people who are calling the plays of the game, not smack talking...they are not payed for that. I mean, they are neeeded strictly for deciding the outcome of the game. Once technology comes to an uprise in football, then refs would sparingly be neeeded.

That Lions game was the worst game i ever saw of the ravens. I really thought we would kick the **** out of them that game. So many bad penalties, wasn't even funny. Bring back the good memories :P

The ironic part of all of this is the same REF that alleged the remarks to Rolle is the same REF that allowed the time-out by Rex Ryan according to the Sun Paper. The remark if true could and should have serious consequences. Here's a headline from a court case referring to the same remark. Its obvious that several of the posters are not aware of the sensitivity of the remark- just type in google and tons of articles will be found.
